Anyone who lives, learns or works in the Community Neighbourhood of East Ham can vote for their 10 favourite projects.

Make sure you vote for 10 projects before submitting your vote. You can modify your vote until 12 November at 8pm when the voting phase closes. There are 49 proposals to choose from in East Ham. They have been shortlisted by your working group. Now, it's your time to vote!

You can only vote in your Community Neighbourhood, and you can only vote once. Make sure you indicate a valid postcode and door number from the Community Neighbourhood area when you vote.

Real-life examples and relatable scenarios serve as powerful teaching tools, nurturing a sense of skepticism and critical thinking among seniors. The program places a strong emphasis on secure online practices, equipping participants with practical guidance on password security, safe online navigation, and authentication measures. By fostering open communication and a safe space, participants will be encouraged to voice concerns, seek advice, and independently verify requests before taking action. This program serves as a dynamic resource, empowering elderly individuals to remain vigilant, informed, and resilient against scams in an increasingly digital world.

Kasia Fallan3 years ago I will be running free knitting sessions in East Ham for all ages and abilities, to encourage young and old people to create a knitting community within the local area. I’ve been knitting since I was 5 years old, and have just graduated from university in Cambridge, where I was running a similar group. I will be running monthly get-togethers for anyone who loves knitting, or wants to learn, where we chat and share skills and progress. Knitting has proven health and well-being benefits for all ages and so, even if it is associated more with older people, I’d like to use this group as an opportunity for young people to meet others in their community and for generations to learn together. I want to tackle loneliness in both young and old in East Ham, as well as providing a fun way to reduce stress and anxiety. I will use the funding to provide free materials for members to take home, hot drinks and snacks, and advertisement for the sessions. I am hoping to hold the sessions at Red Door Studios on Masterman Road.

paul dawson3 years ago Newham CC Colts have been operating as a volunteer charity org for 16 years. We have 90+ members, boys and girls, and we engage in the Met Essex competitions (inside M25) as well as the elite Essex Comps, where we struggle to compete, as our best players and coaches are poached by these richer clubs. We play at Flanders, which has the only grass pitches in Newham and Tower Hamlets, and the enormous demand for adult cricket restricts youth cricket, as the youngsters cannot match the finances required to secure pitches. We need to pay coaches expenses and secure access to more facilities to provide Newham with youth cricket services to match the demand, as we have to turn children away at present.

Karis White3 years ago For the 2024 round of People Powered Places, I'd like to bid for a large and beautiful mural on the corner of Rancliffe Road and Basil Avenue. This is the full side of an end-terraced house (see attachment for photo). The mural will inject creativity, colour, and create a sense of pride and identity in our neighbourhood. As well as an unloved road, Basil Avenue is plagued by fly tipping and I believe that a mural will make this a much happier place for people to be.Street art benefits local communities in the following ways: creating a sense of place and contributing to a distinctive identity engaging communities supporting way-finding celebrating cultural diversity  breaking down barriers between people of all ages and backgrounds contributing to the wider cultural offer having a positive impact on health, wellbeing and happinessThe final mural will be co-designed by the local community. If selected, I will hold two face-to-face drop-in sessions for the community (advertised through flyers and social media), and two surveys to ensure that together, we co-create the design that WE want.Please note: following community engagement already and in order respect all communities, please be assured there will be no facial features of animals or people. But, there will be colour, life and inspiration!I am working to hire an experienced mural company who will execute this project. As a community, we would co-design the art with their artist who would engage with all of our community feedback.I welcome any and all feedback (please comment below), concerns and ideas about this exciting project, and I really look forward to working with the community to create something beautiful for all of us!Please note:This project is subject to permission being granted by the Highways Team if successful and the re-budgeting of the project to include cost of NRWSA licence from Highways.

Our core mission is to educate, inspire, and foster a sense of community among these future leaders. We are applying for funding because we believe that this initiative has the power to create a lasting impact on our community and the business landscape of Newham.Purpose of the project:Our project revolves around the establishment of a vibrant book club that focuses on entrepreneurial literature. Here's why we are passionate about it: Education: We recognize that knowledge is the foundation of success. By selecting thought-provoking books on entrepreneurship and business, we aim to provide our members with valuable insights, strategies, and a strong educational foundation. Inspiration: We intend to invite successful entrepreneurs as guest speakers to our club. Chess is a totally inclusive game and I believe such tables will benefit the people of East Ham as somewhere they can go with friends or to meet new friends over a game of chess. Funmy Adeojo3 years ago We are opening E6-Sister’s Food Library/Community Pantry to everyone considering the cost-of-living crisis biting everyone lately.We would welcome anyone, young and elderly, families with young children or travelling families, illegal immigrants and itinerants and parents or families who do not have any fixed abode, who needs extra support during these tough times can access without any professional referrals or the traditional limitation of CAP ineligibility, We would simply ask people to sign up as a member and contribute a small contribution towards stock and running costs per visit. The E6-Sister’s Food Library/Community Pantry will offer fresh, frozen, tinned, jarred, and packaged food all at a fraction of the price of the supermarkets.Anyone who wishes to use the Pantry is welcome to do so. Guests who have been referred to us by other community organisations will be offered the same membership. The membership fee for all guests is £10. This membership fee allows residents toaccess The Food Library/Community pantry twice per week - every week! - for a whole year.There will also be a small contribution payable for each visit. This fee will be between£10 and depends on which tier of service you'd like to use, which is shop only one basket or 2 baskets is the maximum on each visit.During each visit, the resident would be invited to browse the wide selection of foods and household items we have on offer and fill up a largebasket with whatever they'd like without anyone forcing things they don’t like or eat on them; they can shop a maximum of 2basket full of goods at each visit to enable others to access the same quality of goods available. There would be weekly recipes available to promote a healthy home cook for families A full and thorough explanation of this can be found in the enclosed.Welcome Pack, but if anyone has any questions, they are very welcome to give us a call or email and we'd be happy to answer your queries. Which would be displayed and available when we are fully running.If anyone'd like to register for this service enclosed Welcome Pack and return the completed registration form. we can be found on Google on the Facebook search and anyone with technology skills will be able to use the QR code. all the items would be displayed on the foldaway mobile cart in the Eastham Library to enable easy access as well as to prevent the disturbance of other services that use the library. at the end of each week, the foldable cart would be wheeled away for restocking (please see the picture of the foldable mobile cart workstation below)our aim in opening an accessible food Library would be to eliminate poverty and pride among ourselves among our youths, as the majority that needs help is always too shy or pride to ask for help due to the stigma of what other people would be thinking of them or saying about them hence a lot of people feel so shy to ask for help or visit food bank as they don’t know who will see them etc. This Food Library would prevent huge food waste among our residents most of the food bank only gives whatever is packaged in a bag even though the majority may not be able to eat what they are given e.g. "You take what you are given" even if they don't know how to eat it" The Food Library would give the resident a place of their own even if they don’t have much. it would boost their confidence in the ability to buy things for themselves with the little contributions they make on a weekly visit to the pantry. it would prevent junk foods in our youth by providing healthy food at a very affordable rate to eradicate starvation stealing and shoplifting of daily needs from the High Street stores. According to Daily Mail on the (26th of July 2023) mentioned shoplifting epidemic has turned Britain's High Street Stores into the battlefield, items such as daily needs such as milk, babyhoods, and chocolate bars skyrocketed which resulted in the security tags being used on daily needs. Police data suggests a 75% rise in stealing food, drink, and baby formula also mentioned that retail thefts have reached the highest leave in England and Wales according to reports. we would use our signpost leaflets would be shared online and among residents to create awareness before we start opening our service. Opening hours would be from Thursdays -Fridays 9 am to 6 pm to enable those at work that may want to access the Food Library to have a chance. More so, we would have a special event during the festive periods such as Easter, Christmas, Eid, and any cultural event to promote resident cultural backgrounds such as Diwali, Chinese New Year Halloween and many more. Finally, the aim of this project is the use all the skills I have acquired in the last 15 years in the sporting goods industry dealing with dealerships and manufactural direct to the locals to meet their needs and giving back to the community when the community can figure out a solution to their problems it works well without waiting on government. There is a say that says when food is available and accessible poverty diminishes and stability returns. Meanwhile, details of all the manufacturers and dealers who have accepted our registration such as Sos wholesalers, clearance XL, and Harrison dealers would be attached to my main application.

Yolanda Musinguzi 3 years ago East Ham Goes Wild proposes to support people in our community to enjoy wild and outdoor spaces in and around Newham, supporting their physical and mental well-being, while improving our local spaces through monthly litter picks and a wild window box initiative. Promoting pride in the appearance of our homes and streets is to be celebrated through a trail, with those participating posting locations on a jumble trail map which will be celebrated with a wild flowers around Newham walk in June 2024 We will be running community walks and trips to Newham parks, woodlands, and further afield to Newham owned Debden house campsite, aiming to encourage reduced car use, by having a central meeting point from which we set off, for those who may not be confident to walk or travel by public transport otherwise. We will be working with the students of Central Park and Lathom schools to develop signs encouraging people to not litter, idle car engines, leave food for birds or drive e-scooters in walking spaces.Our project proposes to support people in our community to get to know one another through our “wild” meet-ups, an online forum, community events, and a camping trip to Debden campsite. This frequent attendance at events aims to not just introduce people but to build long-term connections and friendships across our diverse, but often poorly integrated population. Hannah Duthie3 years ago Help the community in Rainbow Gardens that has grown (thanks to previous Community Assembly funding) create new pathways and renew the concrete so we can be fully accessible and inclusive space. The ground is crumbling and uneven which means we have to rope off unsafe areas before we can open to the community. A new concrete base would mean we could be fully open and could accommodate wheelchair users in our community gardening sessions.Please note:This project is subject to permission being granted by the Parks Team if successful

Sovra Newman3 years ago Promote the Health and Well Being benefits of singing. Especially in the elderly and retired who live on their own and are lonely. Singing is a great cardio-vascular exercise. Promotes good breathing. And releases endorphins that make you feel good. OUTREACH: The choir would like to go out about once a month to sing for different audiences including care homes and sheltered housing. A CHOIR IN EVERY CARE HOME Encourage a regular audience to participate when we visit. Local collaborations too. For example: St. Bartholomew's Church (where the choir meets). East Ham Library and Newham Music Academy.

Katie Blake3 years ago The Covid-19 Pandemic affected every single one of us in the UK. In many cases it continues to have a lasting impact on lives. Every one of our experiences are unique. This project will be an opportunity to share the impact it had on you and your life with the UK Government. Our Community will be able to share as much or as little information as they feel able. I would like to engage with young people and older people within the Newham Community. We can’t change the past but by sharing our experience with the UK Covid-19 Inquiry Team we can help them to understand and assess the full picture of how the Pandemic impacted lives.

Fatima Campos Duarte3 years ago I am writing to request funding for a training programme aimed at empowering young people who are unemployed by teaching them the art of braiding afro hair. This programme seeks to address the issue of unemployment among young individuals and provide them with a valuable skillset that can potentially lead to sustainable employment opportunities and financial independence. This will also lead to enhanced mental health. I am a qualified hair dresser by trade. I am a single mother and I am currently in temporary accommodation with my children. However, I still believe that I can make a difference with my skills and talents.Background:The unemployment rate among young people in our community is alarmingly high, and it has become imperative for us to take action. At the same time, we have noticed a growing demand for African-inspired hairstyles, particularly afro hair braiding, in our local area. By aligning these two factors, we believe we can create a training programme that not only addresses the unemployment issue but also taps into the market demand for afro hair braiding services. Everybody will be welcome on this project, irrespective of race, gender, sexual orientation or religion. This project will not only foster and enhance intercultural understandings, it will also give all individuals to learn new skills and potentially seek employment with it or go on to further training.Objective:The primary objective of this training programme is to equip unemployed young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the art of braiding afro hair. I aim to provide them with comprehensive training that covers various techniques, styles, and trends, ensuring that they are well-prepared to meet the expectations and needs of potential clients.Implementation:To ensure the success and effectiveness of this programme, we will collaborate with experienced hair braiding professionals who will serve as both instructors and mentors to the trainees. The programme will be structured into a series of hands-on training sessions, interactive workshops, and practical assignments to provide trainees with real-world exposure and experience. Additionally, I plan to organise guest lectures and industry visits to further enhance the trainees' understanding and knowledge of the industry.Benefits:By supporting this programme, you will not only be investing in the lives of unemployed young individuals but also contributing to the economic growth and development of our community. Upon completion of the training, participants will have the opportunity to start their own braiding businesses or find employment in existing salons. This would cover the costs of hiring instructors and mentors, organising training sessions and workshops, providing necessary equipment and materials, as well as administrative expenses.Conclusion:I firmly believe that by investing in the training and empowerment of young people through this programme, we can make a significant positive impact on their lives and the community as a whole. Adrian Levy3 years ago Today in East Ham many young people are living in difficult financial conditions, in families where English is a second or third language and where they have disengaged with school. They run the risk of being left behind and not reaching their potential. At Peppo, we believe every child is important and their future should not be determined by their financial background. Our proposal consists of providing tutoring and increasing the social experiences for 30 financially disadvantaged GCSE students in East Ham, referred by the community centre, Bonny Downs.These young people will be provided with 10 hours of one-to-one tutoring, which will be supplemented by 20 hours of one-to-three tutoring, in their chosen subjects. This tutoring will be delivered by expert and highly trained tutors. To help build rapport, we will seek to match the students with tutors from similar backgrounds, allowing for an additional mentoring relationship to form. Tutoring has proven to increase a child’s educational progress by up to five months, which means that the support they will receive at a crucial point in their academic studies has the potential to be life-changing for them and their families.As a celebration of being a part of this project, the students will be invited to Peppo’s Pioneer Day in Canary Wharf. At this event, there will be speakers from a range of careers talking about various exciting options. This will be followed by an afternoon of celebration and water sports at the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre. All these activities are aimed at inspiring and broadening horizons.Peppo is a not-for-profit, founded in 2021, against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic by Adrian Levy, a senior lawyer with over 30 years of experience. Peppo has provided over 3,500 hours of tutoring to children across the UK and since it started has operated in East Ham. One parent recently described the tutoring as “a golden ticket”. david merrion3 years ago This projects aim is to improve Eastham Fire Station’s presence within the local area of Eastham. We want to make Eastham Fire station a focal point within the community by making it brighter, more vibrant, with a welcoming & inviting aura. Apart from attending daily emergency call outs we also provide and work with a range of youth groups within the area such as, Schools, scouts, brownies, fire cadets etc at station. We provide a space to for these youths to come to station to teach and train about fire safety, how to act in an emergency whilst building a report to create a lasting trust between themselves and emergency services. We also provide fire safety advice and guidance to local residents on how to keep themselves, their families and the local community safer by educating the various risks of causes of fire and prevention. We do this at home and commercial addresses but also at the fire station.Our plan is to re image the fire station courtyard which spans over 50m with an array of wooden planters, trellis & hanging baskets to provide year round blooms to create a colourful space for the locals to enjoy, to increase our presence within the community, to become more inviting for locals, to improve local engagement, to continue building a healthy report with youth in the area and to develop the Eastham area. We would also build upon our memorial area for fallen firefighters within the courtyard, again to plant year round blooms, to fit a spotlight for the firefighter plaque, have a working solar water feature and a bug hotel. We would build a multi-function staging area to provide a safer area to work with youth that visit the station, and to provide fire advice to locals in a warmer/ inviting setting, this would be a composite decking that would need minimal upkeep and maintenance, with yearly planted blooms to provide a safe space for all that visit Eastham Fire station

This project aims to promote physical health by providing a structured program that enhances cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, improving stamina, leadership skills team building exercises and health and nutrition awareness.The program can help combat sedentary lifestyle and associated health issues contributing to an overall healthier community Furthermore Kit out London - Future Stars program cultivates mental resilience and discipline. Through rigorous training and focus on technique and skill. Participants learn to overcome challenges and setbacks, fostering growth mindset that translates to other aspects of their lives.Please note:This project is subject to permission being granted by the Parks Team if successful

Farzana Hakim3 years ago My project is all about giving the residents of East Ham a voice whilst promoting well-being and a sense of empowerment and community engagement. I am applying for this funding because I recently did some projects for Newham as a Freelance artist where I interviewed local residents from the South Asian Diaspora here; some who had arrived in Newham as early as 1961, penniless and with no English language. Having had their stories featured at various events and platforms during Newham Heritage Month, these residents felt empowered, emotional and greatly valued. The women especially were happy as they’d never really had a chance to integrate with the wider community here, or never had reminisced and told their fascinating stories about their journeys and life as a resident here. I want to do more of this in East Ham. I want to extend this to our youth and young adults who are disenfranchised by the clash of culture and country. I want to open up my project and give residents some empowerment whilst using creative writing as a tool of well-being and as a tool of feeling valued.It’s so important to have stories heard and preserved. I’ve run workshops for women where writing creatively has become a passion and a form of expression and often an escape from toxic and abusive environments. Writing empowered me. I’m a published author and an editor, as well as an educator at schools, where I use my voice to empower teachers and pupils by encouraging the telling and sharing of stories from different cultures; promoting the de-colonisation of the curriculum. This needs to extended to all the generations of families here in East Ham. My project aims to provide a platform to share stories and talk about experiences. I want to help residents find their voices.

Marie Hardie3 years ago The aim of this project is to build community through music-making and performance - working in partnership with the wider arts sector, resulting in opportunities for participants to experience being part of a community choir, taking part in music workshops and performances. We aim to increase social cohesion through singing and playing music in groups - allowing opportunities to share experiences and learn together, creating bonds and connections, resulting in an increase in wellbeing through self-expression.

Tim Drage3 years ago IntroductionThis series of four workshops will provide a creative environment for local people to creatively explore the world of sound art, electronic music and circuit building. Participants will be able construct their own simple synth and customise it into a unique handmade electronic instrument.The sessions will be open to anyone interested in creatively experimenting with sound, from curious beginners to experienced sound artists or musicians looking to develop new techniques. Participants will be able to develop their own personal ideas while also working together collectively with others in the community. The workshops will be facilitated by experienced sound artists who can provide both creative and technical support and guidance throughout. All necessary equipment and materials will be provided.At the end of each session, everyone will have the opportunity to present their work and receive supportive and constructive feedback from the group. After the workshops they will be able to take away any instruments they create during the workshops to further explore and play in their own time.These sound art workshops are intended to foster and cultivate creativity and self-expression, offering a space for building connections within the community while also encouraging local talent. Lisa McKendrick3 years ago INTRODUCTIONFour art workshop sessions in East Ham to cater to a wide range of interests and preferences. Each workshop will have two facilitators, additional volunteers and offer at least two separate activities exploring different themes. These may include painting, mono-printing, masks, collage, card and zine making. Participants will have the freedom to move between activities or focus on one. Each workshop session will conclude with an informal and fun sharing session, where participants will have the opportunity to get supportive feedback from the group.The workshops offer an enjoyable and interactive experience, with all necessary materials and equipment included. Their purpose is to create a space for community members to delve into and unleash their artistic potential, acquire fresh abilities, and give voice to their creativity. These sessions are designed to accommodate individuals of varying artistic backgrounds, catering to beginners as well as those more experienced, who are looking to further develop their skills.They will explore a variety of mixed media providing participants with a solid foundation to explore further. This process will be facilitated by art professionals who will provide support and guidance throughout. Elaine Kite 3 years ago Our primary objective is to provide a comprehensive range of activities promoting wellbeing among children and their families, with a specific focus on food cultivation and the importance of consuming fresh, healthy produce. Our program entails a series of educational workshops, consisting of seven sessions, each lasting two hours. Workshops will be delivered between April and September 2024, with a launch event in April and an Evaluation event in September 2024.Please note:This project is subject to permission being granted by the Parks Team if successful

Nicole Adair3 years ago A Tranquil Space:To provide a Lovely Tropical, Communal Garden, for the residents where we live.To make use of this run down and neglected garden space to improve our Quality of well being, the quality of air we are breathing, to promote togetherness, wellbeing, and happiness amongst the tenants, and the local community.To also provide the children and families with seating areas to come together to share a meal, for children to be able to sit outside/ play and do there homework in an uplifting environment that combats isolation, and loneliness in our community.Please note:This project is subject to permission being granted by the Housing Team if successful
