Shape Newham's Future

Over the past few years, we’ve made real progress in Building a Fairer Newham: supporting people through the cost-of-living crisis, improving opportunities for our young people, and investing in our neighbourhoods. But as we prepare next year’s budget, we face some of the toughest financial challenges in a generation.

Like every Council across the country, Newham is grappling with rising demand for essential services, particularly adult social care and temporary accommodation, at a time when our income simply isn’t keeping pace. Unless we act, we face a shortfall of £50 million next year and £90m by 2028/29, with £53m of that £90m linked directly to the soaring cost of temporary accommodation. This year we are only balancing our books because the Government gave us special permission to sell underused assets, but these can only be sold once.

Why get involved?

As part of next year’s budget process, the Council is leaving no stone unturned. We are examining every option put forward by Council officers – finding efficiencies, identifying ways to raise income, and making sure that every pound we spend delivers the greatest benefit for residents. In a spirit of openness and transparency, we are sharing all of the current options with you. Councillors, who have a legal obligation to set a budget which matches income and spending, will decide which of these options are taken up at a final budget setting Council in February.

Some of the decisions ahead will be difficult, but they are necessary to ensure the long-term stability of our borough and to protect the services that matter most to local people. At the same time, we’re driving forward our transformation programme, which will deliver £23 million in efficiency savings, and taking proactive steps to prevent homelessness and help more residents move into permanent homes.

How to get involved

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be asking Newham residents to share their views on priorities and choices ahead. Please have your say at our budget engagement sessions. You can register your interest below or go straight to the council’s published options and give your views.
