Newham Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) 2022/23
We want to make sure that your local pharmacy (also called a chemist) is giving you the things that you need. For example, your prescription, getting advice on treating minor health concerns and healthy living and/or essential vaccination. We are talking with people who live, work and study in Newham about this.
What is the PNA?
The purpose of the PNA is to assess and set out how the provision of pharmaceutical services can meet the health needs of the population of Newham for a period of up to three years.
Tell us what you think
We are asking your views and comments on the draft pharmaceutical needs assessment report, and if it accurately addresses issues that you consider are relevant to your local pharmacy services. Fill in the survey in Phase 3 of the Timeline on this page.
If you have any questions or are in need of support about this consultation, please email publichealthenquiries@newham.gov.uk

Final Document: Newham Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment 2022
A review of Newham’s community pharmacy services - your views matter
We would like you to tell us if your local pharmacy meets your health needs by taking part in our consultation.
Before completing this consultation, please read the short draft executive summary and conclusion or the full Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment draft report located at the bottom of this page.
What services do community pharmacies offer?
Pharmacies offer a range of services which include:
- dispensing of medicines and appliances on prescription
- sale of medicines to the public
- providing advice to the public on medicines, coping with ill health or general health and wellbeing
- receiving waste medicines for safe destruction
What is a pharmaceutical needs assessment?
We carry out a pharmaceutical needs assessment to identify any gaps in current services, or improvements that could be made to pharmacies in Newham.
Take part in Newham’s consultation
A public consultation is open from 26 January to 25 June 2023. We are asking your views and comments on the draft pharmaceutical needs assessment report, and if it accurately addresses issues that you consider are relevant to your local pharmacy services.
The consultation feedback will be reflected in the final report.
Why we need to undertake a pharmaceutical needs assessment?
The government requires all local authority Health and Wellbeing Boards to review pharmacy services in its area every three years.
Newham’s next pharmaceutical needs assessment is due by the end of October 2022.
Who will use the pharmaceutical needs assessment?
It will help the NHS, Newham Council, and the north east London Integrated Care Board to identify gaps in services or how community pharmacy services might be improved. It is also used to help make decisions about where new pharmacies are needed or a change of premises.
The draft report has been produced by looking at:
- the demographics and health needs of the population
- the current pharmacy network and its services
- a survey to Newham residents on their use and expectations of pharmacy services
- a survey to Newham pharmacy contractors
- an assessment of NHS Pharmacy services commissioned in Newham
