Walnut Gardens - Green Links
We want to make changes to the existing road closure on Walnut Gardens, at the junction with Wingfield Road. Our proposals aim to provide more greenery and new trees, and also make the location more accessible for people walking and cycling.

Our design is based on the following key priorities
- Improve the overall look and feel of Walnut Gardens
- Create dedicated space for pedestrians and cyclists
- Include new trees and planting
- Make the space more accessible for wheelchair users, those with buggies and people that are less able to walk
- Make it safer to cross the road
- Upgrade the road surface and improve the pavements
- Increase biodiversity with a variety of planting
- Make sure that emergency services and waste collection vehicles can still use this route
Walnut Gardens modal filter - current
Currently on Walnut Gardens, there is a metal gate that prevents general traffic from going through, which can be opened by emergency services.
We plan to replace the metal gates with removable bollards and redesign the space to make it more pleasant and accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.
Our plans include a new pedestrian and cycle path, and nearly 40 square metres of new planting and four new trees.
There may be an opportunity in the future to improve the existing open space adjacent to this location. This is subject to future approvals and funding.

Designers from Newham Council will be on Walnut Gardens on Thursday 15 February from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Feel free to come to discuss the proposals with us.
Dr Bike - free bike mechanic check
There will also be a Dr Bike on-site where experienced mechanics check everything on your bike and make adjustments, or refer you to a bike shop for more major repairs.
Next steps
The feedback received from this engagement process will inform our final designs for the new modal filter.
Once we have prepared the final designs, we aim to start construction in March/April 2024.
