Beckton and Royal Docks and Custom House and Canning Town will receive an additional £80,000 to share between the two neighbourhoods from ‘Create Your Docks’ community fund through the Royal Docks team.

Thank you for joining us to celebrate the achievements of all the projects in your neighbourhood. Your neighbours and local groups have been busy over the last year spending £200,000 to improve the area.

Joy-Caron Canter3 years ago project idea submitted on behalf of Mo & Tommy Parker! Over the tracks is a gardening project - mainly a growing project to produce edible plants, herbs, fruit and vegetables. We will encourage residents of all ages & backgrounds to get involved growing and harvesting from this new community garden space. People will be able to pick vegetables to take home as well as use them for community lunches and BBQs held in the garden. We will aim to teach people of all ages, including young people how to grow and harvest different types of fruit, vegetables and herbs that they would usually not have access to - or can be expensive. We will also build a new preserving station - to teach people how to make jams & preserves. Which they will also be able to take away with them. LBN have funding for capital works on the site. This funding would be specifically to run activities in the growing space.There will be at least 1 weekly session for children and 1 weekly session for adults

Brian Pittendrigh3 years ago We have to act! OUR POND IS DYING! For decades there has been inadequate maintenance with pond muck now up to 1meter+ thick, filling to within 9” of the surface. The pond stinks, bubbling evil smelling hydrogen sulphide gas and methane on anything approaching a warm day, and whenever disturbed by passing/diving waterfowl.The once plentiful NEWTS are NO LONGER SEEN ………..FROGS ARE GONE too……… DRAGONFLIES/DAMSELFLIES ALMOST NEVER SEEN ANY MORE. NO MORE DAPHNIA( a major aquatic animal food source). NO WATER PLANTS grow FROM THE BOTTOM UP any more. Bulrushes, Irises and willow that once grew in the water all dead. Most pond life has been seriously affected by the thick layer of anaerobic muck on the bottom. Plants that feed on excess organics will only grow on our small islands in the top clear water layer.Without maintenance the pond will turn into a marsh that will not sustain the remaining life formsThat’s why we have set up this group to obtain funding to work with the Green Spaces department and an ecologist, to dredge and clean the pond floor, and add oxygenating water plants, to restore health and an ecological balance. Please help us to do this. IT’S YOUR POND TOO.

Leonard James Aylwin 3 years ago This project aims to improve the soil conditions to promote growth of all sorts of vegetation in and around the ponds to improve the ecology. The natural terrain is completely hostile to the propagation of anything bar weeds, ivy, nettles and brambles.The soil cover is a thin layer (3 to 5cm) of made up topsoil (mostly from levelling of area post house building 35+ years ago) over 300+mm of compacted clay and flintstone, overlying natural clay. One large area now topsoiled/grassed is over clay atop 100mm concrete, over compacted stone. Everything we plant needs excavation of clay, stone, debris and replacement with good soil. For 4 years developing the area we have continually had problems with plants/grasses not flourishing due to inadequate finance to self fund sufficient soil improvement. This grant would enable us to markedly improve soil quality in flower beds, shrubberies and topdress grass. We would also like to add marginal plants to the water edge in line with the ecologist report commissioned by the council. Wildflower seed would enable extension of the modest area we currently plant. The project would be an aesthetic and ecological improvement to the whole space

Beckton Environmental Action Team ( BEAT3 years ago Beckton Environmental Action Team (BEAT) are a team of committed and passionate residents whose aim is to bring about positive change in Beckton by taking a proactive role in tackling environmental issues affecting the community.Are you:· Fed up with the constant fly tipping and littering ?· In total admiration for the residents Brian and Pam who have transformed Itchycoo Park and would like to support them ?· Interested in finding out more about how to protect Beckton’s wildlife?· Community spirited and would like to make new friends?If the answer to any of these questions is YES then please vote for our project whose focus will be to improve residents health and well-being and Beckton green spaces through a variety of FREE community engagement activities that will take place at various times throughout the year, to include:Itchycoo ParkEstablishment of a team of volunteers to help with community gardening and maintenance at Itchycoo Park.Nature and arts and crafts activities.Grow your own fruit and vegetable workshops.Littering and Fly tipping Schools engagement project on littering and fly tipping education to include a competition to design anti-littering and “Keep Beckton Tidy” posters or art signage.Production of winning posters or art signage will be produced for display in the community.Community Litter Picks / Litter Pick WalksWildlife Protection & EducationEducational activities on the effect littering and inappropriate feeding has on the environment and our wildlife.Establishment of a team of volunteers to look after and give regular, appropriate feeds to the waterfowl and birds at North Beckton Park.Community Events "Big Lunch" Event in June 2024 for all Beckton Residents which will showcase the project and encourage further community involvement.Rewards events/activities for Volunteers who have taken part in at least 25 volunteering sessions by July 2024.End of project celebration event December 2024 We are proposing this project in Beckton for the following reasons:· We are fed up with the constant fly tipping and littering and we would like to do something positive to support the work of LBN and help inform and engage residents to reduce this.· Residents Brian and Pam cannot continue to do all of the work maintaining Itchycoo Park on their own. If they stop maintaining the park it will quickly revert to its former swamp-like state. As a community we need to come together to support and ensure the continued existence of Itchycoo.· Following the recent fox abuse incidents in Beckton and a series of wildlife and waterfowl accidents and injuries caused by careless littering and irresponsible fishing we feel it is important to act to educate residents and park users about this and work together to protect and care for Beckton’s wildlife.We look forward to delivering a variety of activities that are accessible, fun, productive and beneficial for Beckton and it’s residents which will help bring the community together as a whole.

David Tinnion3 years ago The events of the last few years have been unprecedented and left many young people feeling isolated and anxious.We will deliver an after school rowing club running 3 sessions of 90 minutes each week with additional provision during school holidays.Young people will build strength, develop key life skills including team work and have the opportunity to connect with other young people in the community. Lead by a dedicated team of coaches, young people will see benefits that extend far beyond the water.

Christopher Mike3 years ago Art in The Docks makes access to art and culture free and easy to Newham residents. Since 2020 we have invited large numbers of local people to engage with their inner creative spirit. We have delivered numerous free to access workshops where people learn new skills and meet new friends. We worked with local families to make Newham's largest ever co-created artwork and helped an entire school to qualify for a Blue Peter badge. We listen to what you tell us, and you have told us you want more.Newham's Got Creative Talent will be a ongoing programme of community-oriented events and activities that actively engages people from widely different backgrounds and walks of life in the Royal Docks and Beckton areas. The programme will concentrate on COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND PARTICIPATION together with improved HEALTH AND WELLBEING outcomes. This will be delivered through collaborative activities aimed at families and individuals of all ages. The schedule will include creative ‘making of things' including sculpture, modelling, printing, design and painting. There will be performance based events where everyone can join in, likewise spoken word and drama workshops aimed at young adults. We will deliver an exhibition of artworks made by local people attending the various workshops through the year. This will showcase the range and depth of creative talent in the communityAs well as activities aimed at younger/ family audiences (which we will continue to offer) we will also target an older/adult audience. Our local communities have told us how much they would like to be able to make social connections in a place that is both safe and inclusive. We will provide this, at the same time giving people the opportunity to develop new skills and a chance to unlock their creative spirit. There is a wealth of unlocked creative talent in Newham. Sadly, the vast majority of this is never seen. Countless people work alone in their bedrooms on masterpieces that will never see the light of day. This is their chance to join in, be seen and heard, to share and develop their passion. These events will be open to everyone, from complete beginners all the way to Newham’s answer to Picasso.

Monica Hartnell3 years ago Our project aims to increase access to the outdoors using Forest School pedagogy and nature play, and to improve Beckton Park woodland by involving the local community in maintaining the site and protecting its wildlife.The project will include: Family Forest School & nature play sessions for local residents with children aged 0-8 years. Drop off Forest School for children aged 6-12 years including after school and holiday clubs for children in local primary schools and home educated children. Woodland Management- to ensure the wooded area is accessible and safe for the whole community! Nature Trails for all ages including a map to engage the wider local community with our local treasure, Beckton woodland. Curious by Nature is a grassroots organisation enabling families to access the outdoors and benefit from local green spaces.We work exclusively outdoors, in all seasons, delivering forest school, nature play and self-directed learning sessions to families with children aged 0-12 years old, including those with SEND and home educated children.We benefit our diverse local community by running sessions in Beckton Park woodland and local community gardens, as well as by organising park litter picks and community events.

Cheryl Noutch3 years ago Our project would like to engage the community of Silvertown, Thames Barrier and Royals Docks and wider Newham through public art events held in local parks, community centers and shared spaces and offering a wide variety of process art and creative learning sessions. After the success of Painting in the Park, Waymakers Kids would like to offer more free family events for pre-school, primary and youth age children working with local artists and teachers to develop art skills and explore process art. The work created at Painting in the Park would then be showcased at an art show celebrating the art of the local area. The project would also like to expand the range of classes Waymakers Kids already provides for families in the local area to include primary aged children and homeschooling groups. This would include more art skills session, music and story sessions, messy arts and creative learning.

Ade Ola3 years ago FOOD4ME is an intergenerational community Food project to get people of all ages to eat healthily, learn how to cook their meals and address health inequalities. It will bring together our diverse community members by sampling meals, and healthy cooking together by adapting current meal plans and making healthy swaps, exploring the history of food and culture in our community, tackling health issues caused by eating wrongly and adopting healthy lifestyles. It will include nutrition advice, health and wellness activities with a Food theme which will include the following:1- Arts and crafts with an Open Access Exhibition 2-Drumming, Music and Movement with an Interactive Performance 3- Diverse Cooking and Food taster sessions (learning together) 4- Community feast together event (Summer and Autumn)5- Cost of Living Crisis Support, How to shop/ grow essentials, signing up to receive Food Surplus Top-up supplies from our Food Pantry in Beckton if required.6- Mini Food4me Booklet creation on Diverse cultures and meals in our neighbourhood adapted healthily. 6-Access and Signposting to Support Services, Nutritionists and mental health practitioners, to showcase how food can affect mood and health.Please note each session will have support assistants available for those who require additional support.All activities will have a Fun, interactive inclusive model.

The project focuses on a holistic approach to improve their well-being and future prospects.Idea Details:1. Mentoring and Counseling: Trained mentors and counselors work closely with each child to address their various challenges, provide emotional support, and help them develop coping skills.2. Creative Workshops: Conduct regular workshops on arts, crafts, music, and dance to provide an outlet for self-expression and build self-esteem.3. Outdoor Adventures: Organize nature outings and adventure activities to foster teamwork, boost confidence, and expose children to new experiences.4. Varsha Srivastava3 years ago The NourishMyNeighbourhood project envisions a revitalized urban green space where the University of East London and community members come together to cultivate a shared green space along the Royal Docks waterfront. Considering the footfall in the Dockside area with residents and locals, we want to co-create this area into vibrant social space for people to sit, relax and feel connected to nature. Crucially, this project is specifically meant to address the needs of the community like green spaces, training, community engagements, wellbeing and so on. Hence, local involvement is critical. Phase 1 - Renewal and Renovation of existing Polytunnel and Garden Space into a Community Space by adding wheelchair-accessible paths, solar lights, adding more raised beds, and establishing a nursery or seed bank. Furthermore, provide free education and training workshops for residents around sustainability, plant care and wellbeing including co-organising events and festivals around sustainability.Phase 2- Expansion and co-creation of green spaces along the university property by the Royal Docks waterfront. Put planters, wild meadows, climbers, seating spaces, signage, insect hotels, water refill stations and other publicly accessible amenities.Both phases would include practical participation and collaboration with local charities/schools/community organisations, and arts enthusiasts, in design and delivery to boost skill development and civic engagement.

Emmanuel Kwami3 years ago project, based in the Beckton & Royal Docks area, is a football project for young females aged 12 - 18. This project is designed to improve the fitness and confidence of teenage girls through sport, whilst bringing women's football locally. After a great run from England's Lionesses, there is an opportunity for young females to be inspired by sport and the potential within themselves. This funding will help to provide football sessions for young people at a cost of nothing. The plan is to run free football sessions once or twice a week, with qualified coaches, good sporting facilities and professional training equipment. Alongside sport, we will undertake monthly mentoring workshops. This will provide a space for young females to feel comfortable and open up about any stresses they may be going through. Wether that be at home, at school, or within their social lives. We will then try and help these young people to develop a plan that'll support them. This project idea was designed and developed based upon the feedback from community members after running a similar project last year.

Rheena Bones3 years ago NASSA will run sport sessions 4 times a week to engage young people from BME communities. This will give young people the opportunity to learn skills and have fun at the same time in a safe environment. The sessions also allow young people to socialise and make new friends from their area/ other areas in the borough. CABNAB is an education programme alerting young people to the dangers of knife crime. The education element is fitted into the sports sessions, many times through question and answer sessions. It has the full backing of the Metropolitan Police and reaches over 2,000 children and young people in Newham each year. CABNAB is about giving young people opportunities, creating role models and developing future leaders. CABNAB aims to engage young people, allowing them to participate in a sport that helps them to develop both physically and socially. CABNAB encourages the youth of today from the ages of 8 upwards to be team players and play competitively, whilst learning from NASSA coaches and the Metropolitan Police about the grim statistics and consequences of knife crime. In addition we will offer UK, CC recognised qualifications to 50 young people. NASSA requires support through funding for the following: Facility hire, coaching qualifications, volunteers, CABNAB sessions, workshops, lead sports coach, assistant sports coach, tournaments and rewards.

Harry Parkyn3 years ago We are proud to provide excellent sports facilities and youth services, but we can do more. We have always promoted the life-changing benefits of boxing and martial arts for young people, but we also recognise the potential barriers that young people may have to engage in combat sports; for instance, if it is something that does not interest them. We want to transform our Academy into an inclusive, multipurpose, bustling space designed by and for young people, with the aim of creating an Academy that is the 'place to be' for all young people in our local community in 2024 and beyond. Through the vision of our young people, "Operation Peace Hub" will focus on transforming two areas of the Academy. Our central hub is your first port of call at the Academy, and is typically seen as a 'waiting room' where young people prepare for their sessions. Our peace garden is a tranquil outdoor area accessed through doors at the back of the hub. Both spaces are not considered by our young people as places they would want to use in their current forms. The hub lacks a 'youth centre atmosphere', with tables and chairs taking up most of the room, and the peace garden has no furniture or greenery to warrant hanging out there. "Operation Peace Hub" will transform these areas, providing young people with their own space to use throughout the week under the supervision of trusted youth workers and mentors.For young people who would otherwise be uninterested in our services, they will engage with Fight for Peace for the first time. For existing members, they will have a space which is their own in a transformed, yet familiar setting. For all young people, they will be able to form and build relationships with peers and trusted adult role models. For the parents and guardians of our young people, they will take comfort in knowing their children can utilise a free, safe youth space after school under the supervision of experienced, qualified youth workers and mentors. For the wider community, this transformed space will allow Fight for Peace to host community events, where Newham residents can witness the impact "Operation Peace Hub" has had and will continue to have on 1,000 young people each year.

Susan Hooper3 years ago For this project, Art for fun aim to approach different ethnic/religious groups, with the aim of facilitating cross cultural exchanges and promoting a greater understanding of each other among diverse groups within the community of Beckton & RD. The aim is to improve community relationships and draw people together. Every couple of months, we will engage with a different community group, through the medium of art.We will invite different ethnic/religious groups to join us on an adhoc basis as well as organise workshops to explore each others culture to which everyone is welcomeWe will invite artists from relevant cultures to run specific skills workshops either during Art for Fun sessions, or at times convenient to the other groups. We will look at relevant imagery and create cards, decorations and art pieces that celebrate and explore cultural issues. The project will end with an exhibition which will celebrate the work that’s been created, sharing it with the local community and more widely. We will promote this through St Marks, Beckton Globe, local partners and social media. It will give participants a sense of achievement and feeling of value for their work, boost self-esteem and enhance social interaction.

Yakub Ali3 years ago Beckton Community Projects is a community organisation which was set up to create and deliver immediate benefits to the local residents of Beckton. BCP's main aims are to re-establish community spirit, improve the standards of living for as many residents within the area and ultimately empower the people of Beckton to fulfil their potential. We play an active effort in targeting mindful and physical wellbeing as well as improving outdoor spaces. All our projects are either free to users or heavily subsidised by Beckton Community Projects.
