Forest Gate Community Garden Uncovered

Myanah Saunders•3 years ago Find a video of our year with People Powered Places fundingUpdate March 4th What have we done so far? Our shelter is well under way. The roof is on, next step the flooring. Our young Woodchips visitors appreciated it during Saturday's rain.Join us for any of the Friday hour long sessions from now until October. Spend an hour learning about gardening and enjoying nature. Our Project: Help us to uncover our full potential.Situated in the heart of Forest Gate, we have gone from strength to strength; but we could do more. We see our garden’s future as a thriving, nature-rich environment that could benefit more people - improving their mental and physical wellbeing and personal connections by providing activities in nature throughout the year.Physical changes will make the site more user friendly, expanding the range of users. We plan to build a bigger covered area for protection from the weather, thereby facilitating more activities throughout the year. New hand painted signage will help visitors find their way around, while additional wheelchair pathways will enable everyone to enjoy all the garden offers. The vulnerable, isolated, those with poor physical or mental health often find it difficult to make use of the garden. We would like to address this. Our new Outreach and Engagement Co-ordinator will actively make connections with different local groups. We will broaden the range of activities to include a Gardening Club, wellbeing focused workshops, and a variety of nature inspired creative activities to help reduce loneliness, improve confidence, and help people feel more connected to nature and one another.Visit Us

Greening for Health

Myanah Saunders•4 years ago We love our GP practice, but from the outside it looks dreadful!Claremont Clinic is a busy GP practice in a prominent position on the Romford Road, close to the top of Katherine Road. Our Patient Participation Group (PPG) consists of number of patient representatives and practice professionals who meet bi-monthly to discuss general practice issues and matters of patient concern. The PPG would like to improve the appearance of the premises by setting up two street planters in the large street space outside the front entrance. These would improve the Romford Road streetscape as well as making the Clinic entrance more attractive and welcoming.Planted for year round interest, the containers would be maintained and watered by patient volunteers, overseen by the PPG. The planters would:·      Improve the street environment of a particularly run-down stretch of a busy main road by introducing greenery·      Make a small contribution to reducing air pollution on one of Newham’s busiest roads·      Enhance the experience of clinic visits of the 13000+ patients on role·      Improve patient involvement in the care of the premises. As a result of this project, the Romford Road and the clinic front space will look more attractive.

Opening Up the Garden

Myanah Saunders•4 years ago Forest Gate Community Garden is a flourishing community resource. We provide a safe place for local residents to relax, meet friends, engage with nature, volunteer and learn.Everyone is welcome, but currently our visitors and volunteers do not accurately reflect the local community. Many ethnic minorities are underrepresented, but in particular those of Bangladeshi heritage.Wanting to ensure everyone has access to the Garden, we took part in a research project with University College London to see how to overcome the barriers to participation. We came up with over 20 actions to widen our range of visitors and volunteers. The top priority is to engage a temporary Bengali speaking Outreach worker, to work over 9 months with families, older and isolated people to encourage them to visit the Garden and participate in activities of their choice. The project will help the development of Forest Gate by promoting the use of a safe green space for a larger number of local residents. Expanding the use of the Garden to groups who have not previously used it will improve their mental and physical health, their well-being and their participation in local community events and activities.

Going Green - Green the high street: Woodgrange Road and Upton Lane- £16,000

Myanah Saunders•5 years ago Our project aims to improve the local street environment through planting.Woodgrange Road and Upton Lane form the main north/south high street in Forest Gate. The northern part has some planters and beds but from the Osborne Road junction to the Whyteville Road junction there is no street greenery at all. Our proposal is to rectify this by installing and maintaining planters including some dwarf trees. The work would be carried out by local volunteers including businesses, residents and schools. The outcomes will be a more attractive environment which will:•           give residents a greater sense of well-being•           enhance residents’ pride in their surroundings•           reduce pollution and street litter•           enable local volunteers to make a positive contribution to the area•           offer opportunities for volunteers to socialise and reduce isolation.

Restart: repair instead of recycling or throwing away

Myanah Saunders•5 years ago We throw away a lot of stuff, electronic goods, kitchen gadgets, clothes, bikes, scooters etc which could be repaired if only we knew how. All over the country there are Restart projects where local volunteers with expertise show local residents how to fix their items. See Hackney Fixers By setting up such a project in Forest Gate we could save local residents money, offer them new skills, use local expertise and prevent items being sent to landfill.
