SMP Swap Shop and Food Hub upkeep - People Powered Places project proposal

Selene SMP•3 years ago UK 'throwaway’ culture:360,000 tonnes of clothing, over 28 million toys, 22million small items of furniture, 9.5 million tonnes of food, 5.3 billion mobile phones , 11,000 bicycles are thrown away each year and end up in landfill. (source NLWA)We can make a difference! We can share, we can swap, we can support our community and reduce waste!Proposal:With this project proposal we want to introduce our permanent Chandos Swap Shop at the Chandos Community Centre, and propose structural improvements to its construction. We propose the installation of a permanent Mini Food Bank for dry and tinned food, a water fountain, and “The Women's Room” for women’s sanitary products. We propose to establish a food hub in order to expand our existing distribution network and act as a link between donors, redistribution hubs, charities (food banks, baby banks) and recipients.Circular Economy Community Support means actively re-distribute and donate perfectly good tangible items and food safe for consumption. It means providing space to receive donations and supplying donations to who and where they are needed the most. The Swap Shop is unbureaucratic, accessible and free, for everyone. Nobody has to prove their eligibility, everyone is welcome to take what they need. But the upkeep of the Swap Shop is labor intense. The construction needs to be improved regularly to be structurally sound to withstand the weather. New shelves have to be built, shelves have to be repainted. It needs to be kept neat, tidy and clean at all times. The construction of the Mini Food Castle is already finalised, and once installed, it will supply dry and tinned food within the BB date. The concept is similar to the Swap Shop, although the Mini Food Castle needs to be attached out of reach of foxes, squirrels and rodents.Low impact food management requires a safe, dry and cool storage space for incoming food. Donations need to be sourced, allocated and quickly redistributed. The Women’s Room will be equipped with women’s sanitary products, basic hygiene products, sexual health products and essential information to support vulnerable women in our community. We need support from Newham Council to keep up with our work. Funding could help to cover maintenance costs, transport and safe storage.(Please see PDF attached for extended proposal)

Colegrave Road Community Garden - People Powered Places Proposal

Selene SMP•3 years ago Community gardeningIn 2019, 10.5 square miles of vacant land have been unused in London. Community gardens provide a wealth of benefits for the physical and mental wellbeing of the communities, connect people from different backgrounds and create a feeling of belonging. Children playfully learn about life sciences. The ecosystems, the fauna and flora, benefit vastly, as well as the positive effects of cooling, avoid flooding, blocking UV rays and generating oxygen through photosynthesis.Proposal:We, SMP on behalf of the Chandos Neighbourhood, propose to to use of the derelict and empty plot of land 148 Colgrave Road to be turned into a community garden. We are planning to install raised beds, planters, compost heaps and wildlife sanctuaries. The garden will be open for the community for seed swaps, planting and growing, natural pest control, gardening courses and a harvest gathering. This proposal reflects the wishes and ambitions of the neighbourhood community. We, the Dunmow, Colegrave and Chandos Road Neighbourhood group, hereby propose to the Council that we be given access to the vacant property at 148 Colgrave road for Meanwhile use as a Community Garden. The land was once a path behind the row of houses on Dunmow Road, west side, and was part of the Chandos Green until the Community Centre/Education was built as part of the Olympic Games accommodation. However, it has been vacant since then, and has been used as dumping ground. It poses a considerable security risk to the residents of the terraced houses on Dunmow Road, west side, as burglars can enter their gardens almost unseen over the wall from the empty plot. The lock on the fence has been broken several times. Using the site as a community garden would stop these incidents and ensure security. But that's not the only benefit of a community garden: improving physical and mental well-being, a sense of community, gardening classes and seed swaps, as well as sowing - planting - growing - harvesting and sharing food.A compost heap takes a considerable amount of food waste and turns it into fertile soil. The produce can be shared on a Harvest Gathering.A community garden benefits children and older people alike. Children learn important knowledge through play and experience first-hand how food grows, and older people come out of their isolation and get to know neighbours. Please see the extended proposal with a detailed description of the benefits and requirements.Than you for consideration,Selene

People Powered Places Project Proposal • Board Game Club for Teenagers

Selene SMP•3 years ago About 1/3 of Londoners is under 20. And 3/4 of them live in the most deprived areas. Newham is the 3rd most deprived local authority in London. Stratford and New Town and Canning Town North wards had the greatest number of reported knife crime incidents. The number of people in Newham involved in county lines criminal exploitation is estimated to be amongst the highest of any local authority in London. Young people and their families are genuinely concerned about safety in public spaces across Newham. London-wide data suggest that victimisation rises in the mid- teens and into early adulthood. Proposal:Bored? Come on Board! - The lockdown during the Covid 19 pandemic has sparked the popularity of board games. We want to follow the trend and invite young people (11 to 18 years old) to join a Board Game Club with advanced table top busters like the co-operative Spirit Island and Pandemic, Semi- cooperative Haunted House on the Hill and Dead of Winter with a deceptive twist, Asymmetric games like Vast the Crystal Cavern or Root, strategy games like Risk or Dune, classic Euro- and deck building games like Catan and Ticket to Ride, role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, Seven Wonders, the 3D game Yggdrasil... and many more! These games involve planning and plotting, competing or cooperating on the tabletop, conquer, besiege, build on the board and build friendships! In a playful manner young people learn to interact and react in a multitude of situations. The ideal venue would be Stratford Library as it is open Monday to Saturday from 12pm to 8pm. In the past the Library already used to run a Board game session, it is easily accessible and has an established system of staff and volunteers to oversee the programme. Please find the extended Proposal attached

Project Proposal for 'We are Community!' Chandos Community Centre

Selene SMP•3 years ago Our Neighbourhood is part of the Maryland ward, one of the three Forest Gate wards. Our primary goals are Community, Sustainability and Support. We, the Chandos neighbourhood, are excited to present an innovative and inclusive proposal for our Community Hub, aimed at providing facilities and resources for our diverse community. We want to host a variety of enriching projects, mutual support and gatherings to create a sense of togetherness and to promote sustainable practice and environmental awareness in everyday life.We propose to: Renew and re-establish the Chandos Centre as a community hub to engage with the rich diversity of our neighbourhood to create a sense of togetherness and encourage educational activities. Initiate, build and strengthen intergenerational, intersocial, interracial and interable connections with neighbours from all walks of life: learning from each other, bonding with each other and supporting each other. Provide workshop and studio space, facilities and resources at the centre. Expand the Circular Economy based approach to promote sustainable practice in the community and support families and individuals. Community Support providing essential resources and services. E.g. set up a Food Hub and a Community Kitchen serving free food. Convert the empty and unused plot 148 Colgrave Road into a Meanwhile Use Site for a Community Garden with high raised plant beds, wildlife sanctuaries and compost heap for the neighbourhood. Please see the pdf with the complete proposal attached.Aims:The primary objective of this proposal is to foster a strong sense of community and to contribute to the holistic togetherness and healthy development of all members of our community. This initiative aims at creating a dedicated community hub that offers a diverse range of activities focussing on social interaction, education, creativity, physical and mental well-being, mutual aid, providing a balanced and holistic approach to environmental sustainability and community support.Values:We embrace that we are a diverse, multicultural and multiethnical community, and we see the divergence with neighbours from all backgrounds, all ages and abilities, as an advantage. We appreciate each other, we care for each other, and we are conscious about how we can create equity and unity amongst us.Needs:We urgently need a bathroom for women, as one toilet in the baby change/ disabled toilet is insufficient. The electricity and boiler system at the Chandos Centre need to be improved to ensure appliances can be handled safely. The catering facilities need to comply with UK food legislation and food safety principles. The centre's office needs to be reinstated, and we need safe and dry storage space for tools, materials and equipment. A reliable internet connection is required for the functionality of the Computer lab. The security of the Centre needs to be improved with night lights and secure locks on the back gate to the carpark. We kindly request your consideration and support for this initiative, which promises to make a lasting positive impact on our community.Thank you.Sincerely,Selene (SMP)
