Youth-led projects must be delivered with a partner organisation. Partner organisations can apply for funding under VCFS grant, as well as supporting up to two youth-led projects.

Youth-led projects mean that children and young people aged 10 to 22 make critical decisions about the project, especially the project idea, aims and purpose. This can involve designing and managing the project, being part of budgeting decisions, delivering activities and monitoring and evaluation.

All projects must be separate and distinct, with their own application forms, aims and delivery plan.

To accommodate these changes, we have extended the deadline for youth-led applications to the 21 September.

Once you have submitted your application, please add your idea to Newham Co-Create here or clicking on 'Add a project' button on the top right hand side of the page. This is essential for residents to vote for your project in November.

Your application will be reviewed by the Community Neighbourhood Team. They will be in touch if there is any missing information.

Your application will be scored anonymously by Working Group members, as well as undergo a feasibility assessment by Council colleagues to ensure your project is viable.

You will receive an update on whether your project has been shortlisted for The Big Vote in October.

Our project aims to promote health, wellbeing, and community connection through structured football activities in Plaistow Park.We provide a safe, inclusive space where youth can build confidence, discipline and teamwork while staying physically active. Sessions are led by experienced volunteers and mentors who support personal development both on and off the pitch.The project also activates public space by bringing positive energy into Plaistow Park, encouraging safer and more inclusive use of local green areas. We plan to expand our impact by hiring better - maintained pitches and organising local tournaments that showcase youth talent and foster pride across Newham.This initiative responds directly to community feedback and aligns with Newham Council's priorities for youth empowerment, public space activation, and improved wellbeing. Mamataj Begum9 months ago The Newham 46th (Phoenix) Cubs and Scouts project is designed to give young people aged 8 to 14 the chance to experience the outdoors, learn practical skills and grow in confidence through subsidised camping trips and outdoor excursions. Many families in Newham face financial and social barriers that limit access to enriching experiences beyond the borough.This project addresses that barrier by removing obstacles to learning, growing and adventure. Trips could include hiking, camping, outdoor cooking or shelter building which will build resilience, problem solving skills and independence. The young people involved will also shape the trips and even lead on parts of it, supported by Scout leaders and volunteers. This will allow young people to take responsibility and practise leadership.Beyond individual growth, the project is also about building community. Parents and carers are encouraged to volunteer and share skills, strengthening connections and creating a sense of shared ownership. We will focus on local venues, and use those spaces for hubs of learning, connection, and pride.With this funding, we will try to make transformative experiences and adventures accessible to all.

Mohammed Nobab Uddin9 months ago East hands charity is looking to provide Newham residents the opportunity to play Badminton each week at the local Leisure Centre. We are proposing to hold 6 , seven week long sessions over the year, with 2 sessions aimed at women, 2 for the over 50's and 2 for youngsters aged 8-17 years.We will provide a coach and trained volunteer staff, all of whom have had a Safeguarding disclosure check, to teach you the necessary skills , and to have some fun, as well as learning about things like, diet, nutrition, and exercise. It won’t cost you anything to take part, just a commitment to turn up for 2 hours each week for 7 weeks.You don't need to have played before , or physically fit, just a desire to have a go. Hopefully, you will make new friends and get a craving for more sports activity in the future.

Joseph Huang9 months ago Plaistow Street Gardens- Tunmarsh Lane, is an initiative to improve the local environment. By bringing greenery out of parks and into the streetscape. Change the community's perception of how greenery can benefit public space, beyond parks. The streetscape becomes a valued asset resulting in a more attractive and cared for environment for all. The proposed green space becomes a place for residents to contribute, garden together, promote neighbourliness and prevent anti-social behaviour. The chosen site is now the junction of Tunmarsh Lane and Upperton Road West. The scheme enlarges the planting area and works with existing trees. Its aims are to reinvigorate the site with new planting and improve pedestrian access around the immediate area with an altered paving scheme.

Kate Mansfield9 months ago Curwen is a large Primary School serving a diverse community. Our playground has no green space, and is mainly concrete. We have granted land adjoining our playground; however it has been left for many years and is overgrown and inaccessible. Families tell us they do not use our local parks due to anti-social behaviour and safety concerns. We want our children to lead on the development of this area into a safe, calming green space for children to access both during and outside the school day. Families will grow fruit and vegetables, better understanding seasonality and healthy eating. We have many pupils with SEND, and anxiety and mental health difficulties are rising. We know time in green space is hugely beneficial in keeping children and adults regulated and positive. Our community garden would provide a valuable calm space in a busy school environment for those children that need it, and community members outside the school day. This would be a shared space, and we want everyone to feel invested in its success. Our community will help us to redevelop the space into a safe and productive green area which can be used for many years to come.

Many young people in our community face barriers such as financial hardship, digital exclusion, social isolation, and limited access to mental health support. Healthy Mind responds to these challenges by creating safe, inclusive spaces where young people can share experiences, learn coping strategies, and build supportive networks.The project combines face-to-face and digital activities to ensure maximum accessibility. In-person workshops will focus on resilience-building, mindfulness, creative expression, and peer mentoring. Digital tools such as online drop-in sessions, wellbeing apps, and social media engagement will extend the project’s reach and appeal to young people who may not engage with traditional services.Healthy Mind is youth-led, with young ambassadors, peer mentors, and digital champions actively contributing to design and delivery. The club will welcome every individual with all abilities, the project will encourage and promote equality, diversity and inclusiveness. The main purpose of this table tennis club is to help individuals who may be facing isolation among other things like health conditions to create a platform where they can meets with other people in the neighbourhood with the aim of socialising amongst themselves and at the same time being active in a sports that will help to keep fit both physically and mentally.The organiser shares a personal story. " I used to be 120 Kg and diabetic, but by keeping fit playing table tennis twice a week has really helped me to lose the weight and maintain my current weight.

By purchasing a wide range of exciting, diverse, and age-appropriate books, we want to spark curiosity, imagination, and a lifelong love of reading. Shared reading books will benefit pupils across the school, giving them more opportunities to discover stories that reflect their lives and open doors to new worlds. New Play Equipment Play is vital for children’s development, helping them build confidence, social skills, and friendships across year groups. This project will fund new equipment such as giant Connect 4, a games wall, soft balls, skipping ropes, and parachutes. The club will run weekly during term-time between March 2026 and February 2027 and will be open to all local children, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN).Through baking, children will learn practical skills such as measuring, following instructions, and kitchen safety, while also developing confidence, teamwork, and creativity. Each session will give children the chance to make something they can proudly take home and share with their families.The project will: Provide an inclusive, safe, and supportive space for over 100 children across Newham. Offer adapted equipment and one-to-one support so that SEN children can fully participate. Involve parents, volunteers, and young people as peer mentors, strengthening community connections. End with a family celebration and recipe booklet, showcasing what the children have achieved. Hattie Ryan9 months ago In England, one in five children face mental health problems, and half of all disorders are established by age 14, making early intervention essential. We therefore launched Time, a drop-in and group-work hub in Newham for 10 to 25-year-olds experiencing low wellbeing, caring responsibilities, poverty, parental mental illness or addiction, and domestic violence. We are applying for £20,000 to fund a part-time Positive Activities Coordinator between the 1st March 2026 until the 28th February 2027. The coordinator will lead on creating and delivering a youth activities plan tailored to participants’ needs. Our vision is for the coordinator to connect young people to the wider community. They will collaborate with Voluntary and Community Sector organisations, map existing provision, and build bridges from our hub into community spaces. The coordinator will run workshops both at Time and at partner venues, ensuring sessions take place in safe, familiar settings. Over the 12-month period, funding will support 3 to 5 sessions each week, including arts and crafts, lyric writing, sports and games. These activities will strengthen social cohesion in the community, encourage creativity, teamwork, and resilience, providing early support to those at risk of social isolation and low mental health and wellbeing. The funding will create a more connected borough where vulnerable young people can thrive.

Mikayl Mehtab9 months ago Men In Sheds in Newham were awarded the Well Newham Award at the 2024 Newham Civic Awards for their significant contributions to combating loneliness and isolation among men in the borough by providing community spaces to connect, converse, and create.Men in Shed - Breaking Grounds is a registered charity in Plaistow offering safe, therapeutic spaces for men aged 18+ to connect, share skills, and recover from loneliness and poor mental health.We run a Workshop Shed for bike repairs and woodwork, a Social Shed for conversation and companionship, and a two-year programme of coach trips for residents, service users, and members. These outings build brotherhood, reduce isolation, and promote recovery.The Shed also donates refurbished bikes and wheelchair to residents and charities, promotes cycling, and strengthens sustainable lifestyles. Our pupils are enthusiastic learners, but many lack access to gardens or safe outdoor spaces beyond the school gates. Families often cannot visit parks regularly, meaning children rely on school for outdoor play and learning. At present, our grounds do not offer the natural environment our pupils need to thrive.With the support of staff, families, and the wider community, we are seeking funding to create a Forest School on our grounds. This will provide a safe, engaging natural space for outdoor learning, exploration, and play.Why this project matters Health & Wellbeing: Forest school promotes fitness, resilience, and mental wellbeing. This is especially vital in Newham, where childhood obesity levels are among the highest in London. Community Safety: A welcoming outdoor space at school encourages safe play, positive behaviour, and teamwork. This project will benefit all Gainsborough pupils during the school day and will also be used for after-school and holiday provision, open to local families.By working together as a school and community, we can create a Forest School that invests in our children’s health, wellbeing, and future—helping build a stronger, healthier Newham.
