People Powered Plaistow

Youth-led projects must be delivered with a partner organisation. Partner organisations can apply for funding under VCFS grant, as well as supporting up to two youth-led projects.

Youth-led projects mean that children and young people aged 10 to 22 make critical decisions about the project, especially the project idea, aims and purpose. This can involve designing and managing the project, being part of budgeting decisions, delivering activities and monitoring and evaluation.

All projects must be separate and distinct, with their own application forms, aims and delivery plan.

To accommodate these changes, we have extended the deadline for youth-led applications to the 21 September.

Your project idea must align with local priorities chosen by 225 of your neighbours, which are:

Health & Wellbeing
Community Safety
Youth Empowerment

Mamataj Begum1 year ago The Newham 46th (Phoenix) Cubs and Scouts project is designed to give young people aged 8 to 14 the chance to experience the outdoors, learn practical skills and grow in confidence through subsidised camping trips and outdoor excursions. Many families in Newham face financial and social barriers that limit access to enriching experiences beyond the borough. This project addresses that barrier by removing obstacles to learning, growing and adventure. Trips could include hiking, camping, outdoor cooking or shelter building which will build resilience, problem solving skills and independence. The young people involved will also shape the trips and even lead on parts of it, supported by Scout leaders and volunteers. This will allow young people to take responsibility and practise leadership.Beyond individual growth, the project is also about building community. Parents and carers are encouraged to volunteer and share skills, strengthening connections and creating a sense of shared ownership. We will focus on local venues, and use those spaces for hubs of learning, connection, and pride. With this funding, we will try to make transformative experiences and adventures accessible to all.

Hopefully, you will make new friends and get a craving for more sports activity in the future.

Joseph Huang1 year ago Plaistow Street Gardens- Tunmarsh Lane, is an initiative to improve the local environment. By bringing greenery out of parks and into the streetscape. Change the community's perception of how greenery can benefit public space, beyond parks. The streetscape becomes a valued asset resulting in a more attractive and cared for environment for all. The proposed green space becomes a place for residents to contribute, garden together, promote neighbourliness and prevent anti-social behaviour. The chosen site is now the junction of Tunmarsh Lane and Upperton Road West. The scheme enlarges the planting area and works with existing trees. Its aims are to reinvigorate the site with new planting and improve pedestrian access around the immediate area with an altered paving scheme.

Kate Mansfield1 year ago Curwen is a large Primary School serving a diverse community. Our playground has no green space, and is mainly concrete. We have granted land adjoining our playground; however it has been left for many years and is overgrown and inaccessible. Families tell us they do not use our local parks due to anti-social behaviour and safety concerns. We want our children to lead on the development of this area into a safe, calming green space for children to access both during and outside the school day. Families will grow fruit and vegetables, better understanding seasonality and healthy eating. We have many pupils with SEND, and anxiety and mental health difficulties are rising. We know time in green space is hugely beneficial in keeping children and adults regulated and positive. Our community garden would provide a valuable calm space in a busy school environment for those children that need it, and community members outside the school day. This would be a shared space, and we want everyone to feel invested in its success. Our community will help us to redevelop the space into a safe and productive green area which can be used for many years to come.

Every Friday evening, I run structured boxing sessions where young people can get active, build confidence, and learn new skills in a safe and supportive environment.Growing up in Newham myself, I know how difficult it can be for families to afford gym memberships or club fees. Hattie Ryan1 year ago In England, one in five children face mental health problems, and half of all disorders are established by age 14, making early intervention essential. We therefore launched Time, a drop-in and group-work hub in Newham for 10 to 25-year-olds experiencing low wellbeing, caring responsibilities, poverty, parental mental illness or addiction, and domestic violence. We are applying for £20,000 to fund a part-time Positive Activities Coordinator between the 1st March 2026 until the 28th February 2027. The coordinator will lead on creating and delivering a youth activities plan tailored to participants’ needs. Our vision is for the coordinator to connect young people to the wider community. They will collaborate with Voluntary and Community Sector organisations, map existing provision, and build bridges from our hub into community spaces. The coordinator will run workshops both at Time and at partner venues, ensuring sessions take place in safe, familiar settings. Over the 12-month period, funding will support 3 to 5 sessions each week, including arts and crafts, lyric writing, sports and games. These activities will strengthen social cohesion in the community, encourage creativity, teamwork, and resilience, providing early support to those at risk of social isolation and low mental health and wellbeing. The funding will create a more connected borough where vulnerable young people can thrive.

Khalida Begum1 year ago Hi, I’m Khalida, your guide to the wild, wonderful, and sometimes wacky world of pregnancy and parenting! With over a decade as a midwife, years as an adult nurse, and the ultimate training ground—being a mother of four—I’ve seen it all. From the bustling birth centre of a London hospital to the chaos of my own kitchen, I’m here to share my experience, knowledge, and maybe a few war stories. Whether you’re navigating the joys of labour or learning how to swaddle without losing your mind, I’ve got you covered! Our project delivers comprehensive antenatal and postnatal classes designed to support families through pregnancy, birth, and the early stages of parenthood. While the NHS provides some sessions, these are often limited and unable to cover topics in depth. Private courses do offer more detailed preparation, but they are costly and out of reach for many families. Our initiative bridges this gap by offering affordable, in-depth group classes led by qualified professionals, creating a supportive space for both learning and connection. As a qualified Midwife and Nurse for over 10 years, I will deliver classes covering pregnancy health, birth preparation, maternal recovery, newborn care, breastfeeding, and emotional well-being. Small group sizes allow for personalised guidance, open discussion, and peer-to-peer support, empowering parents with knowledge and confidence.Community BenefitBy making these high-quality classes free to low-income families, the project addresses inequalities in perinatal care and support. Benefits include:Improved maternal and infant health outcomes through early education and preventative guidance.Reduced anxiety and greater confidence in navigating birth and early parenthood.Stronger family bonds, healthier relationships, and positive parenting practices.Peer support networks that reduce isolation and strengthen community cohesion.Reason for FundingWe are seeking funding to deliver free for families who would otherwise be unable to afford them. Support will cover qualified facilitators, venues, educational resources, and subsidised places.By funding this project, you will help remove financial barriers to high-quality antenatal and postnatal education. This investment will improve the health and well-being of parents and children, strengthen families, and build a more resilient and supportive community.

Trevor Tamatave1 year ago Genesis Futsal Project is a pioneering initiative specifically designed for girls aged 13 to 16 who are currently not engaged in sports or futsal. Its core purpose is to create a welcoming, non-intimidating, and supportive environment where young women can discover the joy of physical activity, build lasting self-confidence, and develop healthy lifestyle habits.Recognizing that traditional sports programs can often feel competitive and exclusionary to newcomers, Genesis Futsal is built on a foundation of inclusivity and personal development rather than elite competition. The project removes the common barriers to entry by requiring no prior experience or specific athletic skill. The sessions are structured to be fun, social, and skills-focused, emphasizing teamwork, participation, and personal progress over winning and losing. The core objectives of the project are twofold. Firstly, it aims to improve physical health and well-being by providing a regular, enjoyable form of exercise through the fast-paced and accessible game of futsal. This helps participants build foundational fitness, coordination, and an appreciation for an active life.Secondly, and just as importantly, Genesis Futsal is dedicated to fostering mental and emotional resilience. In a safe and encouraging all-girl space, participants are empowered to take risks, learn new abilities, and overcome challenges. This process directly builds self-esteem, reduces social anxiety, and cultivates a stronger sense of self-worth. Through positive reinforcement and camaraderie, the project equips young girls with the confidence and teamwork skills that are transferable to all areas of their lives, empowering them both on and off the court.Ultimately, the Genesis Futsal Project is more than just a sports program; it is a confidence-building community that empowers young women to believe in themselves, embrace a healthy lifestyle, and form positive connections with their peers.

Marc Garfield1 year ago Gainsborough Primary School is a vibrant, community-focused school in Newham. Our pupils are enthusiastic learners, but many lack access to gardens or safe outdoor spaces beyond the school gates. Families often cannot visit parks regularly, meaning children rely on school for outdoor play and learning. At present, our grounds do not offer the natural environment our pupils need to thrive. With the support of staff, families, and the wider community, we are seeking funding to create a Forest School on our grounds. This will provide a safe, engaging natural space for outdoor learning, exploration, and play. Why this project matters Health & Wellbeing: Forest school promotes fitness, resilience, and mental wellbeing. This is especially vital in Newham, where childhood obesity levels are among the highest in London. Community Safety: A welcoming outdoor space at school encourages safe play, positive behaviour, and teamwork. Inclusivity & Empowerment: Activities such as den building, climbing, and nature-based crafts give equal opportunities for boys and girls to grow in confidence and build social skills. Our ProposalWe will transform part of the school grounds into a Forest School by: Adding natural play and learning features such as logs, climbing structures, and outdoor seating. Creating spaces for imaginative play and collaborative learning. Training staff to deliver high-quality forest school sessions, ensuring sustainability. This project will benefit all Gainsborough pupils during the school day and will also be used for after-school and holiday provision, open to local families.By working together as a school and community, we can create a Forest School that invests in our children’s health, wellbeing, and future—helping build a stronger, healthier Newham.
