Newham Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) 2022/23
We want to make sure that your local pharmacy (also called a chemist) is giving you the things that you need. For example, your prescription, getting advice on treating minor health concerns and healthy living and/or essential vaccination. We are talking with people who live, work and study in Newham about this.
What is the PNA?
The purpose of the PNA is to assess and set out how the provision of pharmaceutical services can meet the health needs of the population of Newham for a period of up to three years.
Tell us what you think
We are asking your views and comments on the draft pharmaceutical needs assessment report, and if it accurately addresses issues that you consider are relevant to your local pharmacy services. Fill in the survey in Phase 3 of the Timeline on this page.
If you have any questions or are in need of support about this consultation, please email publichealthenquiries@newham.gov.uk
Phases
Consulting Newham: Your Views Matter
What is a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA)?
Newham Health and Wellbeing Board is hosted by Newham Council. The government requires all Health and Wellbeing Boards to produce an assessment of pharmaceutical services in its area every three years, under the NHS. The next assessment is due by the end of the September 2022. This document is called the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA).
Have your say on the Newham Draft Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment
A Public Consultation is being undertaken from October 2022- December 2022 to seek the views of members of the public and other stakeholders, on whether they agree with the contents of this Draft Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment Report and whether it addresses issues that they consider relevant to the provision of pharmaceutical services. The feedback will be reported and reflected in the final revised Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment Report.
We would like you to give us your views on the draft PNA report.
Pharmaceutical Needs Assessments are used by the NHS to decide whether to approve applications for new pharmacies and by commissioners to identify local health needs that could be addressed by pharmacy services. We are required to consult with any patient, consumer or community group in Newham who has an interest in the provision of pharmaceutical services. It is assumed that everyone living in Newham may require services provided by community pharmacies and appliance contractors. We are therefore consulting with the entire resident population of Newham and welcome the views from anyone living in Newham or anyone providing pharmaceutical services in Newham.
What are Pharmaceutical Services?
Pharmaceutical services are one of the many services currently provided under the NHS by community pharmacies and include:
· dispensing of medicines and appliances on prescription
· sale of medicines to the public
· providing advice to the public on medicines, coping with ill health or general
· health and wellbeing
· receiving waste medicines for safe destruction
Who will use the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment?
The PNA will be used by NHS England, Newham Council, and the Clinical Commissioning Group in the Council to make decisions when applications for new pharmacies are received, and for the commissioning of other services that could be delivered by community pharmacies and other providers. The PNA is a report of the present needs for pharmaceutical services. It is used to identify any gaps in current services or improvements that could be made in future pharmaceutical service provision.
Please read the PNA Draft Report or the Draft Executive Summary before completing this form. The draft report has been produced by looking at:
· the demographics and health needs of the population
· the current pharmacy network and its services
· a survey to Newham residents on their use and expectations of pharmacy services
· a survey to Newham pharmacy contractors
· an assessment of NHS Pharmacy services commissioned in Newham
If you have any questions about this activity (or should you require a paper copy of the questionnaire to be sent to you), please contact the PNA project team:
