I've lived in Newham for over 25 years and love living in such a friendly and diverse place. I would love to see our streets become greener, cleaner and safer for everyone.

Keeping the trees would be preferable

Kerena Fussell•2 months ago It would never be my preference for mature trees to be removed. However, using Manbey Grove several times a week, I am aware of the damage being done by the trees earmarked for removal. The idea of building out to allow space around the trees is great- and if it could possibly be extended to the trees being proposed for removal, that would be a better option. The other elements of the scheme look great.

Remove pavement parking

Kerena Fussell•4 years ago Legal (as in the bays are marked to allow it) pavement parking is a huge problem for walking on Shrewsbury Road. There is little space for buggies, wheelchairs etc and it's even difficult to pass on foot at times. The road is wide enough to allow parking on the road - and if the road was filtered and/or made one way, it would solve the issue of so much traffic coming through anyway.

Improve cycle facilities

Kerena Fussell•4 years ago Whilst NONE of the Romford Road is pleasant to cycle down, most of it can be avoided by alternative back street routes. This section is very difficult to avoid without adding substantial distance and it's really unpleasant. There is a random & absolutely useless section of cycle track on the pavement, but as well as being impractical, it's frequently blocked. A decent & safe cycle track connecting to Ilford would encourage more people to use active travel for this short journey, rather than getting in their cars.

Could be improved by a decent crossing

Kerena Fussell•4 years ago The one thing that lets down this series of LTNs is the connection - in particular connecting 3 & 4. Crossing Water Lane can be very unpleasant - in particular at peak commute times. Some kind of crossing between Louise Road and Manbey Grove would make a big difference.

Big reduction in traffic

Kerena Fussell•4 years ago Prior to the LTN there was always traffic cutting through here - down Sprowston Road & out onto Woodgrange Road from the Romford Road. It wasn't great for walking or cycling. Even with all the building work going on, it's been so much quieter and safer.

High volumes of through traffic

Kerena Fussell•4 years ago The level of traffic passing along Capel Road is unpleasant at most times of the day. Despite the proximity to Wanstead Flats, it's often not a nice place to walk, or to cycle - with drivers frequently close passing or tailgating cyclists. There is also frequent fly tipping, which might be discouraged by an LTN.

Balmoral Bridge

Kerena Fussell•4 years ago Balmoral Road/Tylney Road sees ridiculously high numbers of vehicles on a daily basis. Most of these are not residents. The visibility is poor coming over the bridge and drivers frequently go at speed - particularly south to north where there are no restrictions. We need to reduce the number of vehicles coming through here to make this a nicer place to live, walk and cycle

Community Parklets/Information Hubs

Kerena Fussell•5 years ago There are several popular access points to Wanstead Flats used by parents with buggies, people on bikes & less able bodied people, but these are often blocked by cars, making access difficult. We would like to create parklets designed to prevent cars from parking at these locations & allow access for buggies, wheelchairs & bikes (including cargo bikes & trailers). They would also be information hubs & possibly provide bike parking & some nature-based activities for children & perhaps a book exchange.Commercially installed parklets cost a lot of money, but many have been created all over London by communities at much lower costs. We would include planters with wildflowers & grasses to encourage bees and other pollinators.This project would create greener public space, & encourage bees & pollinators for biodiversity. If we can incorporate bike parking and encourage people to visit the Flats by bike rather than by car, this would be beneficial to the local environment by reducing air pollution & encouraging a more active form of travel. This idea came from discussions on our neighbourhood WhatsApp group, which has nearly 100 members, but the project will benefit many more people visiting the Flats which have become so important to Newham residents during the pandemic.
