Safe & Seen by Sign Up Now CIC, is here to support Deaf and hard of hearing people in Newham, promote Deaf awareness and break down communication barriers. The project offers 10 free places on a British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 course, free BSL taster sessions, safety and wellbeing workshops and youth skills training. I recently started attending the coffee mornings and I’m really enjoying it. Aj is so welcoming, patient, and attentive. I really think the safe & seen project will benefit communities in Newham, whilst amplifying the voices of groups often marginalized and forgotten. I can’t wait to develop my BSL skills further in these sessions, and communicate with deaf/hard-hearing customers in my public-facing role. Gaining this skill will give me an edge over my peers, but also enhance my deaf/hard-hearing customers’ experience at my workplace by ensuring they are truly seen & welcome.

This is not just a project—it is a long-term investment in our community’s wellbeing, resilience, and unity. Funding The Sign Up CIC means supporting a future where Deaf and hearing people can live, work, and thrive together on equal terms. It means continuing the vital journey toward accessibility, dignity, and mutual respect for all.
The BSL Level 1 course empowers local people with a skill that has an immediate impact. It enables friends, families, carers, colleagues, and neighbors to communicate directly with Deaf individuals, rather than relying on interpreters or facing frustrating silence. This is especially important for young people and parents, who often express how life-changing it is to be able to use even basic BSL in everyday interactions. By continuing to offer this training, The Sign Up CIC is equipping the community with tools to create a more accessible and compassionate society
Coffee, Signs and butterflies is not just classes—they are opportunities to build bridges, reduce isolation, and foster real belonging.
