Teah Sloan1 year ago Globe Rowing Club’s junior programme at Royal Albert Dock is transforming the lives of young people in Newham by offering them the chance to take part in an inspiring, healthy, and inclusive sport. Demand for rowing is growing rapidly, but a shortage of boats means we are forced to turn away local children who want to join. With your support, we can purchase two new double sculls—one for training and one for competition—so that more children aged 12–18 can experience the many benefits of rowing. This project will open the door for many more young people each year to get active, build confidence, and develop lifelong skills in a safe, supportive environment. Rowing helps children improve their physical and mental health, make new friends, and discover new opportunities, including scholarships and future careers. By voting for this project, you will help create a healthier, more connected community and give Newham’s young people the chance to thrive on and off the water.

Anonymous Participants1 year ago Football should be open to every child — but rising costs for facilities and coaching mean many families in Newham are being priced out of the game. Football Is For Everyone will change that by providing free and affordable football sessions led by FA-qualified coaches at Powerleague Newham. The project will run weekly training sessions during school term time until 2027, giving children the chance to enjoy regular physical activity, improve their football skills, and build confidence in a safe and supportive space. Playing football improves fitness, reduces stress, boosts self-esteem, and teaches teamwork and communication skills that benefit children far beyond the pitch. We will also deliver a summer holiday football camp, offering full days of fun, friendship and learning while giving parents affordable childcare during the long summer break. This project is about more than just football — it’s about creating opportunities for multiple children and families to be healthier, happier, and more connected as a community.

TakingBack YourPower1 year ago We all need to maintain a healthy weight to stay fit, active and healthy. Regular daily activity and exercise is an essential ingredient to this, whether you are overweight or underweight. However in today's world healthy eating and being active sometimes feels impossible to achieve. With ever increasing amounts of ultra processed food readily available. Fatigue from overwork. Stress from trying to meet our busy schedules. Financial demands along with rising food prices. Eating disorders and other health conditions. It's no wonder that managing our weight is not easy.By the time you realise you have piled on a few extra lbs OR your weight has dropped below one which would be considered healthy.Being at an unhealthy weight places strains on the body and if left unchecked will eventually lead to health problems, some of which are serious.Even those who have reached a healthy weight through lifestyle changes, dieting, weight loss surgery or weight loss medication will undoubtedly need support to maintain it.There is no magic answer but with support, simple achievable goal setting, hard work and determination there is hope. The “Healthy Weight Healthy You” project aims to help YOU Take Back Your Power and manage your weight by building a supportive community with sign posting to relevant health and community services, and free fitness and well being activities. When trying to maintain a healthy weight changes to your lifestyle are key. We will provide a range of FREE fitness and well being activities to help increase movement, mobility, self confidence and reduce anxiety and stress. The sessions will be a mixture of in person and online events ensuring they are accessible to everyone. The sessions will cover a range of different levels, abilities and activities enabling residents to find out which type of activity and exercise they enjoy most and find the most beneficial to their weight management journey. For those who are underweight and those losing weight prevention of muscle loss and rebuilding of muscle mass is essential and advice and exercises to support this will also be provided. For those wishing to lose weight we will fund payment of a membership and 6 week subscription to the Beckton Slimming World Group. This support group meets weekly every Monday. When you have reached your desired weight you become a lifetime member and can attend for free.We will further support by raising awareness of Eating Disorders with signposting for self referral to the NHS East London Disorders Eating Service. Helping to raise awareness for both residents and Beckton Health Care Professionals; currently the referral rate of Newham Residents to the service is the lowest of all of the London Boroughs it supports. The project and activities will be delivered by a range of people who have varied lived experience of being underweight, struggling with weight gain, weight loss, weight maintenance and eating disorders. We hope you like our project idea and will be able to vote for us.

Rheena Bones1 year ago We’re launching weekly 2-hour multisport sessions for young people aged 12–18 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Newham. Led by experienced coaches and mentors at the University of East London’s Sports Dock, the sessions will help young people improve fitness, confidence and social skills in a safe, supportive space. This project aims to reduce isolation, support mental wellbeing and help young people feel part of their community. Sessions are carefully designed so everyone can join in, make friends and progress at their own pace. We’ll also run a Family Engagement Day and a Celebration Event so parents and carers can connect, see the young people’s achievements and share feedback.By working closely with local schools, volunteers and SEND support services, we hope to reach those who would most benefit and help create a fairer, more inclusive Newham where every young person has the chance to thrive. We’d love your support and feedback to help make this project happen.

Herve Bessieres1 year ago Building Safer, Stronger Communities Through Active ConnectionAt the heart of The Foundry in the Community initiative lies a deep commitment to enhancing community safety, cohesion, and wellbeing. Through a vibrant mix of welcoming, social, and physical activities—including Nordic walking, dance classes, and other fun, inclusive sessions—the programme creates opportunities for residents to come together, connect, and thrive. These workshops and activities are powerful tools for fostering trust, mutual respect, and a genuine sense of belonging. Whether it's the rhythmic stride of a Nordic walk-through local parks, the joy of movement in a community dance class, or the connection shared during a group workshop , each moment contributes to breaking down social barriers and nurturing intergenerational engagement.Participants don’t just improve their physical health—they become active contributors to a culture of care. By building supportive networks and friendships, they help create resilient neighbourhoods where people look out for one another. These activities encourage dialogue, empathy, and collaboration, laying the foundation for safer, more inclusive communities.A transformative journey—one that empowers individuals, strengthens social bonds, and builds a legacy of wellbeing and unity.

Tangila Islam1 year ago Our project will engage local women and teenagers from Newham in fun, hands‑on workshop sessions where participants bring their own unwanted old duvets and pillows and transform them into creative home décor items, such as cushions, soft toys, pet beds, and pillows. By facilitating this community-led activity, we aim to embed circular economy practices, reducing textile waste and encouraging sustainable reuse at the grassroots level. Workshops will take place weekly over four sessions in selected local venues—e.g. community centres or libraries. Participants will receive guidance in sewing, stuffing, and design techniques, with opportunities for co‑creation and peer learning. This approach aligns with the People Powered Places ethos of resident‑led, locally relevant, inclusive projects that empower real change in neighbourhoods. Our intended outcomes are two‑fold: Environmental and social impact: divert bedding waste from disposal, promote awareness about the circular economy in everyday life, and foster community cohesion through creative collaboration. Research & business feasibility: as part of my doctoral research, this pilot will evaluate the feasibility of developing a sustainable social business model—a community Upcycle Studio where residents continue to bring post-consumer textile waste to repurpose beyond the pilot phase.

Jen Luk1 year ago Unleash your imagination and help bring our ‘Reimagine the Docks’ project to life!Together, we want to show how new buildings and local people can grow side by side, bringing changes in Beckton and the Royal Docks that help grow a stronger sense of community, develop more things to do together and enable your voice to have a real say in shaping the area for the future. We are the Institute of Imagination, an educational charity that believes that imagination is a vital tool for learning and a powerful catalyst for social change. We will work with local primary schools to co-design and run a series of events for all the family, where we want to set children's imaginations free to reimagine their neighbourhood and tell us what matters most to them and their families. We might help them to code robot street sweepers to clean up our streets or build models of their dream playground from junk materials! They'll get to work directly with developers and community leaders to co-design something brand new for our community. We will then create a toolkit to help other local organisations take on community led development so that this project will have a lasting legacy. We believe the people who live here should have a say in what gets built here.

Patrycja Skrzypkowska1 year ago Royal Wharf F.C. was founded in early 2021 with an ambition to create something special - a welcoming and inclusive club built on top-level coaching, where children could make lasting friendships, memories and skills for life. From the start it was about more than just football: bringing families together, connecting the community, and creating a space where the love of the game meets the love we all share for giving children and young people the best chance to thrive. This summer brought our toughest setback yet. We lost access to our only local training ground, and without secure pitches, community football cannot properly function. At the same time, rising costs make it harder to keep football sustainable while still providing the quality families deserve. This project is about rebuilding: securing pitches for the year ahead, putting the foundations in place so the Club can grow again on stronger, more stable ground.Since the beginning, provision for our older age groups has been stop–start and never sustainable, and that story has repeated itself again this summer. With this project we want to change that. For the 2026/27 season, alongside our younger squads, our goal is to enter our first 9v9 and 11v11 league teams - a milestone that will finally give teenagers meaningful, long-term football. Part of the funding would be allocated towards recognising and celebrating every child’s effort and commitment through end-of-season awards, including medals and trophies. Your vote will help us rebuild, secure the foundations we need, and create something lasting for the whole community.

Susan Hooper1 year ago Art For Fun aims to promote creative health in Beckton and Royal Docks, in response to the national demand for greater mental health provisions and the recognition that people in Newham have poorer health outcomes than the overall population. We believe we can play a role in supporting local health and wellbeing by exploring mindfulness through art in our 2026 programming, while providing more opportunities for community development, participation, and empowerment. We will plan a series of: • Artist-led workshops for group members that will be inspired by the principle of mindfulness, which is to bring non-judgemental awareness to our direct experiences with kindness and care and will be designed to: • Inspire the development of creative skills and confidence • Encourage social engagement and cross-cultural connection • Promote wellbeing by exploring self-care and mindfulness through art • Empowerment seminars for community members will educate community members on ways to bring more mindful art practices into their daily lives in support of their wellbeing. • Mindfulness training sessions for Art For Fun volunteers that will introduce them to the principles of mindfulness, how to incorporate them into facilitating art activities, and ways to support the group’s wellbeing as a volunteer.

Joanna Dong1 year ago This project will host year-long, 6 thematic events combining storytelling, communal meals, and cultural programming to document resident perspectives on regeneration and heritage, each event aligned with significant cultural celebrations such as Lunar New Year, International Women’s Day, Easter, Diwali, Halloween, Christmas, and Black History Month. These gatherings will centre around free or low-cost communal meals themed to the occasion, creating informal opportunities for residents to share personal stories and oral histories related to the Royal Docks. Each event will incorporate creative activities, such as collaborative art or storytelling workshops, designed to collect memories in an accessible and engaging way.A key output of the project will be a permanent digital archive. This online resource will preserve all collected stories, photographs, and recorded memories, making them freely accessible to residents, researchers, and future projects. Additionally, all recipes from the communal meals will be documented and shared digitally. This archive will serve as a legacy, enabling the community to explore their heritage remotely and providing a resource that can be used for self-guided learning at home or to inspire and inform future local events and initiatives. The project directly addresses a clearly identified need for creative community engagement in the Royal Docks. By teaming up with Marieta Evans, one of the founders of The Royal Docks History Club (active since 2017), we've gained access to a rich repository of historical content and a pre-existing network of engaged residents. This ensures our events are grounded in authentic local history. We will also be leveraging the audience and participants from FeastFest activities (since 2022), drawing on our proven track record in delivering community-focused cultural programming. Our partnerships with UCL have further highlighted a critical gap in accessible, creative historical projects. This initiative is specifically designed to bridge these gaps. It will combine rigorous historical research with an innovative, theatrical presentation to create memorable experiences that bring local history to life, while ensuring that the voices of the community are at the forefront of shaping future development.

L J Obadan1 year ago Imagine a space in Newham where families, individuals, and entire communities come together to move, laugh, and feel good—regardless of age, background, or experience. This is the vision behind Viral Dance Family Tutorials, a community-focused project inspired by the energy and impact of Move & Gospel—a local initiative known for helping people kickstart their fitness journeys through dance, accessible exercise classes, and a fun, music-filled atmosphere. You’ve probably seen people dancing online—laughing, moving, and having fun with the latest trending routines. With Viral Dance Family Tutorials, you’ll be able to learn those dances step by step, right here in your own community—and even better, you’ll get to share the experience and spend time together with friends, family, or neighbours. We envision a series of free, weekly dance sessions open to everyone—from mums with babies in slings looking for a moment of release, to city workers needing to unwind, to those who haven’t danced in years and miss the way it once made them feel. It’s also a space for families to come together, switch off from screens, and reconnect through joyful movement. Children are welcome—whether they dance or just hang out nearby—helping remove the barriers that often keep parents and carers from taking part. These sessions are designed to be fun, accessible, and inclusive, led by passionate local instructors (many of them parents themselves) and powered by gospel music, rhythm, and community spirit. Over 18 sessions, we aim to bring together 200–400 people, creating moments of joy, confidence, and connection.

Volunteers, trained in safeguarding and facilitation, will lead sessions and mentor new participants, ensuring the programme thrives long-term.Through partnerships with UEL, Newham Sixth Form College, Age UK, Housing21 , and ReSpace, The Creative Exchange will empower individuals, strengthen community bonds, and bring generations together. By sharing skills, stories, and experiences, the project transforms craft into a tool for connection, confidence, and community pride, making Newham a stronger, more vibrant place to live.
