Public Space Protection Order - Vehicle Nuisance
What is a Public Space Protection Order?
PSPOs put conditions or restrictions on an area which apply to everyone. They can be enforced by the police, council enforcement officers or any other authorised officers.
We can issue a fine of £100 to anyone who breaches the PSPO. If they do not pay the fine we can take further action with a maximum fine of £1000.
PSPOs help to make public areas safe from anti-social behaviour so they can be enjoyed by everyone.
Newham Council has identified a number of areas in the borough affected by vehicle nuisance and related anti-social behaviour, in the form of vehicle gatherings, street racing, stunts and car meets as well as related noise and anti-social behaviour. This activity is affecting nearby residents often at late hours of the night and early morning.
The affected areas include the Royal Docks, Beckton, Custom House and the Pudding Mill Lane area of Stratford Ward.
The Council is proposing to designate these areas with controls under a Public Space Protection Order to prevent this activity from occurring and where it does, enable Police and authorised Council Officers the powers to tackle it.
Where individuals or groups are found to be visiting these areas with the intention to undertake activity that will cause harassment, alarm of distress by way of vehicle nuisance the police or authorised council officer may issue these individuals with a fine of £100.
The Council is consulting with residents and stakeholders to get feedback on these proposals to inform decision making on whether to introduce the Order. Please see the attached documents to review the proposed PSPO and related evidence of recent recorded complaints. Please provide feedback on the proposals using the survey link attached.
