Romford Road Public Realm Improvement scheme
Romford Road is a key east-west route in Newham, connecting Stratford in the west to Little Ilford and the North Circular (A406) in the east. It provides important connections for pedestrians, cyclists and buses as well as private and commercial vehicles.
The key aim of the Romford Road Public Realm Improvement scheme is to create a better and safer street environment for residents, businesses, visitors and people travelling to destinations within the borough.
- Create a high quality street environment accessible for all, considering a range of abilities and needs
- Provide health benefits of increased physical activity from active travel
- Reduce conflict between different types of road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and motor vehicles to improve road safety
- Introduce new planting and trees to help improve air quality, reduce flooding, increase biodiversity and make Romford Road more welcoming
- Improve walking and cycling routes along Romford Road and to local destinations such as shops, schools and green spaces
- Make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross Romford Road and side streets
- Improve bus journey reliability and make bus stops more accessible
- Support businesses by providing safer loading facilities

The key design changes proposed for the entire length of Romford Road are summarised below.
Safety for pedestrians & cyclists:
- Repair uneven pavement surfaces
- Create a continuous footway across all side streets to improve road safety and give pedestrians priority
- Create better connections for cyclists by linking Romford Road to existing cycle routes and the wider cycle network
- Introduce separated pedestrian and cycle crossings to make it safer to cross the road
- Provide separated cycle tracks along the entire length of Romford Road
Supporting local businesses
- Provide dedicated loading facilities for businesses
- Provide short- stay parking facilities near shops
- Introduce new measures to prevent illegal pavement parking
Supporting bus services
- Make bus lanes operational for 24hours a day to improve reliability
- Upgrade existing bus stop facilities to improve accessibility
Air quality and environment
- Introduce new trees, low-level planting and sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDs) to improve local air quality and reduce flooding

The Romford Road Public Realm Improvement scheme is being delivered in sections to minimise disruption and manage traffic flows.
We develop and consult on detailed designs for each section before we start construction.
To date, we have carried out statutory consultation on the following sections and junctions:
Junction 2, Junction 3, Junction 7,
Section B, Section D, Section F, Section G, Section H, Section I
Early design proposals for other sections and junctions are listed here. We will consult on detailed design proposals before we begin construction.
Last updated 13 October 2026

Ongoing construction works in the sections mentioned below may affect traffic flows. This is due to temporary traffic lights, temporary bus stops, and parking / loading suspensions and access restrictions to side roads.
