Elizabeth Lutterodt-Clottey10 months ago Hello, my name is Elizabeth and I am 18 years old. I want to create a podcast for the Newham community called Behind The Minds: BOSS. This project will bring together young people aged 11–21, giving them a platform to share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations in a way that is truly heard and valued.The podcast will be a safe and comfortable space where we can talk openly about the issues that matter most to young people from school pressures and friendships to identity, relationships, and the everyday struggles of growing up. Guests will be able to share personal stories and perspectives, while also finding common ground through laughter, shared experiences, and relatable conversations. By balancing both serious and lighthearted moments, Behind The Minds will show the full picture of what it means to grow up in Newham today.This project is about more than just conversations. It’s about bridging the gap between young people and the wider community. Too often, young people are labelled as ‘deviant’ but when we actually listen, we see that they are often misunderstood. By giving them this platform, the community can gain real insight into why young people think, feel, and act the way they do where they actually feel heard and not judged andmost importantly, how we can better support them.In the long term, Behind The Minds could also contribute to tackling serious issues such as bullying, self-harm, youth violence, and knife crime. Many of these challenges stem from feelings of isolation, low self-worth, or not being understood. By diving deeper into the thoughts and lived experiences of young people, this podcast can help uncover root causes, create dialogue, and spark solutions. Ultimately, the project aims to help young people feel valued, supported, and less alone in their struggles while showing that their voices matter.

Terrence Regan10 months ago My name is Terry Regan; I run a weekly group session supporting mental wellbeing. I hope to expand upon this work by establishing a regular podcast series that will air across my social media platforms - reaching a wider audience and raising awareness. Sadly suicide rates among men continue to increase. It is estimated that 12 men lose their life to suicide everyday. Men are still grappling with damaging and outmoded stereotypes of masculinity. As a result men have struggled and continue to struggle with emotive self-expression, they feel unable to share their feelings and thoughts. I am determined to break the stigma and this vicious cycle, believing empathetic conversation and active listening holds the key to a more understanding culture.I have lived in Custom House for nearly sixty years and care deeply about this area and its community. I have set up this project to combat these issues and bring the community together. I myself have struggled in the past and found it difficult to access support for mental health. TalktoTerry aims to remedy this gap, to be a compassionate ear and secure base for anyone in need.

Our state-of-the-art music facility enables voices to be heard, giving young people the opportunity to channel their curiosity, passion and energy, through creative activities designed to assist the development of their personal and creative abilities, whilst developing important social and life skills in a supportive, safe space.Our delivery is very collaborative. Joel Lees10 months ago The Artistic Youth Council aims to integrate young people into the local community and provide youth leadership experiences for young people – enabling them to access opportunities to enhance their ability to find employment. The results of the project are: 1. Young people gain the skills and knowledge to better equip them for work in the community. 2. We hope to positively contribute to the gradual reduction in the NEET statistics for Newham as a result of young people gaining valuable skills and experience. 3. Participants are more employable, having experienced a professional working environment, working on projects and have access to referees, all which can be included on their CV's. 4. Young people integrated into the community and connecting with community partners, other organisations, and other young people. 5. Young people finding their place in our community. In addition, participants will benefit from: *Tailored 1:1 quality mentoring. *Mental Health and wellbeing support. *Careers guidance. *Support to obtain qualifications in Maths, English, Digital Skills or Customer Service. *Employability support.Each member will receive shopping vouchers as an incentive. This is to compensate the young people for the time they give to supporting their peers and their community.

Awura Adjowa Nkrumah Mills10 months ago Safe & Seen by Sign Up Now CIC, is here to support Deaf and hard of hearing people in Newham, promote Deaf awareness and break down communication barriers. The project offers 10 free places on a British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 course, free BSL taster sessions, safety and wellbeing workshops and youth skills training. Our goal is simple: empower both Deaf and hearing communities, create new opportunities, and make Newham a safer, more inclusive place where everyone can connect and thrive.

Eva Szabo10 months ago Thrive-Fit Women is a free, resident-led fitness and wellbeing programme for women in Custom House. I have been running weekly sessions since October 2024, creating a safe and supportive space where local women can exercise, build confidence, and connect with each other. With People Powered Places funding, I want to expand the project into a structured 8-week programme running twice a week. Sessions will include strength, cardio, and mobility training, along with guest workshops on nutrition and wellbeing.We’ll kick things off with a community launch event in the park, and finish with a big celebration featuring a DJ, photographer, and certificates to recognise participants’ achievements. The project will provide equipment, cover guest speakers, and promote healthier living for women and their families. By voting for Thrive-Fit Women, you’ll be helping more women in Custom House get active, improve their wellbeing, and feel stronger together.

Freda Francis 10 months ago 'Seed to Stove' is a hands-on project designed to ignite a passion for growing and cooking in local young people, providing foundational skills for a new generation of farmers and chefs. It merges culinary skills with gardening, empowering the local youth within the community to grow their own ingredients and then use those ingredients to create dishes in the kitchen. 'Seed to Stove' focuses on sustainable cooking, seasonal ingredients, and culinary techniques, offering aspiring young chefs both a foundation in gardening and an opportunity to develop their cooking abilities.As young people progress further into the project, they will be presented with a unique opportunity to learn both culinary and gardening skills required to produce delicious, sustainable and nutritious meals. By teaching young people the full "Seed to Stove" journey, they will develop an appreciation for food and gain practical knowledge they can carry with them into their future careers as chefs and growers.The project will run for 10 weeks where each session will have a combination of both theory and practical aspects. Our first session starts off with an 'Introduction to the Chefs Garden' whether on a balcony or in a small patch young people will be able to learn how to create and look after their very own chef garden. From how our food grows, seasonal cooking, harvesting and plating right through to menu creation and planning. Each young person will be able to create a balanced menu and plan dishes that are not only nutritious and affordable however complement each other.Additionally to further engage local young people ,'Seed to Stove' will plan to include field trips to a local farm, guest chef demonstrations as well as a 'Graduation Feast' .Our 'Graduation Feast' will be a time to celebrate our young people's achievements over the 10 week project, also it will be an opportunity for them to celebrate with their family, friends and their community.My name is Freda a local chef, grower, and passionate advocate for empowering the next generation through food. With over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, both in operations and as a professional chef, I’ve dedicated my career to serving others in the kitchen and beyond.My roots in food run deep. Raised by a mother who was a caterer and a grandfather who was a farmer, I grew up understanding the powerful connection between food, family, and community. Today, I continue that legacy through my work at Grow Box on Vincent Street in Canning Town, where I lead gardening sessions for local residents and share my knowledge and love for growing food.Food has shaped my life in every way guiding my career and inspiring my mission to teach, mentor, and uplift the next generation. Eleona Wai 10 months ago What is The Orange Neighbourhood Project?The Orange Neighbourhood Project is a community-led wellbeing programme created by ONP London community-business to support women in Canning Town and Custom House. It is built around the idea that when women have safe spaces to connect, share, and grow, the whole community becomes stronger.At its heart, The Orange Neighbourhood Project is about reducing isolation and improving wellbeing. Too many women in our area face loneliness, poor mental health, and a lack of support networks. Some are new mothers without family help, others are elderly and overlooked, and many live with disabilities or long-term conditions such as diabetes. Our project recognises that these challenges are different and creates tailored opportunities for women to come together, build resilience, and feel included in their neighbourhood again.What We Are Offering Through The Orange NeighbourhoodIn 2026, The Orange Neighbourhood will deliver a diverse programme of 6 workshops and 2 events every quarter, carefully designed to meet the needs of women in Canning Town and Custom House. We are working closely with a local yoga studio in Canning Town as well as a team of highly trained and experienced instructors, facilitators, and healthcare professionals to ensure sessions are both safe and effective. This collaborative approach means women will benefit from professional guidance while feeling supported in a welcoming community setting. Mum & Baby Yoga (6-Week Course, Quarterly) - A safe and nurturing space for new mothers to connect with their babies while also supporting their own well-being. Sessions will introduce relaxation techniques that can soothe babies during distress, while also giving mums the chance to meet and bond with other mothers in the community. 25 - 65+ Women’s Wellness Course (6-Week Course, Quarterly) - A structured programme tailored for mature women — from those balancing work and family life to those who are retired. Across six weeks, participants will have the chance to slow down, prioritise self-care, and build lasting friendships. The course creates space for women to connect outside of work, strengthen their wellbeing, and reduce loneliness. Diabetes Specialist Workshop (Quarterly) - Led by a nurse or healthcare professional, these workshops address the specific challenges of living with diabetes, including diabetes burnout. Each quarter will focus on a different theme, such as nutrition (with meals shared in a supper club-style brunch), or women’s health and menstruation (paired with a tea circle for open conversation). Pilates Brunch (Quarterly) - An inclusive fitness session for women who want to try pilates but may not be able to afford regular classes. These brunches combine exercise with the opportunity to socialise and enjoy a healthy meal together, creating a supportive environment to explore new fitness habits. Wellness & Manifestation Brunch (Quarterly) - An intimate gathering with a wellness coach, where women can reflect, journal, and complete guided worksheets. These sessions focus on strengthening self-belief, validating lived experiences, and giving women the tools to set goals and manifest positive change. Walking Group Meet-Up (Quarterly) - A fun and energising 10k walk around E16, combined with coffee and conversation. This group promotes fitness while offering space for connection and peer support, helping women integrate exercise into their lifestyles in a social and supportive way. Our ApproachThe Orange Neighbourhood Project is not just about activities — it’s about building lasting networks of support. Women who attend are encouraged to form friendships, join WhatsApp support groups, and stay connected outside of sessions. Over time, this creates a ripple effect, where women begin to support one another, get involved in other community projects, and even go on to lead initiatives themselves.We also work closely with local businesses and community venues (such as Shakti Space, crafted corner, canning town library and supported accommodation services) to deliver activities. These partnerships mean we are embedded in the heart of the neighbourhood, making the project accessible, familiar, and rooted in local identity.Why It MattersCanning Town and Custom House are changing rapidly, and many women feel left behind by regeneration. The Orange Neighbourhood Project ensures women are included in this change, giving them spaces to feel heard, supported, and empowered. By strengthening women, we strengthen families, improve health outcomes, and create more connected communities across Newham.Our Journey So farBetween 2023 and 2025, ONP London has already laid strong foundations in Newham: Delivered the Orange Neighbourhood Project with Newham Council’s Neighbourhood Small Grants Programme (2023/24). Expanded with the E16 Orange Women Project, funded by the Aspers Good Causes Fund (2024/25). Built partnerships with local businesses such as Social Convention, Yapix, Shakti Space, and Rise and Climb. Hosted activities including Coffee & Chat sessions, Wellness Wednesdays, yoga classes, paint therapy, and walking groups. Created strong digital networks via WhatsApp and social media, providing ongoing peer support and engagement.

Elena Butterfield10 months ago I want to set up a travelling puppet theatre in Canning Town, performing a programme of seasonal puppet shows. The purpose of this work is both therapeutic and fun. The slow, gentle pace and the beautifully enchanting nature of the shows, leave space for the children to use their imaginations, breathe deeply and sink into the story. It's an antidote to today's fast-paced, jarring and unhealthy images which children are over exposed to on television, video games and Youtube. Ferried from breakfast club, to school to afternoon care and then placed in front of a television, with news of wars, economical crises and horrible crimes, puppetry is a calming and healing gift for children. We can help children by telling them stories that intentionally bring back a sense that all is well in the world. My vision is to work out of a quality tipi-style tent, moving around local green spaces performing puppet shows as I go. Part of the attraction of children stepping into a 'tipi-theatre' is the sense of enchantment, cosiness and an escape from the outside world. Being surrounded by nature aligns with the seasonal theme and brings the outside world in, grounding the child in nature.

Now I’m on a mission to change that for the next generation, starting right here in our community.Bunnie & Bee is a playful, character-led financial literacy programme designed for children aged 5–10. Through unique interactive workshops (learning through play), Financial family funday events, and an activity book packed with play money and real-life money challenges, kids learn how to spend, save, and make smart money choices — all while having fun.Each character reflects a different relationship with money, helping children relate or understand how personality and life circumstances shape our habits:🐰 Bunnie is confident, wise, and a natural saver.🐝 Bee is shy and curious, but often impulsive — always learning from mistakes.🎧 Buzz is flashy and spends to impress and be admired.💅 Bubbles comes from wealth, but is challenged to think beyond it.These characters spark important conversations around emotional spending, peer pressure, and smart decision-making — all in a safe, child-friendly way.The aim is to expand these fun workshops across schools, libraries, and community hubs in Custom House & Canning Town, offering joyful, practical money education that empowers children and strengthens families. I want Bunnie & Bee to become the trusted go-to programme where children — with their parents — can learn essential money skills together, while normalising conversations about money in the home.

Benjamin Adegoke10 months ago The Multifacture Makerspace Academy is a youth-led initiative based at Crafted Corner (Silvertown Way). The project will empower young people aged 16–25 by giving them hands-on access to fabrication tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines. It will provide training, mentoring, and opportunities to design and deliver their own workshops for the wider community.Over nine months, the programme will create at least 180 direct learning opportunities. Young people will progress from learners to leaders—gaining technical ability, teamwork, and confidence in presenting and teaching others. Alongside training, participants will work on community-led projects and commissioned collaborations, building practical experience that connects education to real-world applications.By reducing barriers to advanced equipment and providing a safe, supportive space, the project will foster creativity, enterprise, and employability. It will also create ripple effects through affordable public workshops, inspiring residents of all ages to learn new skills, repair and make items, and engage with a culture of innovation.Funding will ensure equitable access, cover materials and facilitation, and establish the makerspace with essential equipment. This project will strengthen community facilities, empower young people, and build long-term opportunities for enterprise and collaboration.

Adis Birhanu Girma10 months ago Hello,I am Adis and I would like to apply to run a project at Dost Centre for Young Refugees and Migrants, where I have attended for 3 years as a young person and where I now volunteer.We will use the funding towards the English Teacher and to buy food for Youth Club every week and to buy cooking ingredients to do regular, monthly cooking sessions.The funding will pay the rent for Shipman Youth Zone for a year as well as the cost of the English Teacher and all food over this time.We use the Shipman Youth Zone every Monday and run an English Class from 3.30pm - 5.45pm and then Youth Club from 6pm - 8pm.I have been attending Dost Centre since I was 16 years old and I am now 20 and I volunteer at Dost every Monday, as well as on trips and residentials, so I know how important it is for the young people who attend, to learn how to speak English and to have free, healthy food and to learn how to cook, as we have all come to the UK alone and we need to learn to communicate and to look after ourselves, in a safe, supportive and fun environment.I have lived in Newham since I arrived in the UK and study and live here and really enjoy giving back to the other young people who come to Dost and I also gain new skills whilst doing this.

Vanessa Boachie10 months ago Keep in Mind Movement: Newham 🎶🎨✨ Inside Out Wellbeing is bringing something fresh to Custom House and Canning Town, creating a safe and creative space for 13 to 24 year olds to relax, express themselves and feel good. Through weekly workshops, we mix art, music and movement to support mental health in a way that feels fun and real. Sessions include painting, journaling, dance, rhythm circles and group murals, all set to playlists chosen by the participants themselves. This is more than just activities. It is about creating confidence, friendships and a sense of pride. A smaller group will grow as Wellbeing Ambassadors, taking the lead, shaping sessions and motivating their peers. The impact will be a stronger and safer neighbourhood where young residents feel connected and supported, with the tools and confidence they need to navigate challenges and build successful futures.

Naser Mohamed10 months ago Active Futures Newham is designed to tackle very low physical activity levels and deep inequalities among young people in Newham, particularly in Canning Town and Custom House—areas ranked among the most deprived nationally under the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) and showing high Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) scoresWe will engage 9-14 year olds through five weekly sessions, each 1.5 hours long, combining: 1 hour of fun, inclusive physical activity (non-competitive, confidence building) 30 min of holistic support (homework help, 1:1 mentoring, personal development) Our project will directly engage around 75–100 young people each week.In addition to direct participants, the project will benefit: Parents and families (especially from low-income backgrounds) who gain safe, structured activity for their children and wider family support. Schools and local partners (e.g. Rokeby, Keir Hardie, Eastlea) who see improved engagement, healthier students, and stronger community links. The wider community through reduced anti-social behaviour, healthier lifestyles, and stronger local connections.

Jonny Boux10 months ago We want to bring Arc in the Park in Canning Town to life every weekend with free play, sport, family and wellbeing activities for local children, young people and families.From March 2026 to February 2027, our Arc Active Weekends programme will provide:Weekend activity clubs including cycling, football, basketball, dance, roller skating, parkour, fitness and more – ensuring there’s something for every age and ability.Family activity days with games, arts and crafts, heritage celebrations and seasonal events, helping families spend quality time together and meet new people.Growing and gardening sessions in Arc’s greenhouse and outdoor beds, giving children and families hands-on experiences of nature, healthy eating and sustainability.This project is especially for families who face barriers due to cost, poverty, SEND or isolation. By removing those barriers, we will make sure all children and families can take part, feel welcome and benefit from safe, inclusive opportunities.The project will help improve health and wellbeing, build confidence and skills, and strengthen community connections. King Ogunremi10 months ago Trim the Gap is the latest evolution of a grassroots movement led by King Ogunremi, a committed resident of Newham and founder of Barb N Engage Community Hub CIC. This initiative aims to provide meaningful training, mentorship, and employment for local young people through the barbering trade while actively steering them away from street crime and social exclusion.The journey began in 2023, when King Ogunremi received a £5,000 grant from the People Power Places and Royal Docks Team to launch The Barber Connect Project. This successful pilot engaged at-risk youth in Canning Town and Custom House, equipping them with barbering skills, life guidance, and mentorship from professionals. Following its success, a second £5,000 grant from the same funders was awarded in 2024, enabling the creation and expansion of the Barb N Engage initiative.In response to the overwhelming impact and demand, King Ogunremi formally registered Barb N Engage as a Community Interest Company (CIC) in 2024 to give the project structure, visibility, and scalability. Now, he is poised to expand this proven model by setting up a permanent professional barbering hub in Newham. To scale this initiative, Barb N Engage CIC is proposing a £20,000 grant that will be used to: Establish a fully equipped barbering training hub deliver free vocational training to young people in Newham. Provide guaranteed employment opportunities through a network of local barbershops. Offer ongoing mentorship and structured activities to reduce youth involvement in crime.Under the name “Trim the Gap: Empowering Youth Through Barbering”, this next phase builds directly on the success of the past two years. The project aims to close the gap between potential and opportunity by giving young people real-world skills, a sense of purpose, and a clear path into employment.Supported from its inception by People Power Places and the Royal Docks Team, Trim the Gap is ready to grow into a long-term solution to youth disconnection in Newham. Cutting not just hair, but cycles of poverty, exclusion, and crime.

Tim Polius10 months ago Kids Of Sport- Football Sessions is a free football programme for boys aged 11-15. The project will greatly benefit the community by providing a free, safe, and supportive space where young people can come together to enjoy physical activity and learn football skills on a weekly basis. By offering access to football without financial barriers, we ensure that all children, regardless of background, can participate in a fun environment that encourages teamwork and social interaction.At the end of the 12-week programme, participants will have learnt new football skills, improved fitness and developed greater confidence both on and off the pitch.

Parents are often told it’s “normal” for babies to wake constantly, or that they must either suffer through it or resort to methods that feel harsh or unnatural.This project fills a real gap in Newham—there’s support for feeding and mental health, but nothing focuses on sleep. The projectThis community-led project offers realistic, gentle sleep support for families with yound children. The funding will support the following work by a certified holistic sleep coach Pre- and post-natal workshops on sleep-related topics, including common sleep challenges and practical solutions —without compromising bonding. Five 1-on-1 sleep consultation for families with complex needs. Local WhatsApp community to enable parents to get timely advice that support better sleep for children and caregivers. We focus on the whole family’s wellbeing, because poor sleep doesn’t just make you tired—it affects your mental health, relationships, and sense of self.As one parent said:“It affected my ability to feel present as a mother and partner. I felt like I lost myself.”Another shared:“Lack of sleep gave me migraines. I couldn’t enjoy anything or even socialise.”Please vote to support local families who just need a bit of sleep and support. Together, we can create a stronger, more rested and connected community.

Faiza Ali10 months ago The Women-Only Badminton Project will benefit the community by providing a safe, inclusive space for women of all ages and backgrounds to participate in regular badminton sessions. Beyond improving fitness and skills, the project is about having fun, building confidence, and fostering a sense of community.We plan to run one social play session and one coaching session, coordinated by women for women. The coaching session led by a qualified female coach, offering participants the opportunity to develop their skills further and explore progression pathways.Our goal is for women to feel comfortable, supported, and confident on the court. We want every participant to feel welcomed, enjoy the social and physical benefits of the sessions, and, ideally, fall in love with the sport. By creating this dedicated space, we aim to encourage participation, nurture talent, and strengthen connections within the local community.

Where people who’ve lost their homes can get the individual support they need within a safe, caring community. This project will provide support for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity to improve their health and wellbeing.The individuals living with housing instability are often affected by mental health problems and marginalisation, and experience high levels of isolation. Your Place will provide trauma-informed support in casework, advocacy and specialist care to help people in Newham improve their mental health and wellbeing, build confidence and resilience. We will empower participants to imagine different futures and achieve positive long-term change in their lives. We will be running health and wellbeing groups on therapeutic support, creative activities and peer support recovery - which are designed to improve confidence, motivation and personal agency. Our wrap around dedicated support will offer holistic services to address barriers including addiction, anxiety and social isolation. The programme will engage with communities in Newham and local voluntary sector partners to support people to access the health support they need and develop more sustainable and independent lives. We’re investing in a healthier, more connected and inclusive Newham.

People Powered Places 8 months ago Youth Awareness, Confidence & Fitness ProgramThis project aims to empower young people in Canning Town through a unique combination of fitness, weightlifting, climbing, nutrition workshops, and mentoring. It will provide safe, structured, and positive activities for young residents aged 11–16 (with scope up to 21), helping them build both physical health and mental resilience.Newham is one of the most deprived boroughs in London, with high levels of childhood obesity and limited affordable opportunities for youth. Many families cannot access activities such as climbing or structured gym sessions due to financial barriers. This project will make those opportunities accessible and inclusive, giving young people a chance to thrive regardless of background.Participants will benefit from improved confidence, self-esteem, fitness, and life skills, while the wider community will benefit from more engaged, motivated, and healthier young people.By investing in local youth, this project will contribute to a stronger, safer, and more connected community, making Canning Town a better place to live for all residents.

Arnaud Mpeke10 months ago Home Start Hub is a pioneering social enterprise designed by care leavers, for care leavers. It will provide a welcoming, one-stop community shop where young people can access affordable, good-quality furniture, household essentials, and decor materials at symbolically low prices, as well as receive free paint and decorating resources. Beyond just providing items, the Hub will empower care leavers with practical guidance and hands-on skills to turn an empty property into a safe, comfortable home.The Hub will be run and managed by care-experienced young adults, creating pathways into paid employment, retail training, and leadership roles. This ensures the project is not only supporting care leavers as customers, but also developing them as future leaders, mentors, and changemakers.Why this matters: • Every year, thousands of care leavers step into independence without the family safety net most young people take for granted. Many are at high risk of social isolation, debt, or unstable housing. • Home Start Hub not only reduces financial pressures by making essentials affordable—it also builds skills, resilience, and community connections. • By empowering care leavers to design, manage, and run the project, we are fostering a cycle of leadership and self-reliance strengthening the wider care-experienced community.
