Construction begins for 147 affordable homes at Canning Town

Appointed contractor Hill Group are nearing the completion of the main building works for the first 147 new genuinely affordable homes at Vincent Street on the Canning Town estate. The homes at Vincent Street will include 46% three, four and five family homes built at Passivhaus standards to create energy efficient homes with lower energy bills, available from 2027.

Vincent Street is the first phase of the wider Canning Town regeneration masterplan, being co-designed with residents to deliver a large amount of family homes along with open spaces, play spaces and energy efficient buildings, all of which will transform the neighbourhood.

We are now seeking residents input for the choice of mural on the front outside wall of the building.

Canning Town Mural Options - Vincent Street Homes

Project Background

The new homes on Vincent Street are nearing completion and we are seeking to have a mural on the outsde wall of the building.

This mural project is being developed by Curtis Donovan in collaboration with London Borough of Newham and the Canning Town Resident Steering Group. This is to ensure the final artwork reflects the local community. The design process has been intentionally participatory, using community feedback to shape both the visual direction and the content of the mural.

Key Themes

Through initial discussions with the Resident Steering Group, three core themes were identified to guide the design development. These themes will be considered essential elements of the final design:

1. Heritage meets the future

2. Art that provides knowledge

3. Showcasing the diversity of the local community

These themes aim to celebrate local history while looking forward, and to create a piece of public art that is both visually engaging and educational, particularly for young people.

Across all design options, the mural surface will include subtle textures and details that embed knowledge and learning. These elements are intended to spark curiosity and provide people with accessible, everyday information woven into the artwork.

Design Concepts

In response to these themes, three initial mural options have been developed. Community feedback will be used to further refine and select the final direction.
