Anyone who lives, learns or works in the Community Neighbourhood of Beckton & Royal Docks can vote for their 10 favourite projects.

Make sure you vote for 10 projects before submitting your vote. You can modify your vote until 12 November at 8pm when the voting phase closes. There are 49 proposals to choose from in Beckton & Royal Docks. They have been shortlisted by your working group. Now, it's your time to vote!

You can only vote in your Community Neighbourhood, and you can only vote once. Make sure you indicate a valid postcode and door number from the Community Neighbourhood area when you vote.

Joy-Caron Canter3 years ago project idea submitted on behalf of Mo & Tommy Parker! Over the tracks is a gardening project - mainly a growing project to produce edible plants, herbs, fruit and vegetables. We will encourage residents of all ages & backgrounds to get involved growing and harvesting from this new community garden space. People will be able to pick vegetables to take home as well as use them for community lunches and BBQs held in the garden. We will aim to teach people of all ages, including young people how to grow and harvest different types of fruit, vegetables and herbs that they would usually not have access to - or can be expensive. We will also build a new preserving station - to teach people how to make jams & preserves. Which they will also be able to take away with them. LBN have funding for capital works on the site. This funding would be specifically to run activities in the growing space.There will be at least 1 weekly session for children and 1 weekly session for adults

Brian Pittendrigh3 years ago We have to act! OUR POND IS DYING! For decades there has been inadequate maintenance with pond muck now up to 1meter+ thick, filling to within 9” of the surface. The pond stinks, bubbling evil smelling hydrogen sulphide gas and methane on anything approaching a warm day, and whenever disturbed by passing/diving waterfowl.The once plentiful NEWTS are NO LONGER SEEN ………..FROGS ARE GONE too……… DRAGONFLIES/DAMSELFLIES ALMOST NEVER SEEN ANY MORE. NO MORE DAPHNIA( a major aquatic animal food source). NO WATER PLANTS grow FROM THE BOTTOM UP any more. Bulrushes, Irises and willow that once grew in the water all dead. Most pond life has been seriously affected by the thick layer of anaerobic muck on the bottom. Plants that feed on excess organics will only grow on our small islands in the top clear water layer.Without maintenance the pond will turn into a marsh that will not sustain the remaining life formsThat’s why we have set up this group to obtain funding to work with the Green Spaces department and an ecologist, to dredge and clean the pond floor, and add oxygenating water plants, to restore health and an ecological balance. Please help us to do this. IT’S YOUR POND TOO.

Leonard James Aylwin 3 years ago This project aims to improve the soil conditions to promote growth of all sorts of vegetation in and around the ponds to improve the ecology. The natural terrain is completely hostile to the propagation of anything bar weeds, ivy, nettles and brambles.The soil cover is a thin layer (3 to 5cm) of made up topsoil (mostly from levelling of area post house building 35+ years ago) over 300+mm of compacted clay and flintstone, overlying natural clay. One large area now topsoiled/grassed is over clay atop 100mm concrete, over compacted stone. Everything we plant needs excavation of clay, stone, debris and replacement with good soil. For 4 years developing the area we have continually had problems with plants/grasses not flourishing due to inadequate finance to self fund sufficient soil improvement. This grant would enable us to markedly improve soil quality in flower beds, shrubberies and topdress grass. We would also like to add marginal plants to the water edge in line with the ecologist report commissioned by the council. Wildflower seed would enable extension of the modest area we currently plant. The project would be an aesthetic and ecological improvement to the whole space

Beckton Environmental Action Team ( BEAT3 years ago Beckton Environmental Action Team (BEAT) are a team of committed and passionate residents whose aim is to bring about positive change in Beckton by taking a proactive role in tackling environmental issues affecting the community.Are you:· Fed up with the constant fly tipping and littering ?· In total admiration for the residents Brian and Pam who have transformed Itchycoo Park and would like to support them ?· Interested in finding out more about how to protect Beckton’s wildlife?· Community spirited and would like to make new friends?If the answer to any of these questions is YES then please vote for our project whose focus will be to improve residents health and well-being and Beckton green spaces through a variety of FREE community engagement activities that will take place at various times throughout the year, to include:Itchycoo ParkEstablishment of a team of volunteers to help with community gardening and maintenance at Itchycoo Park.Nature and arts and crafts activities.Grow your own fruit and vegetable workshops.Littering and Fly tipping Schools engagement project on littering and fly tipping education to include a competition to design anti-littering and “Keep Beckton Tidy” posters or art signage.Production of winning posters or art signage will be produced for display in the community.Community Litter Picks / Litter Pick WalksWildlife Protection & EducationEducational activities on the effect littering and inappropriate feeding has on the environment and our wildlife.Establishment of a team of volunteers to look after and give regular, appropriate feeds to the waterfowl and birds at North Beckton Park.Community Events "Big Lunch" Event in June 2024 for all Beckton Residents which will showcase the project and encourage further community involvement.Rewards events/activities for Volunteers who have taken part in at least 25 volunteering sessions by July 2024.End of project celebration event December 2024 We are proposing this project in Beckton for the following reasons:· We are fed up with the constant fly tipping and littering and we would like to do something positive to support the work of LBN and help inform and engage residents to reduce this.· Residents Brian and Pam cannot continue to do all of the work maintaining Itchycoo Park on their own. If they stop maintaining the park it will quickly revert to its former swamp-like state. As a community we need to come together to support and ensure the continued existence of Itchycoo.· Following the recent fox abuse incidents in Beckton and a series of wildlife and waterfowl accidents and injuries caused by careless littering and irresponsible fishing we feel it is important to act to educate residents and park users about this and work together to protect and care for Beckton’s wildlife.We look forward to delivering a variety of activities that are accessible, fun, productive and beneficial for Beckton and it’s residents which will help bring the community together as a whole.

It seeks to establish an innovative and inclusive Studio space paired with a customized app / Magazine, bridging the gap for young talents in architecture, computing, engineering, and science.

David Tinnion3 years ago The events of the last few years have been unprecedented and left many young people feeling isolated and anxious.We will deliver an after school rowing club running 3 sessions of 90 minutes each week with additional provision during school holidays.Young people will build strength, develop key life skills including team work and have the opportunity to connect with other young people in the community. Lead by a dedicated team of coaches, young people will see benefits that extend far beyond the water.

Mark Kass3 years ago We all love music and at the heart of pretty much all modern, popular music therein lies "jazz".With Newham hosting the most diverse population in London and the Royal Docks representing the heritage and now contemporary significance of London's growing international influence, London East Jazz Network CIC are excited to present Jazz East's INCLUSION FUSION FESTIVAL: Jazz from its roots to right now!"JAZZ INCLUSION FUSION FESTIVAL" is an free entry, inclusive and we anticipate, a sustainable winter festival of the art, culture, heritage, fashion and music that will bring together local residents, business people and local community groups across the Royal Docks to share the story of the worlds jazz music in the UK in all its forms.Taking jazz right back to its origins means going right back to Africa and we will present the story of jazz from its African roots before it centred on New Orleans.We'll tell the influence the jazz story has had on UK music, dance, art and heritage of the influence jazz over the last 100+ years, its transformation post-Windrush, beyond the Beatles and right through to contemporary sound of todays afrobeat and cross over sounds.We'll source musicians locally, working closely with schools, colleges, universities across Newham to identify local heritage stories and local talent that can translate these stories into a series of arts and cultural activities that will change perceptions of this incredible genre.We'll work closely with local Volunteer Centres and the incredibly diverse local community groups of Newham to engage all ages and abilities irrespective of background, heritage and culture. We will encourage young people to use this volunteering opportunity to boost employability skills and give a taste of the in-demand music business and of course become active participants in their own local communities.Jazz East's INCLUSION FUSION FESTIVAL will endeavour to adopt the Royal Docks as a multi-stage festival site which will strengthens the heritage story of the docks. Each indoor "stage" will adopt a unique theme based on its location to showcase the heritage of the site with a defined style of jazz and venue specific marketing.We will engage local businesses to support Jazz East's INCLUSION FUSION FESTIVAL through their own community investment and working closely with the Newham Chamber of Commerce and the Newham Music Education Hub, their local supply chains.We will endeavour to garner support from the Mayor of London to showcase opportunity in Newham and the Royal Docks, and highlight the inclusivity, diversity and relevance this music offers to help tell this story to the world...that regeneration isn't just new places to live; it's about art, culture, innovation and bringing communities together.Jazz has done it in the past and Jazz East's INCLUSION FUSION FESTIVAL will bring people together long into the future!

Since 2020 we have invited large numbers of local people to engage with their inner creative spirit. We have delivered numerous free to access workshops where people learn new skills and meet new friends. We worked with local families to make Newham's largest ever co-created artwork and helped an entire school to qualify for a Blue Peter badge. We listen to what you tell us, and you have told us you want more.Newham's Got Creative Talent will be a ongoing programme of community-oriented events and activities that actively engages people from widely different backgrounds and walks of life in the Royal Docks and Beckton areas. The programme will concentrate on COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND PARTICIPATION together with improved HEALTH AND WELLBEING outcomes. This will be delivered through collaborative activities aimed at families and individuals of all ages. The schedule will include creative ‘making of things' including sculpture, modelling, printing, design and painting. There will be performance based events where everyone can join in, likewise spoken word and drama workshops aimed at young adults. We will deliver an exhibition of artworks made by local people attending the various workshops through the year. This will showcase the range and depth of creative talent in the communityAs well as activities aimed at younger/ family audiences (which we will continue to offer) we will also target an older/adult audience. Our local communities have told us how much they would like to be able to make social connections in a place that is both safe and inclusive. We will provide this, at the same time giving people the opportunity to develop new skills and a chance to unlock their creative spirit. There is a wealth of unlocked creative talent in Newham. Sadly, the vast majority of this is never seen. Countless people work alone in their bedrooms on masterpieces that will never see the light of day. This is their chance to join in, be seen and heard, to share and develop their passion. These events will be open to everyone, from complete beginners all the way to Newham’s answer to Picasso.

Monica Hartnell3 years ago Our project aims to increase access to the outdoors using Forest School pedagogy and nature play, and to improve Beckton Park woodland by involving the local community in maintaining the site and protecting its wildlife.The project will include: Family Forest School & nature play sessions for local residents with children aged 0-8 years. Drop off Forest School for children aged 6-12 years including after school and holiday clubs for children in local primary schools and home educated children. Woodland Management- to ensure the wooded area is accessible and safe for the whole community! Nature Trails for all ages including a map to engage the wider local community with our local treasure, Beckton woodland. Curious by Nature is a grassroots organisation enabling families to access the outdoors and benefit from local green spaces.We work exclusively outdoors, in all seasons, delivering forest school, nature play and self-directed learning sessions to families with children aged 0-12 years old, including those with SEND and home educated children.We benefit our diverse local community by running sessions in Beckton Park woodland and local community gardens, as well as by organising park litter picks and community events.

Grace Ellyone3 years ago Some minority in our society will be living in exclusion isolation metal health language barrier if the gaps are not breached as the digital age is advancing.I believe that the increasing factor of the above within the hearing impaired community including their family can be minimised.In order to achieve this milestone we will collaborate with partners such as CBF academy, NOCN, NCFE etc to deliver a bespoke vocational program to educate, inform, engage, raise awareness, learn, etc new digital age technology using software tools, providing them a head start into computing programming.At the end of the program we aim to provide a certificate of attendance and an awarding day to celebrate milestones achieved.

Cheryl Noutch3 years ago Our project would like to engage the community of Silvertown, Thames Barrier and Royals Docks and wider Newham through public art events held in local parks, community centers and shared spaces and offering a wide variety of process art and creative learning sessions. After the success of Painting in the Park, Waymakers Kids would like to offer more free family events for pre-school, primary and youth age children working with local artists and teachers to develop art skills and explore process art. The work created at Painting in the Park would then be showcased at an art show celebrating the art of the local area. The project would also like to expand the range of classes Waymakers Kids already provides for families in the local area to include primary aged children and homeschooling groups. This would include more art skills session, music and story sessions, messy arts and creative learning.

Mavis Wenham3 years ago This project will gather, purchase and sort wonky, slightly damaged, 'ugly', misshaped fruit and vegetables from community food outlets, supermarkets, farms and other distributers and suppliers and use these to produce simple, inexpensive, nutritious, appetising snacks and meals. Children and young people (CYP) 5+ will do this, assisted by their parent/caregivers and qualified sessional staff. Parents will assist to create an international foods menu and the CYP will receive appropriate nutritional awareness; health & safety advice related to food handling and cooking skills, to then do the preparation and cooking and serve this to their families. They will work together on budgeting and financial management, as well as entrepreneurial and business skills and consider by the end of the programme whether to set up a café style service or product offer to the public. This project is about addressing isolation and loneliness by creating a programme which enables social connectivity and community cohesion. It encourages CYP and adults to work together to create their service. The project seeks to address health and wellbeing development within families by focusing on use of fruits and vegetables as a main and healthier meal inclusion. It addresses environmental challenges as it is focused on tackling food waste through use of foods that would otherwise not be used to this extent. It provides cross-borough use of spaces for the whole Newham Community. The funding would enable us to hire space; purchase the food, materials and equipment and allow us to bring in tutors, health practitioners and catering staff, sessional project workers and volunteers, to deliver the programme. It would mean that we can create publicity and promote this idea and allows us to be supported by researchers to capture the data and report on the outcomes.

Farah Mohammoud3 years ago You Press, a social enterprise founded in Newham in 2011, empowers young people from underrepresented communities to help them realise their potential. We know from lived experience how difficult it is to enter the creative industries. The Truth on the Roof project will help young people feel more positive about their future, life in Beckton, and overcoming the pandemic and rising living costs. Previous Truth on the Roof projects have shown the impact. We refined the project model during 2021-23 when we filmed, edited, and published poetry and music by young people. Promoting confidence, sociability, decision-making, and communication skills of young people from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds.In 2024, over a 12-month period, we will work with a range of young people living and working in Beckton & Royal Docks. This will also local residents from minority backgrounds and underrepresented groups.The project will explore themes important to the participants e.g., loneliness, Isolation, and freedom of expression. We will provide a safe space for young people to express themselves creatively, which will have a positive effect on their physical and mental well-being. The reflective artwork that will be produced during the project will also have a positive effect on the community, this is because it will enable and inspire our young people and diverse communities to explore a new career in the creative industry. Natalya Fisher3 years ago This is a club supporting people who have a earning and/or physical disability and is intersectional. The group's plan is to extend our social reach and reduce social isolation and loneliness for this community. The project intends to enable individuals to experience different activities and provides a variety of opportunities for these people to broaden their horizons and learn new skills. By learning new skills for example, it fosters a sense of achievement in addition to helping others discover a new-found confidence in themselves and to flourish in their communities and improve their overall wellbeing.This intends to break down barriers that these people face and help them to belong in their communities. This will also improve mental health outcomes for individuals. From this, it will make Newham a better place to live for people with Learning Disabilities by creating a more supportive and inclusive community for these residents to live in and hopefully flourish.The project will be delivered by the facilitators among the staff of Beckton Globe Library at the present time and will help and support with the delivery of these sessions.This has been posted on behalf of members from the Friendship Club sessions.

Matt Ponting3 years ago Set of nature and heritage guided walks around Beckton and subsequent creation of a Beckton-themed co-produced community zine publication (printed at Newham-based Rabbits Road Press). In each walk the participants will have sketchbooks, to record their stories, and the area's history through discussions, notes and sketches. There will be 4 walks in total.Some of the topics could be:- Will Thorne with discussion about his national relevance- Stanley Kubrick in Beckton with locations from "Full Metal Jacket" film- The story of Simon Adams Beck, and the buildings around the gasworks (and railway line)- The Beckton Marshes and East Ham level: Exploring the nature of the marches and current nature- Building Beckton park: The history and background to the 1980s district park as well as the much older New Beckton Park- The Gallions railway: Follow the old railway path along the docks, and looking at the Vipers and Wagstaff designed buildings.The topics will be voted on via online survey and at the event, and new themes chosen by participants will be encouraged.The aim will be to create a publication which will be a record of the history and the community that is in Beckton, and to be listed in the British Library, with an ISSN number to keep it on record. The words and images will be a combination of the participants and experts, along with selected interviews.

Anonymous Participants3 years ago We have 800 members but we are aware that their are many more carers out there in Newham who are unaware of our group and the benefits that we offer. These include the chance to meet with other SEND carers, learning and supporting one another, whilst also being able to access a range of information, workshops, coffee mornings, conferences and fun family activities.We also act as a platform for carers to share their views and experiences about the services they receive and we use this feedback to work in partnership with the local authority, Health and other key partners to make sure that the services and provision that is offered to SEND families meet their needs and give the very best opportunities to our SEND children and young people.That said we would like to reach out to more Newham SEND carers and to attract new members to our forum we would like to offer the following:* Fun day for SEND families with specialist SEND activities and programmes. * Pampering sessions as a way to attract new carers by offering some 'ME TIME' . * We would like to offer 'Short Breaks' to new and existing members. This would allow carers who are on call 24/7 to get away with other SEND parents on a day of fun, relaxation and enjoyment, allowing them to charge their batteries for their caring responsibilities. Theatre, Theme Parks, Seaside visits would all be on offer.* We would also like to offer visits to the coast and other attraction with a lovely lunch. Some carers are so busy with their caring roles that they have never had the opportunity to visit and enjoy the attractions of their local area and further afield. Ago this would offer some much need respite to carers - some of whom are stressed and worn out.

Dawn Kenworthy3 years ago Men and women talk differently and about different subjects and therefore, need their own safe space to share. People are typically more comfortable sharing whilst slightly distracted, by another activity, especially creative ones. Topics that come up regularly in conversation is relationships, menopause, confidence, caring roles, cancer, careers and what to do when the children are grown up and you feel you have lost your ifentity (who am I now?). Women's health needs tend to increase with age but so does social isolation. Where to meet like minded people? How to connect to your local community? How to build social networks that are meaningful and lead to enjoying others' company. This project around art will be driven by the women who attend, empowering them to express themselves. Mood boards for example are very helpful visual art aids, they help with rediscovering yourself and how to get there. Activities are NOT for 'artists' as art is very subjective and everyone can create given the right platform.

We collaborate with a local secondary school to engage students in hands-on glassblowing workshops, sparking creativity and environmental awareness.The project involves creating recycled glass installations that enhance our public spaces, making them more visually appealing and ecologically responsible. These installations, including vibrant glass planters and artistic pieces, will not only brighten our neighborhood but also serve as educational tools to raise awareness about glass recycling.Our goal is to unite the community through open studio visits, workshops, and interactive events, fostering connections and promoting a sense of belonging. We believe in the power of art, education, and sustainability to transform our community into a vibrant, eco-conscious, and culturally enriched neighborhood. Lauren O'Rourke3 years ago Sew Social Newham has provided free access for local people to sew in a supportive and inviting community environment since 2020, however, the ability to access our community, relies upon those individuals already having previous sewing skills and knowledge.We are applying for funding so that we can run a series of free training workshops to give more beginners the opportunity to learn how to sew. We also would like to run some more advanced sessions for those who are more familiar with sewing. This funding would pay for the cost of professional teaching, the hire of the venue, any materials required, transportation and the cost to replace 3 of our aging machines. We feel that learning to sew is a great way to bring creativity into your life as well as continue a traditional and practical life long skill. Sewing is also very theraputic and can be incredibly rewarding if you are making for others. Upcycling and recycling clothes and materials to give them new life is a fantastic way to reduce our environmental impact. We know that our members are saving money by recycling old clothes and they do this in a creative way with loads of support and ideas from other members of Sew Social Newham. At the end of 2022 we ran a very successful introduction to sewing class in collaboration with the Good Hotel. In the space of 1 day we took 26 beginners who had never used a sewing machine before to a place where they could perform the machine basics, and made from scratch a cushion cover and a mini zip bag. On that day we taught individuals who wanted to learn for a hobby to individuals who wanted to get into fashion right through to parents and their children who wanted to learn to sew as a family after being inspired by watching Sewing Bee. Everyone can learn and once you have the basics, its just the practise that you need. The courses we run can give people the basics and then Sew Social Newham sessions can give you the opportunity to practise and so much more in terms of community. We love our community and would love more people to have the joy that we do. We would welcome your support and your vote so we can bring this to more people.

The project "Empower HER" focuses on personal development, cultural enrichment, health and wellbeing and community building. Activities: 1. Cultural Workshops: Organize workshops where members can share their traditions, languages, and cuisines, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding among diverse Eastern European cultures. 2. Skill Sharing Sessions Encourage members to share their skills and expertise, offering workshops on topics like traditional crafts, cooking, dance, and language exchange. 3. Mentorship Program: Pair experienced members with newcomers to provide guidance on adapting to the local culture, navigating challenges, and setting personal goals. 4. Community Events: Host events such as art exhibitions, film screenings, and performances that showcase the rich cultural heritage of Eastern Europe while promoting cross-cultural dialogue. 5. Leadership Training: Provide leadership development sessions to empower women within the group to take on active roles, fostering a sense of ownership and collective responsibility. 6. Roser Badia3 years ago Single Parents Community in Beckton.Single Parents in Beckton for inclusion and community immersion.This project is about building a strong network of single parents in Beckton, who can contribute their strengths and experiences to fortify community bonds between existing neighbours, groups and newcomers, whether they are single parents or not.The project includes the following:· Creation of a network of single parents.· Inter-relations with other groups in the community to foster single parenthood visibility, inclusion and community relations.· An event in the park to promote neighbour relationships and raise awareness of single parenthood. This event will be either a book exchange, jumble sale, or other such event to involve the community at large.· Using the skills acquired by single parents through their solo-parenting journey, such as resilience, tenacity, resourcefulness, fighting spirit, etcetera, a pilot program on linguistic pairing will be devised and put to the test, to help those newcomers to the community, or those in need of English communication skills, to integrate and immerse into the community via the use of language. Volunteers will be sought from the community to pair with newcomers to help them integrate into Beckton and the Royal Docks. Single parents know how difficult it is to navigate alone new unknown territory and are better placed to empathize with asylum seekers, new residents to the area, or residents who wish to acquire a good command of the language. If you are a single parent and want to join me, please do so and vote for this project. If you are not a single parent but live or work in Beckton and you want to improve our Beckton community, get to know your neighbours and strengthen neighbours' relationships and/or be part of the pilot on linguistic pairing, please do join us too and vote for this project.

Daniell Hambrook3 years ago Historically Newham’s voluntary network, supporting the residents of the borough, has had issues with storage and therefore has generally been restricted in the services they can offer. Most offer food services but cannot provide the additional support of equipment and essential supplies as they do not have storage or transport. We also have many donors in Newham and further afield including corporate companies that are trying not to send reusable goods/equipment to landfill. Our project bridges that gap by accepting the donations, storing them and offering them to organisations and people in need (though referrals). This facility would be open to organisations to refer client’s needs which we would then try to fulfil. We want this model to be sustainable and therefore would ask for a nominal donation (£2 for a kettle for example), which would be waived if the organisation felt their client could not afford the donation. We would have volunteers to collect donations and take them to the organisation if no vehicle was available to them. Mike Mer I agree with your assessment of needs and wish I had influence over them. We are not affiliated with the council and have supported the NHS, community and community organisations since the beginning of the pandemic.This project will help people moving into their first homes. Domestic violence cases where they are put in accommodation with just floorboards and no assistance from the authorities.We also help pensioners who can't afford to replace broken items and so much more.We will have referral ppathways and links to organisations doing things like financial support, school uniform and foodbanks.None of us get paid we do it because we care and in most cases have been there ourselves.
