Update for Youth-led applications

Youth-led projects must be delivered with a partner organisation. Partner organisations can apply for funding under VCFS grant, as well as supporting up to two youth-led projects.

Youth-led projects mean that children and young people aged 10 to 22 make critical decisions about the project, especially the project idea, aims and purpose. This can involve designing and managing the project, being part of budgeting decisions, delivering activities and monitoring and evaluation.

All projects must be separate and distinct, with their own application forms, aims and delivery plan.

To accommodate these changes, we have extended the deadline for youth-led applications to the 21 September.

Once you have submitted your application, please add your idea to Newham Co-Create here or clicking on 'Add a project' button on the top right hand side of the page. This is essential for residents to vote for your project in November.

Your application will be reviewed by the Community Neighbourhood Team. They will be in touch if there is any missing information.

Your application will be scored anonymously by Working Group members, as well as undergo a feasibility assessment by Council colleagues to ensure your project is viable.

You will receive an update on whether your project has been shortlisted for The Big Vote in October.

This is our next step in bringing people together to improve community wellbeing, empowering local voices, and create positive, lasting change.We have a proven track record of delivering successful community focused initiatives. Projects such as Warm Heaven have offered safe, welcoming spaces for people to find warmth, companionship, and support during difficult times, while our Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme has provided vital resources, healthy meals, and engaging activities for families during school holidays. Whereas, we have also previously delivered PPP Project successfully with the tremendous feed backBuilding on these successes, our project will focus on harnessing the skills, ideas, and energy of local people to strengthen wellbeing, reduce isolation, and create inclusive opportunities, specially the adults living with strokes and diabetes. Syed Haque8 months ago Healthy Minds, Body and Spirit Fair and Share has been established since 1996 and have been supporting the local community with advice and guidance for the elderly and vulnerable community in Newham.Fair and Share aims to provide services in the interests of social welfare, health and well-being to enhance and encourage healthier lifestyle of women of asian decent living in London Borough of Newham and who have a need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances with the objects of improving their conditions of life. Our project proposal will look to address the health inequalities and help to build a stronger community. This will be achieved through a nutrition advice/cooking classes, intergenerational activities, fitness sessions, Tai Chi and Mindfulness. This project will be a wraparound service to support health and wellbeing and fulfil the community participation agenda.

Javid Patel7 months ago This project delivers a weekly three-hour Saturday club for fifty financially and socially disadvantaged young people (aged 12–16) in Newham. It offers a holistic programme supporting wellbeing, aspiration, and attainment, addressing the whole child—mind, body, and future opportunities. The programme concludes with volunteering, helping participants shift from recipients of support to confident agents of change.Hosted at Elmhurst Primary School and local community centres since 2021, the club provides a safe, secure, and Ofsted-compliant environment for learning and growth. Priority is given to children receiving benefits-related free school meals, with focus on those most vulnerable—young carers, children affected by domestic abuse, those with social workers, or at risk of homelessness.Weekly sessions combine sports, creative arts, enrichment, and academic support. Each participant receives a free nutritious hot meal, tackling food insecurity and supporting concentration, energy, and overall wellbeing. Activities include cycling, ice skating, water sports, and skateboarding, alongside STEM, coding, and creative writing workshops delivered with partners such as Ben Kinsella Trust, YGAM, and the Children’s Society.Academic tutoring helps prevent learning gaps, while mentoring reinforces positive behaviours and raises aspirations. The final term focuses on community volunteering, enabling young people to apply new skills and develop pride, resilience, and leadership.Through these integrated approaches, the project improves educational engagement, fosters social and emotional wellbeing, reduces food insecurity, and strengthens communities, ensuring young people in Newham have equitable opportunities to thrive.

MICHELLE WATSON7 months ago The Newham Thrive Triad is a wholistic youth and community initiative designed to tackle three urgent challenges facing our borough: Health & Wellbeing (The Mind), Community safety (The Movement), and Community Development & Participation (The Muse). Rooted in prevention and empowerment, the project provides young people and families with the tools, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.Through workshops, mentoring, sports, creative activities, and community events, we will engage young people aged 16–30 (there are elements that will impact younger teens as well) and their families, equipping them with practical life skills, healthier habits, and pathways into training, volunteering, and employment. Alongside this, targeted knife crime awareness campaigns, surrender events, and partnerships with local police will address community safety head-on. Food banks, community meals, and nutrition workshops will support those in hardship, reducing isolation and fostering belonging.Our vision is not only to respond to immediate needs but to break cycles of poverty, violence, and disadvantage. By combining measurable outcomes with powerful personal stories, the Thrive Triad will strengthen resilience, reduce risks, and build a safer, healthier, and more connected Newham, where every resident has the chance to flourish and thrive.

This year, the children at Shaftesbury Primary School have taken part in a fantastic compost scheme where they collected food waste and deposited it at a compost bin located in Katherine Road Community Centre. We would like to take inspiration from this and alongside a local artist, create a mural to represent this which will transform the look of this side of Katherine Road completely.

Asim Uddin7 months ago Our project aims to empower young adults aged 16–25 in Green Street by providing hands-on workshops in artificial intelligence and technology. Over a six-month period, participants will learn practical skills, work on real-world AI projects, and gain experience that enhances their employability and confidence. Through interactive sessions, mentorship, and peer collaboration, participants will develop problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership skills. The programme will directly involve around 50 young people and indirectly benefit their families and the wider community by sharing knowledge and fostering positive engagement. By providing accessible learning opportunities, the project supports Green Street’s local priority of youth empowerment. It encourages personal growth, social confidence, and constructive participation in community life. All activities will be completed within the project timeframe, with clear evaluation to measure knowledge gain, skill development, and increased confidence. This initiative offers local young adults the tools to succeed in the modern economy while strengthening community connections, making Green Street a more inclusive, skilled, and thriving place to live.

What started as a small bike repair shop and cycling club has grown into a hub for fitness, wellbeing, and sustainable travel. Over the last four years, we’ve supported thousands of Newham residents through affordable bike servicing, guided rides, spin classes, and community events.We are now bringing our work to Green Street to make fitness and cycling more accessible for residents who may face barriers such as cost, travel, or confidence. By delivering activities directly in the heart of the neighbourhood, we aim to reduce those barriers and create inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcome.The programme includes: Spin Classes – mobile 10-bike sessions, beginner-friendly and supportive, run regularly at Green Street Community Hall. Group Cycling Rides & Clubs – encouraging active travel, confidence, and outdoor fitness. Workshops – “how to cycle” sessions and basic bike repair, led by our in-house mechanics. It tackles a daily reality on Green Street, pollution and asthma, through practical, visible steps that families can implement immediately.As the next generation, we want clean air and an environment in which we walk, play, study, and live. We will install more than 200 air-purifying plants! In schools, accompanied by teacher demonstrations, we will train other young people as Plant Champions to keep care simple. At home, over 50 families will receive easy kits with guidance and small tools that reduce common triggers and help build lasting routines.Support continues in the community with local health partners; we will deliver four welcoming workshops focused on managing asthma and reducing exposure. Outside, 10–12 Clean Air Walks will use portable monitors to map hotspots, encourage no-idling at school gates, and promote safer, lower-pollution routes.The change is immediate and measurable: greener classrooms, calmer chests, fewer absences, and parents who feel confident. Scouts lead the work; teachers and pupils help; neighbours participate; benefits last beyond the grant. This project is aimed to encourage residents to explore their skill and to boost your imagination through baking. This project will be run once a week at the Katharine Road community center, It is completely free and everyone is welcome to join us. All tools and products will be provided. All you have to bring is a container to enjoy your bakes and to take it away to enjoy with your family and friends.Please come along and start baking for your wellbeing.

mohammad ashwaad uddin8 months ago The Legends Youth Thai Boxing Project will offer free martial arts and fitness classes for children and young people aged 4–18 at Katherine Road Community Centre. Since 2011, Legends Martial Arts has been delivering high-quality sessions that build confidence, discipline, and resilience, while keeping young people active and safe.Our project will provide free weekly classes currently where no martial arts clubs currently exist.The project is designed to remove barriers so that all families—especially those on low incomes—can access positive, structured activities at no cost. Over 100 young people already take part each week at various sites including Monega Primary School and Plashet Road, with many reporting improved fitness, reduced stress, and greater self-confidence. Parents and schools tell us they see clear benefits in behaviour, wellbeing, and focus.By offering safe spaces, positive role models, and opportunities for personal growth, the Legends Youth Thai Boxing Project will help create a healthier, safer, and more connected neighbourhood. We are committed to empowering the next generation to thrive—both inside and outside the dojo.

With the funding, we aim to deliver the following: (a) Helping to engage local people from the grassroots to raise awareness of the benefits of volunteering and community actions through volunteering training; volunteering placements in our organisation's activity programmes; Training; guidance and knowledge on local community issues. Dominic Johnson7 months ago Development of Shared Outdoor Space for Community Use on Green Street, at St Edward’s SchoolThe proposal is for lighting for a multi-use sports pitch behind St. Edward's School. We would like to make it available to the wider community for sports and other events. We would like local organisations such as holiday schools and youth sports groups in the evenings, weekends and holidays. We would also like to make the space available for local community groups who need a large outdoor area.The space is currently very dark in the evening with the BT buildings, private gardens, tall trees and flats on three sides. The School's sports equipment shed was broken into repeatedly, and someone lit a fire on another occasion. partly because it is so dark. It is about 30 m from Green Street, so there no artificial lighting. By lighting this area later in the evenings it would make it a safer, more secure area for local residents. And reduce the likelihood of the are being an area for criminal activity. As a prominent fixture on Green Street, we are keen to develop engagement with local groups beyond the school community and Our Lady of Compassion Church. Our school community is Catholic, but we have and large number of families from other faiths, and we would like to reflect that by making the facilities available to local resident groups and further develop inter-community relations. We are aware that the sports pitches are mostly empty after the school day, in holidays and particularly in the evenings. The space would provide access to artificial turf, toilets, water and lighting for evening events and activities. Although surrounded by flats and private gardens, the space is some distance from residential dwellings and sheltered by tall trees on one side.=We are particularly keen to open the facilities to youth sports groups and have been approached previously, but this did not proceed because of poor evening lighting. We feel that the more sports facilities that are available locally, the greater likelihood of local engagement with young people who live nearby. We have made the facilities available to the West Ham Foundation in the for a summer school for Pupil Premium children in a number of other faith and non-faith schools, but we would like to extend this into the Autumn and Winter and be available to other groups.Our school budget limits prevent us from funding this in the foreseeable future. This grant would allow us to conduct the work so that the facility is well lit and secure to the benefit of local residents, community groups and particularly, the health and well-being young people. Any fees charged would be used to cover basic costs such the caretaker and cleaning

This women-only, free, trauma-informed project brings friendly, practical antenatal and postnatal sessions close to home. Across 25 sessions, we’ll cover birth preparation and choices, feeding (including safe formula use), safe sleep, postnatal recovery and pelvic health, understanding baby cues, and maternal mental wellbeing, plus how to navigate appointments with confidence. Babies are welcome. A helper can hold/settle little ones so you can focus, and we offer interpretation support where needed. We’ll also host two 'delivery doulas' drop-ins so women without local family can nominate a trusted ‘birth buddy.’Who is it for? Pregnant women and new mums, especially those with no recourse to public funds or limited family support, who want a calm space to learn, ask questions and build a small circle of peers.Why it matters: Less isolation, safer infant care, earlier help when it’s needed, and stronger neighbour networks. Each week in the Green Street Neighbourhood, we run multi-sport sessions (including cricket, futsal, boxing, multi-skills, and yoga/strength), a girls-only club led by a female coach, and a monthly development workshop. It’s delivered by professional, qualified coaches who work with youth, and two youth development facilitators, keeping sessions structured, welcoming, and safe. University pre-entry ambassadors participate in workshops to guide young people and open up routes into higher education, as well as pathways into apprenticeships, volunteering, training, work experience, and college, thereby reducing the risk of young people becoming NEET.Families asked for a local, culturally aware alternative to constant device time and the ‘dead hours’ after school. We already deliver in Newham and are ready to scale. Emma Bellerby7 months ago Moving Stories is a creative learning project that will bring dance and storytelling into Green Street schools. Led by world renowned dance company, Akram Khan Company, the programme brings professional dancers into schools to work with students and teachers. It helps children to use movement to explore ideas, share their own stories, and build confidence in learning.Watch this short film to learn more about Moving StoriesThe project will run for one year across three local primary schools. Two classes in each school will work closely with our artists in weekly workshops, while all pupils will experience assemblies and taster sessions. Parents and carers will also be invited to join in through special workshops and school events, creating intergenerational opportunities to celebrate creativity together.By working alongside teachers, we will also leave a lasting legacy. Staff will be supported to use movement as a teaching tool across the curriculum, so that children continue to benefit long after the project ends.In total, Moving Stories will reach around 1,200 people in Green Street – children, teachers, and families – improving wellbeing, encouraging self-expression, and building stronger connections between schools and the wider community.Help us bring this exciting project to Green Street!

Dilawar Hussain8 months ago Henry VIII Social Social Club is formed of local residents who have previously delivered projects around Arts, heritage and culture. This new project aims to create a series of plaques across a number of key sites of historical significance along the borders of the Boleyn and Green Street East Wards.These plaques will commemorate eight to ten sites within the neighbourhood, with a brief description of the site engraved onto the plaque. The trail will also include a digital tool using QR codes, linking each plaque to a short video description of each site.Examples of sites to be included in this trail include the old West Ham United football ground, Queens Market, Newham bookshop on Barking Road as well as other sites including places of worship. These sites all contributed significantly towards the rich culture and diversity of the ever changing Green Street Neighbourhood. The project will be complimented by walking tours of the trail which will be ongoing beyond the scope of this project.

Too often, young people say there are not enough secure, positive spaces after school. We want to change this by designing and running a programme that is free, local, and welcoming to all.Between March 2026 and February 2027, we will deliver regular Skills Labs and drop-in peer circles where young people can build confidence, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership. Sessions will be calm, supervised, and SEND-friendly, creating a safe environment where everyone can take part.A key feature will be three ‘community challenge’ projects co-designed by young people. These could be creative improvements to shared spaces, youth-led safety walks, or starter fitness sessions, all showing the wider community what young people can achieve.We expect 30–40 young people to take part directly and over 200 residents to benefit overall, through volunteering, neighbourhood improvements, and family showcases. Bridge the Gap will provide young people with routine, purpose, and a sense of belonging, while building pride, trust, and stronger connections in Green Street.

Roots and Routes Trailblazers is a new youth-led project designed by local students for 14–19 year olds who want more than just screens and side streets.We’re putting energy back into our neighbourhood with fortnightly outdoor sessions that are fun, practical, and confidence-boosting. Think navigation challenges, nature walks, photography trails, and mini-makeovers to local parks and streets. Add two exciting away days and a one-night residential, and suddenly young people who never thought they’d camp, cook outdoors, or lead a team will be doing exactly that; together, and safely.This isn’t just about adventure, it’s about pride. Parents gain peace of mind knowing sessions are supervised and purposeful. Neighbours see cleaner, friendlier spaces. And young people build skills, independence, and stronger connections to Green Street.Roots and Routes Trailblazers is our chance to show that adventure, confidence, and community can all start right here. Teens, parents, carers, and older neighbours make side by side, talk, and feel part of something local. The purpose is simple. Make together. Talk together. Feel better.Over one year we will run 20 sessions. We will paint on canvas and paper, craft paper flowers, make simple fabric pieces, collage, card making, upcycling, and cultural craft swaps where neighbours teach a technique from home. Each session includes a quick welcome, a short demo, unhurried making time, and a sharing circle.After our flower making workshop, we will take an away day to the Saatchi Gallery to enjoy a flowers exhibition together, with guided looking, sketching, and a reflection! (with travel)Why this matters. Green Street is diverse yet ages rarely meet. This project creates a safe space that reduces isolation, builds confidence, and lifts pride in place. They reach our phones, inboxes, and front doors, leaving people anxious, isolated, and sometimes with serious financial loss. Many residents tell us they feel embarrassed to ask for help or unsure who to trust.Beat the Scammer is a fun, practical project that makes safety simple and local. Each month we will host a scam-awareness pop-up at a trusted community venue. Residents can take part in a short “escape-game” challenge to learn how to spot fake texts, calls, and emails, then get one-to-one help at a friendly support desk. Women-only slots and multilingual support in Urdu, Bengali, and English will ensure everyone can take part.People will leave with a simple one-page 'Shield Sheet' of steps and contacts to share at home. Over the year, hundreds of residents will gain skills, confidence, and peace of mind, helping Green Street become a safer, stronger, and more connected place to live.

Layla Adda7 months ago Girls tell us the same thing: there aren’t enough safe spaces for girls' sports clubs or welcoming places to be active. Girls' Basketball creates a girls-only space led by local expert coaches, where 10-13-year-old girls can engage in basketball and be trained to attend away days, tournaments and have a residential trip to help develop the skills and training in small, friendly groups.No trials, no pressure, and we will move at their pace. Sessions are culturally sensitive (female staff, modest kit options, privacy), and close to home. We’ll mix fun drills with mini confidence boosters, goal setting, teamwork, and self-care, so girls leave feeling stronger in mind and body.Parents and carers are welcome to pop in. Young girls who enjoy it can train as assistant coaches, allowing the programme to grow from within. We’ll work with local schools and community venues to ensure timings are suitable for homework and faith commitments.More girls are taking part in regular activity, new friendships, and a stronger sense of belonging. This will be a warm space that listens. Girls' Basketball is about joy, movement, and giving girls the room they’ve been asking for.

Volunteers run a quiet table for forms and gentle follow ups, interpreters are arranged when needed, and sometimes a link worker or community nurse joins for a short question and answer.If you are new to the UK, caring for family, working shifts, living with diabetes or high blood pressure, or prefer to speak in your first language, you are welcome. It is free to join, no referral, no papers, bring a friend, bring your baby, or come on your own. The space is private, kind, and culturally sensitive.Across the year we will run 24 sessions, close to home and easy to reach.
