Plaistow Community Assemblies 2022

Overview

The Community Assemblies will identify how best to address concerns in your area. The assemblies give you and your neighbours direct influence to create a shared vision for the place where you live, work or learn and to help shape its development and growth. This will be your chance to discuss local priorities, establish community projects for your neighbourhood, and influence how the £100,000 available in your neighbourhood will be spent.

Background

Plaistow Community Neighbourhood is made up of 3 wards: Plaistow North, Plaistow South, and Plaistow West & Canning Town East

In the previous cycle, residents put forward and voted for their top three priorities of concern for each neighbourhood. These priorities will be carried forward to the current cycle.

Recycling/Litter and Flytipping (e.g. litter picking, Fly tipping, Recycling facilities)
Community Safety (e.g. Crime reduction, Combat ASB, Safe Spaces, Neighbourhood Watch Schemes)
Parks & Greenspaces (e.g. Park improvements, Pocket Parks, Community Gardens)

How to use this platform:

We will use this space to invite you to actively contribute in many different ways on how funding is spent on community projects to improve your local area and to also inform you about the progress of the projects. The timeline illustrates the different stages of engagement, both past and present. Only the current stage is open for contributions, but you can also review past engagements and see what is coming up in the future.

Christian Prehm4 years ago The large forgotten green in Beaumont Road, on the top of Tunmarsh Lane is very neglected, is infested with pigeons, a hot spot for fly tipping, and a wasted opportunity. Some serious crimes have also happened here. Beaumont Green has however lots of potential, is an ample area with ivy vertical walls and some mature trees which frame it nicely.We propose the following new features: · 3 benches dotted around the path inside the park· a covered seating area· A few of planters built by, and cared for the Tunmarsh students· An urban orchard with mature pear, apple and plum trees, watered by the students and staff as needed.· Replacement of the rusty bins and one more bin near seating areas. (bins position to deter fly tipping moving the inside the part rather than edges)· resurfacing of the path where needed, including removal of the stomp.· Logs and stomps as play features and to encourage wildlife· Replace the metal low rusty railing with low maintenance planting so path is not intimidating with sitting men on the railing. (plan for people, not for cars) 4 reason to improve and revamp Beaumont Green:· It’s in front of a community centre (Tunmarsh Centre), used by many young families.· It’s in front of a PRU, a specialist school for the most traumatized, vulnerable and complex children in our community.· It’s near an important crossing, on the back of Prince Regents St. and Barking Road, one of the busiest junctions in Newham.· It’s an access to the Greenway, used by many cyclists, as well as being on the school run for many children, therefore it would encourage active transport and cycling. The students and staff of the PRU really want to get involved and give something back to the community by improving this garden that has access for everyone. Students are keen to water the trees, work on planters and help with any looking after.The students, families and staff as well as passer-byes would benefit from sheltered/covered benches to wait when is raining, specially just before and after school.The Tunmarsh children need good experiences, and nice green spaces to recover from trauma and help lower anxiety, this would be part of social prescription, creating a nice environment at the start of the day would impact positively on the school day.The families and tots using the Tunmarsh family centre, dog walkers, older population recovering from long covid and anyone else would value this new resource- turning a dump park into a nice oasis that Plaistow deserves.We would stay ambitious for this green, and envision further stages of development and more resources, such as a green gym, play equipment, active sports features and more planting, possibly a meadow.This proposal aligns with all the 3 aims, reduce fly tipping, improve green spaces, and reduce antisocial behaviour. This idea also aims at improving the well-being of the residents, with a particular focus on including the younger most vulnerable population.

Jonas Samson4 years ago We would like to kickstart the process of regenerating First Avenue Urban Wilderness and to be a model for a self-sustaining community in the future.This project will enhance an existing green space in the area and will help nurture its biodiversity. It will provide an indoor and outdoor venue to host different community activities.Aims: Engage people with food growing and sustainability. Promote a healthy lifestyle and wellbeing. Make it accessible for people from different backgrounds including people with disabilities. Create volunteering opportunities to help boost self-esteem, confidence and skills. Establish a social enterprise that will support local businesses especially those who are engaged with sustainable practices. About the area:First Avenue Urban Wilderness is part of a big network of green corridor - a series of green spaces along the Greenway encouraging wildlife and people to co-exist. Unlocking the potential of the site can be a catalyst for the regeneration of other sites along the Greenway.Within the immediate locality are two large scale housing developments; The Grange and Plaistow Hub. This increase of housing developments in the area will make the site an important asset in the community; by serving the outdoor needs of the growing population.

Caroline Sonet4 years ago Following on the idea of the tiny library that were installed last year in Plaistow, the little free pantry would be set in different location, providing some free pantry goods to the local community:'take what you need, leave what you can'People can't always access food banks to leave a food parcel, sometimes they can only afford an extra tin of something. On the other end, people might not be able to be referred onto a food bank. We also know that the food banks are under a lot of pressure and can't cover the needs of the local community. Those little free pantry would provide free food very locally to those in needs.Little Free Pantries are flourishing all over the world, and in our neighbouring boroughs. It would be great to add Newham to that list.

Katie Defoe4 years ago We are ready to take our project to the next stage! These new features and activities are for everyone in the local community:New Features:- A full-size mural on 114 Haig Road East, which has a side facing our orchard, co-funded by the housing association. - Materials for simple structures to harvest rainwater, including pipes, hoses and 2 small water butts.- A larger composter (for both garden waste and residents’ food waste)- Child features, such as a mud kitchen and willow tents.Events:- Funding for arts and crafts workshops for children led by local artists, including pottery and scarecrow construction.- Sports activities, engagement with local schools, and other workshops and events including: bike repair workshops, litter picking events, a herbal and medicinal/healing plant workshop, and harvest festival. All to help celebrate an inclusive diverse community.- Funding towards our bi-weekly “gardening and a cuppa” sessions, including refreshments and seeds, which are run by volunteers and are open to everyone.- Yearly liability insurance for the Wild Green Volunteers and guests, to keep everyone safe.

nick turner4 years ago New City Green has lots of potential, but the play equipment is old and neglected and older children and teenagers haven't got much to do. This is one of the most used parks per square meter in Newham yet very underfunded. The plans for a half court for ball games were scrapped decades ago, and the park is an open air loo with lots of boring grass and useless tiled areas. The image shows the project from the 90's for this park which shows how we were totally robbed of a decent park, with a much slimmer and cheaper version delivered instead. The new community garden is an absolute gem and its bringing new audiences, but the play equipment needs to be sorted out further, as the park is bursting with children and teens, as Newham has 40% of the population under 25.We propose the following features:The feature log by the new city entrance needs to be replaced as it has rotten down, this is a landmark of the park and great for balance play, it brings pride to the area. two sturdy but smallish metal goals in the center of the long 80 meter strip of grass, where the field is flatter, perhaps 35 to 45 meters apart as per FA 5 aside football measurements recommendations. (leaving lots of space on each side for further landscaping, dog walking and picnics.)one basketball hoop on the square tiled area. These three simple features will bring a better use to these areas, in particular the grass area where there there is dog poo left behind, we hope this will improve as the field center is re framed as football pitch used by children also. The tiled area may be more looked after and less glass smashing if it is re-framed as play area. The teenagers will therefore be able to play Basketball and football simultaneously, improving well being and encouraging an active lifestyle. Teenagers tell me they used to hang out by the cages in newham leisure center, but these are now paid, so they come to vape in New City Green, as there is nothing to do. Teenagers need play and good experiences to recover from the pandemic.These project aligns with the three priorities.

Richard Coulton4 years ago This project will reclaim an unused and unsightly local space (between Memorial Church and the Swift Centre on Barking Road) to co-create a Memorial Garden with homeless and vulnerably housed people who form the service-user community at Bridges Homeless Support (Newham).We will use funding to: secure the site and make it as accessible as possible purchase materials to transform an under-utilised space and flat-roof area into a relaxing urban oasis work with a range of local people as volunteers to design and deliver the garden in the way that meets their needs create opportunities for training and broader community involvement work towards a sustainable memorial garden to remember people who pass away, particularly within the homeless community in Newham

Joselyn Pena4 years ago Add planters and murals to the alleys between Plaistow Park Rd/Glasgow Rd, Dundee Rd/Perth Rd and Perth Rd/Cave Rd. Alleyways allow residents to avoid walking along polluted main roads and are regularly used by children for play but fly tipping and antisocial behaviour limits their use. Making them more appealing will discourage antisocial behaviour by promoting community ownership and informal surveillance through active use.
