Voluntary Community and Faith Sector organisations can apply for up to £20,000
Youth-led projects can apply for up to £10,000

Update for Youth-led applications

Youth-led projects must be delivered with a partner organisation. Partner organisations can apply for funding under VCFS grant, as well as supporting up to two youth-led projects.

Youth-led projects mean that children and young people aged 10 to 22 make critical decisions about the project, especially the project idea, aims and purpose. This can involve designing and managing the project, being part of budgeting decisions, delivering activities and monitoring and evaluation.

All projects must be separate and distinct, with their own application forms, aims and delivery plan.

To accommodate these changes, we have extended the deadline for youth-led applications to the 21 September.

Once you have submitted your application, please add your idea to Newham Co-Create here or clicking on 'Add a project' button on the top right hand side of the page. This is essential for residents to vote for your project in November.

Your application will be reviewed by the Community Neighbourhood Team. They will be in touch if there is any missing information.

Your application will be scored anonymously by Working Group members, as well as undergo a feasibility assessment by Council colleagues to ensure your project is viable.

You will receive an update on whether your project has been shortlisted for The Big Vote in October.

These experiences are designed to enrich our school curriculum, encourage physical activity and support emotional resilience, particularly for families who face financial or social barriers to accessing such opportunities.Children will take part in engaging, hands-on learning outside the classroom—visiting museums, nature reserves and cultural venues. These educational visits boost confidence, curiosity, cultural capital and social skills while offering a break from the pressures of daily life. Being active and spending time in nature has proven benefits for reducing stress and supporting mental wellbeing.Families will be invited to attend together, helping to strengthen relationships and create positive shared memories. These experiences promote connection and communication, which are vital for long-term emotional health.The project also supports community development by increasing use of local resources, encouraging social inclusion, and reducing isolation. Catherine Shanks7 months ago We've had the pleasure of running some free Skateboarding lessons throughout August 2025 in Brampton Park, thanks to a Skate Newham funded project. As a result of these sessions, we have a huge and growing demand for more regular lessons. So everyone in the community can continue to grow and develop their skateboarding and life skills, in a safe and supported environment, for free.With People Powered Places funding, we would be able to fund free weekly skateboarding lessons, for the whole year. We would also run some half-term clubs and other one-off events for the community.The funding would also allow us to secure an indoor location during the wet and winter months, and some skateboarding obstacles to furnish it. This would ensure we can continue to run the clubs regularly, whatever the weather.Skateboarding can be hard to access, scary to start, expensive to get lessons and equipment, and extremely seasonal (you can't do it in the rain!). So setting up this club will offer a secure and safe space for young people in Newham, all year round. It will help further develop the growing skateboarding community in Newham, and show the positive side of skateboarding, the impact it can have on peoples lives, and show Newham that skateboarding is more than just a sport.

Natasha Zielazinski7 months ago E6 Women’s Choir is a creative women’s choir project which supports the empowerment of women to raise their voices with confidence and joy. This choir is for women of all ages, experiences and cultural backgrounds and will be a place to connect, to meet new people, to feel the joy of singing together, and to learn beautiful music. Singing together has an immensely positive impact on our health and wellbeing - you will leave these sessions breathing better but also feeling uplifted in your mood. This choir is a welcoming space for everyone. No musical experience is needed, just an interest in music and meeting others.

Marie Hardie7 months ago Community Creative is a year-long creative programme designed to bring inclusive, joyful and creative activities to the East Ham neighbourhood. We will run a gardening club on weekdays for young people to be outside and connect with nature in a creative and exploratory way. On weekends we will run performing arts classes for young people interested in storytelling, theatre and performance - these sessions will aim to boost confidence and creative expression. And lastly, we will offer family drop-in art sessions, to create and make with local artists, including sessions for drawing, working with clay, animation and puppet making. This project will be delivered by Brampton Primary School, however the aim of this community arts project is to bring together and invite young people and their families from across the neighbourhood to be creative, expressive and to feel joyful in connecting with others.

Skate Newham7 months ago Brampton Skatepark has already been transformed from an underused corner into one of East Ham’s most vibrant community hubs. Home to a mini-ramp, cement slab with skateable features, art murals, and free lessons that have introduced over 55 local young people to skateboarding. But this is just the beginning.We’re now asking YOU, the East Ham community, to help design the next phase of Brampton Skatepark. With People Powered Places funding, we will run creative design workshops where residents, families, and young people can shape the future of the space. Using clay, models, sketches, and ideas, together we’ll create a five year blueprint for a skatepark that reflects our community’s vision and gives us the strength to attract further funding beyond PPP.Then, using professional skate park building companies, we’ll turn your design ideas into reality. The first build phase will deliver bold new features, designed in consultation with you, transforming the space into an even more dynamic, creative, and inclusive hub for all wheels and all ages.This project is for everyone, skateboarders, BMX riders, rollerskaters, scooters, families, and residents of all ages. Together, we’ll grow East Ham into a safer, healthier, more creative place to live.This is your park, let’s build it together!

Liesel Pillay7 months ago Through our youth-led project, Year 6 children have generated a proposal to support pupils’ well-being by improving the playground provision at our school.Our project will transform a currently hard and uninspiring outdoor area into an engaging sensory play space that directly improves the quality of life for children in our school and the wider community. Here are the ideas from the pupils: A sensory outdoor play zone including climbing structures, messy play area, building stations, a climbing frame, sensory boards and a reading tepee. This funding will enable us to deliver a sustainable infrastructure that will benefit the whole school for years to come. We want to create well-designed, durable resources so that the investment continues to improve wellbeing, inclusion, learning and community connection well into the future.

Delores McPherson7 months ago The Ubuntu Project will create a safe, supportive, and inclusive space for women aged 50 and above in Newham to come together, share experiences, and thrive. Rooted in the African philosophy of Ubuntu – “I am because we are” – the project will reduce loneliness and empower older women to play an active role in shaping their community.Newham is one of the most diverse boroughs in London, yet many women over 50 face barriers such as isolation, limited social opportunities, and a lack of culturally relevant wellbeing support. According to the 2021 Census, over 1,825 women aged 50+ live in East Ham alone. Our consultation with local women confirmed a strong demand: 100% said they would attend such a group, and menopause was identified as a vital subject for open discussion.Meeting twice monthly at East Ham Library, women will take part in specialist workshops, wellbeing activities (e.g. Kintsugi Art, Tree of Life), skills-sharing, and peer support. Menopause UK, financial wellbeing specialists, and local creatives will contribute expertise.By the end of the project, participants will have built lasting friendships, improved wellbeing, and developed a buddy support network that continues beyond funding – leaving a legacy of connection, resilience, and community pride.

The primary goal is to create a welcoming, inclusive space where individuals of all ages and backgrounds can gather to learn sewing, share ideas, and build meaningful connections.We aim to offer free sewing workshops led by experienced professionals, providing access to sewing machines, materials, and guidance that may otherwise be unavailable to some members of the community due to cost or lack of access. By removing these barriers, we empower participants to develop practical skills that can support creative expression, mental well-being, and even potential income opportunities.This project will particularly benefit individuals who may feel socially isolated, such as the elderly, newcomers to the area, or those experiencing economic hardship. Sewing together encourages conversation, collaboration, and a sense of belonging—fostering a stronger, more connected community.We are applying for funding to help cover the cost of sewing machines, fabrics, tools, and space rental, as well as to support outreach efforts to ensure the program is inclusive and widely accessible. Detta Danford7 months ago East Ham Drummers is a resident-led, intergenerational drumming ensemble for families and community members. The group will offer a welcoming and accessible space for people to come together to play drums. Through collaborating, connecting, and creating, the ensemble will generate new beats and relationships. The music created will be inspired by members of the ensemble and will be performed for the community at local cultural events. Drumming as a collective supports people to feel a sense of wellbeing and belonging while creating new rhythms offers an exhilarating and enjoyable opportunity to share ideas and make music together. Sessions are open to all, with no musical experience necessary. Sessions will be led by project partners Drum Works, with residents taking the lead with the direction and organisation of the ensemble. The long-term aim is to develop an integrated, enduring and sustainable community drumming ensemble open to everyone in East Ham.

Junaid Ibrahim7 months ago The Newham Cycling League is a free, monthly cycling race series for primary school pupils in Years 3–6 across the borough. Each session will be held at local parks — Plashet Park, Stratford Park, and Central Park — with rotating formats and year groups to ensure all schools have access.The League is designed to increase cycling participation in Newham, where low bike ownership and limited access to training mean many children miss out on the physical, social, and mental benefits of cycling. By providing free bikes, helmets, and fully staffed events, we remove barriers to participation and give children a safe, structured environment to ride.A running leaderboard across schools will foster excitement, friendly competition, and a sense of achievement, while also encouraging healthy, regular activity. From previous projects, we know children who engage with our programmes begin cycling more frequently, including to school and around their neighbourhoods.Delivered by local British Cycling–qualified coaches, supported by volunteers and school staff, the League will reach around 330 children directly, with broader benefits for families and communities. With funding, we can provide high-quality, inclusive, and sustainable events that build confidence, health, and community pride across Newham.

Hafsa Ibrahim7 months ago Adventures Beyond Newham has been designed by Year 6 pupils at Lathom Junior School to give children opportunities they would not normally access, supporting their wellbeing and broadening their horizons.For our pupils, these are not just trips - they are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to build confidence, resilience, and friendships, while broadening horizons and creating memories they will treasure forever. These experiences will give children the belief that their voices matter, that their dreams are valid, and that they are capable of achieving more than they imagined.The children chose three key experiences: watching a live West End performance at the Lyceum Theatre, tackling outdoor adventure challenges at Go Ape, and enjoying a celebratory meal at a restaurant. The project will help pupils grow in confidence, resilience, and teamwork, while also building cultural capital and giving them memories they will carry into the future. By supporting Adventures Beyond Newham, you will be helping children step into secondary school equipped not only with academic learning, but with the confidence, cultural capital, and resilience to thrive throughout their lives and contribute positively to their community.

Located in East Ham, this market serves as a hub for people to access high-quality produce, dairy, meats, baked goods, and other handmade items. The market is designed to be inclusive and open to all, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and reducing food waste.The project seeks to expand its offerings by adding extra stalls that focus on unique or niche products such as organic herbs, homemade preserves, and plant-based alternatives. Additionally, garden stalls will be introduced to promote urban gardening, providing people with the tools and knowledge to grow their own food at home. These stalls will offer everything from seedlings to gardening tips, encouraging a greener, more self-sufficient community.The market will rely on volunteers to help with setup, management, and assisting customers, creating opportunities for local residents to get involved. Volunteers will also help run workshops on topics such as sustainable living, food education, and gardening.Ultimately, the purpose of this project is to create a vibrant community space that promotes healthier living, supports local agriculture, and engages residents in hands-on activities that benefit both individuals and the environment.

Jessica Craig7 months ago Bonny Downs Community Association (BDCA) needs £20,000 to fund a part-time Youth Lead to deliver weekly activities for young people in East Ham. With the help of sessional youthworkers and tutors, they will run free weekly sessions over two evenings a week including: football on the MUGA at Flanders Field, gym sessions in the pavilion with a personal trainer, calming crafts to support mental health, and drama classes led by a local actor who was in Eastenders. We already have match funding for six month’s activity costs, and the new Youth Lead will work with young people to find funds for more. BDCA has a great track record as part of a Newham-commissioned youthwork consortium since 2021. Last year in partnership with another local charity, we delivered 796 hours of youthwork to 599 young people in East Ham. Funding cuts mean we are rebuilding from scratch – and we hope you can help us. This is important because there’s no other youth club in East Ham, and young people need a positive alternative to being unsupervised on the street after school. This fully inclusive project will improve their health, wellbeing, and skills and help them feel part of the community.

Led by professional forest school facilitators and local artists, this will include an after school gardening club for local schools, and intergenerational storytelling/creative workshops for all ages. Building on previous events at The Rainbow Garden and the Skate Park, we will be celebrating the creativity and rapid growth in our gardens and imaginations at this exciting time of year.

Ann Ashton7 months ago East Ham Explorers proposes to support people in our community to enjoy wild and outdoor spaces in and around Newham and England, supporting their physical and mental wellbeing. We will be running community day trips to National Heritage sites and other fun and exciting destinations in southern England.We aim to encourage reduced car use, by having a central meeting point from which we set off, for those who may not be confident to travel by public transport otherwise. It also allows the many who don’t own cars to access places they would otherwise struggle to get to. Our project proposes to support people in our community to get to know one another through our day trips. This frequent attendance at events aims to not just introduce people, but to build long-term connections and friendships across our diverse, but often poorly integrated population.The locations have been selected to have cross generational and gender appeal, with some very local which can be accessed by bus and tube. Some further afield by train and coach. Some predominantly indoor visits for the colder months and others which are more outdoor focused for the warmer months.The locations that we have polled to be most popular include Hertfordshire ZooAnglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode MillJurassic CoastWarwick CastleKew GardensHouses of ParliamentMargateWe plan to end the project with a 2 night trip to the Isle of Wight, hiring out an entire youth hostel, running yoga classes, communal cooking with a fun evening of games and days walking and visiting local landmarks and natural spaces.

Sarah Shava7 months ago Our project will provide children and young people in Newham with safe, inclusive, and engaging opportunities to take part in cultural, social, and recreational activities during school holiday periods. Many families in our borough face financial hardship, limiting access to trips, enrichment opportunities, and structured programmes. This project ensures that every child, regardless of background, has the chance to learn, grow, and participate in their community.We will deliver a programme of day trips and group activities during all six school holiday periods in the year. Each holiday, two groups of children will take part in activities such as museum visits, cultural experiences, outdoor exploration, and community events. We aim to reach 600 children per year (50 per month).The project’s purpose is to: Increase children’s sense of belonging and pride in their community Build positive relationships among young people from diverse backgrounds Provide safe, structured opportunities during school holidays Encourage volunteering and parental/community involvement Improve wellbeing and aspirations through creative and educational experiences By funding this project, you will help create inclusive opportunities that reduce isolation, promote cohesion, and give children and families memories and skills that last a lifetime.

Newham will deliver inclusive rehearsals of an original play culminating in 7 performances at Newham Primary schools and 1 community performance in East Ham.Through these performances, led by disabled members of the community, we aim to allow children to see disabled people in leadership roles from an early age. We aim to challenge stereotypes around disability, encourage positive attitudes towards diversity and contribute to greater social cohesion and justice from the earliest possible stage. Our school performances will be accompanied by drama workshops led by our disabled members, which will encourage creative expression and open up age-appropriate discussions around access and inclusion between children and disabled members of the local community. By performing in schools with strong SEND support, we will also provide an opportunity for some children to see themselves represented on stage and in leadership roles.

The project will provide a series of activities designed to bring families together, improve health, and open opportunities for children and parents to learn new skills.The programme will include Family Fitness Sessions with trained coaches, Parent Wellbeing Workshops led by mental health professionals, and Outdoor Adventure Trips to give children experiences beyond the borough. A Community Family Event will celebrate achievements and bring people together, while Educational and Cultural Workshops will expand children’s horizons in history, literature, and the arts.The project is designed to remove financial and social barriers faced by many families in Newham, offering subsidised activities that build confidence, resilience, and community spirit. Parents and carers will also be encouraged to get involved in delivery, helping to strengthen local ties and create a lasting impact.By investing in families, wellbeing, and learning, this project will leave a positive legacy at Lathom School and in the wider East Ham community.

Detta Danford7 months ago Future Band is a creative music ensemble developed by and for young people from the Central Park Estate (including Brampton Primary, Central Park Primary, New City Primary and Vicarage Road Primary). It is a unique opportunity for students to work together with others from across the school, to make and perform new music. The project will run for 2 terms (Summer/Autumn 2026) and is for Key Stage 2 + 3. Young people involved in the project will: Collaborate together to make, play and perform new music Work collectively to co-design and deliver the project Be involved as young creative ensemble leaders

But the much loved Water Play area was damaged by an electrical fire, leaving behind an empty space that disappoints children and families.With your support, we can bring it back to life. We plan to replace the old shower with a "Flower bucket" – a playful feature with random tipping buckets that surprise kids with splashes of water. It also conserves water, making every drop count.Play is essential for children’s physical health and mental wellbeing. Water play is especially popular and parents across Newham have been working with the Parks team to ensure we have active water play around the borough so all kids can enjoy.Restoring Central Park’s Water Play means every child in East Ham can enjoy these joyful experiences right on their doorstep.Working equipment will encourage families to spend more quality time in the park, keeping it vibrant, welcoming, and well-used.Bring back the splash, laughter, and joy of play. Janani Paramsothy8 months ago We are a group of Newham residents and people with a strong local connection to the Borough who are aiming to ensure that people in Newham who can’t afford to pay for legal advice can access specialist help and representation in areas such as housing and homelessness, and problems with immigration status. In 2024 a legal advice needs assessment From Disparity to Fairness: Legal Access in Newham was carried out on behalf of the steering group by Fieldfisher LLP and The Public Law Project. Surveys were sent to local organisations, and interviews conducted with Stephen Timms MP constituency caseworkers. The report evidenced that whilst there are a number of excellent local not for profit advice providers in Newham, they are already severely overstretched and caseworkers found it difficult to make referrals for more specialist advice and representation.Our overall aim is for a fairer Newham where disadvantaged people experiencing poverty, breaches of their human rights or discrimination can access justice, leading to improvements in health and well- being. In addition to the one to one legal casework we will provide “Know Your Rights” sessions covering areas such as dealing with housing disrepair, understanding changes in immigration legislation, and dealing with rent arrears. These sessions will be aimed at empowering local residents and the frontline workers who support them. We are currently in the process of becoming a constituted charity, and plan to launch the legal service in 2026. By the end of 2026 we will transition to becoming a Community Law Centre. We plan to rent office space in the premises of Community Links. Our service will be embedded in the Newham community and have effective partnerships with the other advice providers and community groups.. We will apply for legal aid contracts, and other grants, but need funding to kickstart the foundation of the legal service, so we can employ immigration and housing solicitors and cover our running costs.

Pamela Rene-Gilkes7 months ago Pam’s People CIC is a newly formed Black-led not-for-profit with over 14 years experience running joyful, inclusive movement programmes across Newham. We currently lead Zumba, Salsa and chair-based fitness at Stratford and Canning Town Libraries, helping adults feel better in their bodies and more connected to others.Now, through the People Powered Places programme, and with your support we’d love to bring two brand-new classes to East Ham through a project called East Ham Moves.These sessions include:Soul Line Dancing – simple steps and joyful routines that anyone can follow. No partner needed. These classes are low-impact, uplifting and full of feel-good energy.Walking & Mobility – guided weekly walks with built-in strength, balance and flexibility exercises. A great way to stay active in a friendly group, especially for those who want a gentle, supported way to move more.We know many people in East Ham would love to move more, but might feel put off by traditional gyms or health clubs that don’t reflect them. Some are living with long-term health conditions. Others are facing the cost-of-living crisis or recovering from isolation and low mood. Whatever the reason, we believe everyone deserves access to welcoming, culturally relevant activities in their own neighbourhood.East Ham Moves is about removing those barriers and inviting people to join something positive, local, and fun.If you believe that every adult deserves the chance to move more, connect with others, and feel better in their body, we’d love your support for East Ham Moves.Together, we can help more residents in East Ham -Move. Shalali Thakur7 months ago SCS: Strengthen, Condition & StretchThe aim of this project is to host monthly SCS classes for 12 months in the evening for all women especially targeted at (working) mothers and perimenopausal women. Inclusive of women who are suffering from health conditions that may come from age such as osteoarthritis.The expectation here is not for the women to already be an Olympic champion, instead its an approachable environment where we can slowly and safely build strength and flexibility and promote healing.The unique aspect of these classes is that many of the exercises will be done as partners to deepen stretches and form friendships, connection and laughter. The exercises taught can be taken home so that they can practise the exercises with their partners, children and friends.After motherhood and during menopause, women's bodies undergo many changes. The aim of SCS is to be a safe space where women can share what their struggles and physical goals are. We want to gently enable them to build confidence into their bodies knowing that age is just a number and that our bodies are capable of achieving what we like via compassion, love and support.
