Custom House & Canning Town Community Neighbourhood is made up of 3 wards: Canning Town North, Canning Town South and Custom House.

Beckton and Royal Docks and Custom House and Canning Town received an additional £80,000 to share between the two neighbourhoods from ‘Create Your Docks’ community fund through the Royal Docks team.

Working group members and Council services are now looking at project applications and shortlisting the projects that match the priorities, the essential criteria, and are feasible within the timeline. Once the shortlisting phase is complete, projects that have been shortlisted will be taken forward to the voting phase which will start on Saturday 21 October.

Denise Evans-Barr3 years ago Project E.M.B.R.A.C.E. was chosen to:Encouraging people to connect.Motivation the community.Bringing people together.Resilience of the community.Accessible to all the community.Community love, for the area and it residents.Empowerment of all.This project will be broken down into several elements:Health and wellbeing with food empowerment.A group set up to discuss how we can improve our own eating habits with advice on healthy eating, this will cover cooking, food, and diet. To end the project with a small cookbook. Regular exercise sessions in the bookshop, with a monthly walk based on a scavenger hunt style to discover landmarks and wealth of artworks locally.Scrapbook project.Participants of all ages will capture special events/moments in spiral bound book to create a personal memory/story album, in fortnightly session.Craft with a cuppa.The bookshop will create and weekly craft session for adults, with a wide variety of crafting styles covered. Learning Buzz Zone.A learning space for all who are studying whatever age to do homework/assignments. Or learning about a topic from speaker from different work professionals.Encouraging the local community to come visit the bookshop, getting them excited about reading, learning, and sharing the new skills.

Sam Mason3 years ago We would like to apply for a £5,000 grant to pay for materials, marketing and refreshments for a year of social events for older people in Custom House.The activities, including digital inclusion, financial advice, social events, arts and crafts, and fitness classes, are supported by volunteers, informed by consultation with older people locally and attended by residents of the Ruscoe Road Sheltered Scheme and members of the local community.These activities will support older people locally to fight social isolation; research suggests that having close ties to friends and family, and participating in meaningful social activities, may help people maintain their thinking skills better in later life and slow down cognitive decline.This project will also support younger residents who are not in education, employment or training to develop critical skills, find purpose through volunteering and boost their confidence.Our financial support projects will help people to alleviate poverty, making the most of later life. It's harder to participate in things they enjoy doing, as well as essential needs such as food, heating and medicine, whilst a person is living in poverty. Poverty can also make it hard for seniors to participate in social activities because they cannot pay for entertainment and transportation.Our digital inclusion projects will support people to keep in touch with loved ones, stay safe online and up to date with local and national news. Our exercise classes will improve strength and balance, reducing the risk of injury from falls, while giving people more energy and reducing the risk of diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis.Learning new skills through our creative arts and crafts projects will support people to explore their creativity, reducing their risk of dementia and improving their ability to handle challenges.

Beth Martin3 years ago We’ll support a group of young people and their families to cook a tasty nutritious meal for our community twice a month. Young people will work with local professional chefs to learn about basic knife skills, health and nutrition, dietary requirements and allergies, different cuisines and how to plan, prepare and cook food for their community. People have told us time and again that there aren’t enough community spaces or opportunities for young people in Custom House and Canning Town. This is why we want to set up a Community Kitchen, run by local young people (12-18 years old), where neighbours of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy a meal together and get to know each other. The skills that young people learn will help them cook nutritious, tasty meals at the Community Kitchen and at home with their families, and even help them get a job in catering or hospitality. Young people will complete a Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate and receive a Community Cooks Handbook. A bit about our head chef: Christine specialises in West Indies cooking, and has been passionate about sharing her knowledge and skills with young people in Custom House and Canning Town for decades. Christine has always been active in our community - she cooked meals for families throughout the pandemic and she was the cook at the children’s centre at the River Christian Centre for over a decade! The Community Kitchen will run every two weeks at the River Christian Centre (E16 1LZ) starting in February 2024 - March 2025.

Rose Small3 years ago CH & CT WELLNESS STUDIO is a transformative health and wellness initiative centered in Plaistow, Newham. Spearheaded by the expertise of a medical doctor and a professional counselor, the project orchestrates a holistic approach to uplift the well-being of children (ages 12 to 18 years old) and women (18 years and above) within the Custom House and Canning Town community.At its core, the project comprises diverse fitness sessions tailored to cater to various fitness levels, including cardio, dance, strength training, and flexibility exercises. These sessions are coupled with interactive guided mindset workshops, fostering self-love, confidence, and motivation. Community participation encourages shared experiences and mutual support, fostering resilience and enhancing mental well-being.The initiative further extends its impact by facilitating monthly wellness workshops that delve into practical nutrition insights and health checks. These workshops not only empower participants with knowledge but also connect them with primary care providers when necessary, thus tangibly addressing mental health needs.Volunteer engagement is integral to the project's fabric, as local resident volunteers play a pivotal role in its execution. Their direct involvement reinforces the community's commitment to collective well-being and amplifies the sense of shared ownership.With its multifaceted offerings, CH & CT WELLNESS STUDIO has the potential to redefine Custom House and Canning Town Community and Newham at large. It envisions a space where individuals feel empowered to prioritize their health, mental wellness, and community connection. By addressing physical fitness, mental resilience, and social cohesion, the project strives to create a vibrant and supportive community ecosystem. Through this initiative, lives are transformed, relationships are nurtured, and the collective pursuit of health and happiness thrives.

Moira McVean3 years ago Despite the size of the borough, Newham only has 2 cinemas and both of those are in Stratford. The New Black Film Collective (TNBFC) wants to bring the cinema to you with the first edition of the Newham Community Film Festival! The New Black Film Collective (TNBFC) is a Black female-led organisation working in Newham for over a decade. It has a nationwide network of producers, educators and programmers of Black representation on screen. We exist to cultivate a vibrant Black ecosystem in UK film and TV by championing Black-led film production, distribution, exhibition and preserving Black filmmaking. We manage a number of ongoing projects to engage diverse communities.We are best known for delivering Black History Month at Stratford East Picturehouse since 2011 but we also run the popular Newham Community Cinema. TNBFC has a track record of delivering projects focused on social and racial justice. We have worked with marginalised communities such as the deaf/disabled, queer, faith and ethnically diverse populations e.g. African, Caribbean, South Asian and Eastern European.The Film Festival will celebrate our wonderful cultures, communities and local talent and will be designed for and with Newham residents of all ages. Alongside the international film programme we will provide a platform for local artists, performers, musicians and of course filmmakers. And most importantly, we will give local residents the opportunity to gain new and transferable skills through training and hands-on experience of how to create and deliver a film festival.The Newham Community Film Festival programme will have 3 strands: Black Cinema, highlighting films from African-Caribbean artists like All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White, Mami Wata, Goodbye Julia, Banel & Adama and Barrel Children. Asian Cinema, featuring films from South Asian filmmakers like Polite Society, Joyland and Sanaa, and films from South East Asian filmmakers like Joy Ride, Past Lives, Return to Seoul, In My Mother's Skin and Monster. Local Cinema, an opportunity for young filmmakers and event producers from East London to have their work exhibited on the big screen. We will work with local organisations to reach out to the next generation of local filmmakers and will provide training for young people interested in learning about event management and film exhibition. After the screenings, we will hold panel talks and Q&As with filmmakers, producers and Newham residents to learn more about the films and the filmmaking process. We will also invite local food and clothing companies to provide stalls at the venue, to create our unique and celebrated market atmosphere and will host afterparty events with music from local performers.Why do we want to do this?Because we love film and we want to share it with our fellow Newham residents! Film is the most accessible of all the art forms and we know the difference watching and sharing films can make to people’s lives. It’s the best form of escapism and the best way to travel round the world from your armchair. Film really can broaden our horizons and foster empathy and understanding. There isn’t enough representation of our communities seen on the big screens across London and we want to change that, for our people, in our neighbourhood. We want to tackle the loneliness and isolation experienced by people across the borough, particularly after Covid by bringing people together to enjoy film and to provide the opportunity to talk about the films that we’re sharing. We will involve all communities across all stages of the development of the festival so that it’s as relevant and engaging as it possibly can be.We will work with our fantastic venue partner Community Links (amongst others) in the ward of Custom House and Canning Town to bring the storytelling alive with music, food and artist performances. Given that Newham has one of the youngest populations across London, young people will also be a big focus for us. We have networks with Film London, the British Film Institute, young film collectives, schools and community groups across Newham. Offering training, volunteering and paid opportunities to young people to learn transferable skills to support future employability and thereby contribute to the local economy. Above all we want to have fun and collectively we have a huge amount of experience in delivering projects like this and can’t wait to get started!Thank you.

But what if we told you that there’s a brilliant way to solve this problem, which not only helps build a strong community, but also keeps you healthy and energetic? Yes, you guessed it right – it’s exercise!

tommy smith3 years ago The project is about improving physical and mental health of participants through weekly organised activities including football, rugby, dodgeball, gardening, creating positive mindset mural and participating in certified training courses. Furthermore, we plan to foster relationships within the community through activities to break down barriers between different age, social, ethnic, religious, sexuality and gender groups. Youth empowerment is also addressed as we are incorporating a youth led element to the project. These activities will enable young people to develop their future prospects by learning vital skills such as leadership, developing a community project and team work.

Naser Mohamed3 years ago Canning Town lacks a hub for indoor sports - it is expensive, inaccessible and not tailored to the needs of our community.We propose to develop a community sports hub for our area with particular focus on delivering organised opportunities to participate, learn and compete for our children, but also to develop recreational opportunities for adults.Futsal and Basketball will be our key sports that will form our delivery - which will involve opportunities for: Primary and secondary age children Girls only session Recreation opportunities for adults Our programme has been co-developed with families and young people from Newham - we are a trusted organisation working with schools and the wider community, led by resident for residents!

We aim to empower women by educating them on available services and encouraging them to seek help when needed.HEALTOGETHER CIC has consistently delivered reliable support services to the BAME community in East London since June 14th, 2020. Our non-profit organisation aims to address health inequalities caused by social, economic, and environmental factors. We provide advocacy, support, advice, and information to over 1,800 residents, with our home base conveniently located at the Community Links building.We work to improve mental health awareness and understanding in our community, breaking down stigma and promoting well-being.Our mission is to provide safe spaces to which our community may not have access, along with the language to express their experiences. By fostering confidence, self-esteem and offering structured pathways for seeking support, we cultivate a shared resilience and identity, leading to positive outcomes. Our clients can rely on us for assistance, companionship, support group activities, and referrals to other beneficial services.

Cheryl Noutch3 years ago River Church from Canning Town would like funding to establish and develop a community allotment garden with a refurbished caravan cafe. The aim would be to engage the local community, grow produce together, learn about "farm to fork" principles and build relationships.We hope to provide a green haven for all those living in the surrounding area of Canning Town where many tower blocks and redevelopments are being built.As well as this being a green haven, a portion of the allotment will be given over to growing produce for a food club, running basic cookery classes and developing an outdoor learning space for schools, pre-school and home school groups to come and learn about growing fruit and vegetables.Watch out for invitations to come and join us in this exciting project.

Raquel Moreira3 years ago Our proposed youth project opens up access for local young people to engage with football coaching , music lessons and to experience a diversity of social activities, these include planning and performing music events, parties where they perform what they have learned with other experienced musicians and celebrate with the wider community their achievements and also express their cultures through the different genres of music , together with the young people we will plan outings into places and events of interest to them (art expositions, museums , music performances etc) , we also aim to host regular youth nights where they can come and socialize, eat and play games. Since starting our activities in Canning Town in 2022 we are currently engaging with 30 children and young people and aim to increase our reach through the continuity and expansion of this project. We are applying for funding to secure the future of this initiatives and to give it scope for development.

It gives them the tools and power to build a more compassionate, more resilient and more united Youth Culture.How?The programme has two focuses: Improving young people's social emotional wellbeing and design and facilitation trainingThrough workshops, activities and games we equip young people to prepare for conflicts before they emerge, deescalate emotions in the midst of heated situations, and work together to process conflicts and solve problems as a team. These workshop focus on developing essential socio-emotional skills, such as emotional regulation, communication, empathy, and resilience.The design and facilitation aspect of the programme gives older young people (17-25) an accreditation in facilitation/Youth work/Consultants’ to then co- deliver sessions to other young people through youth justice, Youth clubs, Schools, Pupil Referral Units and other Alternative Provisions. They willDevelop their youth work skills as local community leaders and peer mentors. Learners will look at the benefits of community-focussed activities as well as planning and considering all of the practical elements involved in this.Why? To promote the emotional well-being and positive mental health of children and young people through 1:1 work and the implementation of evidenced based group interventions. Building young people's knowledge, skills, and confidence can create a ripple effect, empowering others and creating sustainable change. Young people have unique insights and experiences that can positively influence their peers' socio-emotional wellbeing and in the turn their community. Placing them as change makers will reshape and create a more compassionate, more united and resilient youth culture. Young people accessing this programme may have undiagnosed needs and associated levels of high risk, high harm behaviours and vulnerability and often find themselves in the justice system, secure, inpatient mental health and Looked after Children pathways.This accredited learning opportunity promote inclusivity, diversity, and a supportive space to grow. Impact1. Long-term Wellbeing: Through the implementation of evidenced based group interventions, children and young people experience sustained socio-emotional growth, positive mental health, leading to improved overall quality of life, relationships and future success.2. Peer Mentoring Culture: The program fosters a supportive culture of peer mentoring, where participants become mentors themselves, extending the positive impact to future generations. 3. An inclusive economy: By training young people and employing them, it enables them to participate meaningfully in society and the economy.4. Broader Community Impact: The program contributes to creating a more empathetic and mentally healthy community, where individuals value and prioritise socio-emotional wellbeing.

Stephanie Olowe3 years ago Free and accessible football sessions for the community!Football is so much more than just a sport! I have had the great pleasure of being part of an organization by the name of We Make Footballers. We Make Footballers has taken the UK by storm and continues to break ground by providing quality and affordable opportunities for boys and girls of all skill levels. 12 years running, 64 academies, including WMF Newham, launched and counting! From weekly training sessions, holiday camps, sponsored events and collaborations with major brands, and more, the opportunities provided by WMF have been invaluable for children and their parents. My experience in the football industry thus far has been priceless and I’d like to take my network, everything I have learned and am skilled and experienced to deliver to launch this community football project in Newham. Funding made available to be able to provide this to the community in Newham at no cost to them would be great! By opening up these opportunities and making them fully accessible by eradicating cost, who knows what talent may come out of Newham, but most importantly how many children, young people and their families can benefit from guaranteed social and health benefits!

Skye Pepier3 years ago Building a collaboration between New Way Row and Shipman Youth Zone, we plan to empower young people in the Canning Town South area to co-design, impliment and run activity spaces.The following is a summary of the proposals made by young people that we spoke to:* Pop-up playground storage unit - similar to this Dalston project:- http://www.gillettsquare.org.uk/event/pop-up-playground-2021-friday/2021-10-29/* Food give-away* Clothes give-away* Hub for homeless support/outreach - give-away spot for tents, sleeping bags as well as signposting etc.* Storage for 'sumo kit' and other items from the Trinity Centre (subject to clarification on their intended future).* Tuck-shop - potentially not viable but could be explored.* Climbing wall - potentially not viable due to size needed but could be explored.Other ideas that have also been suggested:* Bike fixing project* Recording studio (Partnering with Threads Radio)* Tech fixing space - Computers, Laptop, games consoles etc.The idea would be to repair and adapt derelict garages as part of a community project, after the young people of the Shipman Youth Club, currently based at the Trinity Centre, have worked with architects to co-design a feasible community project that potentially reflects the nature of the R-Urban space in Poplar, Tower Hamlets." Aspects of this project is subject to permission being granted for use of garages and installation of outdoor structures, if successful"

Vinicia Ferreira3 years ago YGNU wants to provide theoretical and practical tools . In the areas of mental health , special educational needs and anti-bullying to young people in primary school from ages 9-11 years old. Who are identified with complex needs , in need extra support and at risk of exclusion with the Young Generation Leaders Program using creative arts. At the end of the program we will display the young peoples art work in an art exhibition with the purpose to bring awareness , understanding of these important matters , start important conversations about how we can support and implement positive change. We also aim to provide parents interactive workshops in order for them to be better equipped with knowledge and tools for their children and build healthy relationships.

Clive Lyttle3 years ago Custom Voices Dance is a spoken word and dace project aimed at developing new partnerships with young people/ people within the Custom House and Canning Town Area. The project will work with a number of key artistic partners including, Custom House Books, Social Convention, East London Dance, Sonia Sabri, Ruff Sqwad, Southpaw Dance, Company Chameleon and Lyrix Organix to develop a programme of Dance and Spoken word and Dance for people within the area. The aim of the project will be to develop new work by local young people, develop skills in spoken word and dance and present performances in venues including Cundy Park, Royal Victoria Docks and Dockside Lawn with the final work being presented at Ensemble Festival 2024. The project will aim to work with young people in the area including refugee communities currently housed in the IBIS Hotel on Royal Victoria Docks Rd. The programme will take place form November 2023 to July 2024 and include workshops in dance and spoken word and performances aimed at the local community.

Raihana Hoque3 years ago Citizens Advice Newham, will address all the local priorities for Canning Town and Custom House which include: Health & Wellbeing, Inclusive Economy and Youth Empowerment.Over 60% of the clients we work with have a long term health condition, mental health issues or disability. When dealing with financial worries, especially with the current cost of living crisis, stress can impact and exacerbate poor health and affect wellbeing. Our service is largely reliant on volunteers, we encourage recruitment of local residents to provide training and learning for paid employment or better opportunities. This also feeds into empowering the youth to make a difference to the local community. However we also indirectly feed into youth empowerment by working with families to help ease their issues, to enable them to focus on opportunities towards youth empowerment, which they may be limited to when dealing with financial worries and other problems.We currently do not have a core advice service available for Newham residents so are proposing to offer a 1-day service for 12 months. The project will operate on a referral basis from councillors to enable better partnership working and create another pathway to access advice where appointments are prioritised for vulnerable clients needing urgent support. This project will specifically focus on those who are struggling with the impacts of the cost-of-living increase, prioritising those who are vulnerable and require urgent support quickly. More people are struggling to pay their energy bills, falling into debt and need more financial support and help with basic household essentials. As we provide holistic advice, we can additionally provide generalist and specialist advice in welfare benefits, debts, energy, employment and make internal referrals as required, highlighting our added value.This project will act as an additional resource and gateway to managing the growing need in the borough for legal advice as experienced by our organisation and other partners within the Newham advice partnership who we have also been supporting. Our previous research and client feedback has indicated that through our advice and support we contribute to better health and wellbeing outcomes. We can carry out complex casework where needed and working collaboratively with councillors will help improve community wellbeing. As we are based in the Canning Town and Custom house ward, we would like to trial this project in this area first and then expand into the borough. However if the need arises, we are flexible and can quickly expand on our reach and replicate service delivery given resources permit and adequate funds are available.We want to ensure that residents are not alone when dealing with their problems and help them find a way forward.

Venetia Cheetham3 years ago Community Outputs will be: 10 x Community Upskilling Workshops for ages 12+ (focusing on arts, sustainability & enterprise) A co-created community sustainability & greening project / event / artwork A new local arts & social action group / community Support for 5 x local under-represented artists aged 18+ to teach the arts & social action workshops. This includes: mentoring, masterclasses, studio space & bursaries. 5 local under-represented artists will be supported to design and deliver x 10 community workshops for ages 12+. The community will then use seed funding of £1,000 to create an event, project or structure that is focused on greening & environmental sustainability.We will weave mindfulness into the work, to enhance wellbeing & connection with others, whilst improving future career prospects by focusing on a fast-growing economy: sustainability.

Steffania Zoledowska3 years ago LOOOM - MIGRATING PERSPECTIVES project’s aim is to mediate the concept of immigration, often regarded as a taboo and charged with polarised perspectives. The direct experience of immigration is often disregarded and misunderstood, varying greatly based on personal circumstances and levels of privilege. LOOOM is meant to serve as a platform for sharing and deepening the understanding of those experiences, whilst strengthening the local community and a sense of belonging. This project will take place in the form of art workshops - music, poetry, painting, sculpture, and other media - led by local creatives and facilitators. Connecting to the theme through various senses will allow a more intuitive understanding. Moreover, two bigger, performance-based events will be organised in one of the performing arts venues of Newham with each one showcasing three interdisciplinary collaborations. For this, LOOOM COLLAB will be providing local underrepresented artists with mentoring, physical space, financial and technical support as well as a platform to showcase their work. Lastly, LOOOM COLLAB is dedicated to a development of a ‘free space’ - free of harassment and hostility where people can feel free to come as they are and move as they like.

The concept is to engage residents in a community food sharing digital hub. Though majority of its menus and some cooking classes will be online we will run 6 series of cooking class, over a 12 week period, at the Canning town library community neighborhood Centre. A further 2 weeks cooking courses through match funding at a local business sponsored at a local business.

Founded on the belief that knowledge is the key to breaking the barriers of poverty, we tirelessly strive to provide opportunities that transform underprivileged lives.Our project will be empowering the Community through a holistic initiative aimed at addressing the pressing challenges of low employability skills and socio-economic barriers in the Canning Town and Custom House neighbourhoods, where we are committed to creating a meaningful impact on the lives of the community.The project's core components include a series of employability classes covering critical topics such as resume building, interview techniques, and financial literacy, whilst addressing mental well-being challenges through neuro-linguistic programming and cognitive restructuring.The project aligns with local priorities of an inclusive economy, youth empowerment, and mental health and well-being. We aim to empower residents, break stereotypes, and contribute to a more stable, inclusive, and prosperous Canning Town and Custom House.Through comprehensive evaluation measures, we will demonstrate tangible and intangible benefits, ultimately showing the positive impact of empowering the Community through increased employment opportunities, positive wellbeing, and community cohesion.

The varied activities will enable the group to learn and achieve together, whilst making a positive difference in the community and other young people’s lives. At the same time, it helps “improve health, wellbeing and enabling them to stay safe, preventing them from hanging around on the streets, a pathway for young people to gain meaningful experiences, transferable skills, interact and connect with diverse groups in different surroundings”.As part of this journey, 'Xpand champions' volunteers will be rewarded for their time, dedication and achievements with an accreditation-award, participation certificate and a celebration and presentation event. 'Xpand Champions' volunteering project aims are:1. Volunteers will gain interpersonal, transferable, entrepreneurship, digital - IT and employability skills.As part of the volunteers development and outcomes, Shipman Youth Zone team will identify volunteers individual needs around employment and education, will support each individual with employability skills, progression routes, creating cv's and interview techniques by working with them on a one to one basis. Furthermore, Shipman staff will support Xpand Champions towards achieving certified/accredited courses and awards such as Duke of Edinburgh, level 2 customer service skills, and food and hygiene.2. Delivering community events - 'Tea & Dance', 'Tournament with prizes'. These activities will be organised by 'Xpand champion volunteers' hosting for the elderly and vulnerable community. 3. Co-product and work in partnership with existing and new partners, some we already had consultations with to explore ideas and resources e.g. - 'Canning Creative Cinema for film making',- We're ahead of the curve for entrepreneurship, - Custom House Library to connect with their elderly group during their coffee morning session
