Overview

The Community Assemblies will identify how best to address concerns in your area. The assemblies give you and your neighbours direct influence to create a shared vision for the place where you live, work or learn and to help shape its development and growth. This will be your chance to discuss local priorities, establish community projects for your neighbourhood, and influence how the £100,000 available in your neighbourhood will be spent.

Green Street Community Neighbourhood is made up of 3 wards: Green Street East, Green Street West and Boleyn.

In the previous cycle, residents put forward and voted for their top three priorities of concern for each neighbourhood. These priorities will be carried forward to the current cycle.

How to use this platform:

We will use this space to invite you to actively contribute in many different ways on how funding is spent on community projects to improve your local area and to also inform you about the progress of the projects. The timeline illustrates the different stages of engagement, both past and present. Only the current stage is open for contributions, but you can also review past engagements and see what is coming up in the future.

The first Community Assemblies for this cycle will take place in May and there will be an option to attend online or in person. These assemblies will be an opportunity to discuss the local priorities in your area and develop community project ideas for the £100,000 available to improve your neighbourhood. This will also be a chance to find out more about how to apply for funding for your project idea.

In the previous cycle, residents put forward and voted for their top three priorities of concern for each neighbourhood. These priorities will be carried forward to the current cycle. The top three voted priorities for Green Street were:

Community Safety
Cleaner Environment

Approximately £100,000 funding is available to spend on community projects that make local improvements for these three priorities. We are looking for residents and community groups to apply for funding and submit ideas for exciting projects that will help address at least one of these local priorities. Residents can apply for up to £5000 and Voluntary, Community and Faith Sector organisations can apply for up to £20,000.

Project applications are open until Sunday 12th June (11:59pm). You can find application forms and guidance in the attachments below.

Rozina Iqbal4 years ago Drug crimes in the Green Street East, West and Boleyn are becoming an everyday occurrence. This attracts further problems and crimes to the neighbourhood, including anti-social behaviour, which is at an all-time high in the neighbourhood, and provokes gang-related crimes.We will be addressing the Community Safety (ASB and Crime) priority through our project to curtail the use of drugs and support ethnic minority families.Ethnic minority families find the stigma surrounding drug abuse and crimes means they cannot seek support, especially if the drug abuser is female. The barriers confining ethnic minorities to suffer in silence need to come down.We will offer help for families to be emotionally supported and understand their important role in helping their family member, guiding them on how best they can intervene for the drug abuser to overcome misuse of drugs through a supportive program. The program will lead to inducing a reduction in drug-related crimes in the area.We will provide one-to-one family and individual support; involve the community through community intelligence; implement strategies to influence a curtailment of drug abuse; create awareness and develop community involvement and integration through this program; encourage the use of relevant existing Newham services through signposting.

VISWAMBHARAN SARASAN4 years ago The UK Government’s 25-year Environment Plan aims to provide high quality beautiful landscape which is accessible to people in urban areas. The proposed project aims to create wildflower areas (WFAs), install bird nests, bug hotels, and log piles for rare species like stag beetles to bring more biodiversity into East Ham’s Priory Park by the Sree Narayana Guru Mission of the UK, working in the community for 45 years. We will engage with the local communities and schools to co-create the WFAs by providing seed bomb kits. Seed bombs made this way will be broadcasted as community activities to the identified grassy areas in the park. The proposed project, supported by ‘Grow Wild’ of Kew Gardens, will profoundly improve the wellbeing of people who use the park in the coming years. We will also distribute 2000 wildflower seed kits to the local communities and school children to enhance wildlife in the neighbourhoods.Everyone involved from the community will have the chance to create the WFAs, its maintenance and getting involved in social activities to celebrate their achievement. Intervention of this kind, which is low-cost, accessible and transformative will inspire communities to be part of the evolving community landscapes in Newham.

Hope 4 Humanity4 years ago Description:Hope for Humanity is an organization that has been operating in Newham for the past 2 years. We run a Food Bank every Saturday, where we cater for over 200 to 400 people. In past as well as currently we organize and run HAF Projects for 5-11 years old children during the Summer, Christmas and Easter breaks. Our staff team are highly trained and we have vast experience in running projects. Our Aim:We propose to run a project for 50 women and 50 children. Ages for those women will range from 18 - 50 years old and children from 7-12 years old in Green Street Neighborhood. The project will run for two days per week, 5 hours daily, and will target the mental health, the safety and well-being of these groups of people. Why this Project: The rising crime rate in the Borough and the lasting effects of Covid 19 have driven women and children into isolation, and has affected their mental health and their well-being. In addition, 'fear, ' has been a core factor in all of this, making women and children afraid to go out freely in their community. Who will be involved: We will work in consultation with our sponsors, the police, a Nutritionist, the environmental Department, a well known self-defense trainer and our local council, to achieve the desired goals. What we do? (Methodology)To compact this we will arrange for the women and children to get fit, improve their health and keep their their community clean. We will be working from the 'one stop approach concept, 'where we will tackle all the named priorities together'. How will we do it? Each day will be broken up into sessions, where we will provide trainings. on health, on safety and on self protection. We will also provide training of how to keep their community clean, whilst incorporating some practical scenarios. Lastly and certainly not least, we will arrange a weekly robust walk in PRIORY PARK , and finish up with women and children planting vegetables and herbs in the green spaces provided. Conclusion: This project will be carried forward into the future. With determination we will ensure that we tap into other resources to ensure that all women and children in Green Street Neighborhood have the opportunity to be involved, to be healthy, safe, happy and to live fulfilled lives in their community.

Dellie Elsom4 years ago The aim of this project is to develop the community garden at Katherine Road community centre to make it safer, more welcoming and more attractive to local groups and residents to increase use of the centre. It will be a space that can be used for community events to help bring the community together and would be used by residents to plant fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as using it for outdoor social spaces for the local residents. The project would look at cleaning the garden and removing the broken planters and benches and replacing them with new ones including having planters that are accessible for wheelchair users. Also clearing the footpath and making it more accessible. We are also looking at adding in planters to the front green space of the community garden.

Dee Anyogu4 years ago Invest in Parks and Green spaces -. Katherine Road does not currently boast much in the way of Green spaces. It’s a long road, well used by many as a transport route and walked along by school children. The introduction of even small areas of nature and beauty will increase feelings of wellbeing and create pockets of beauty that will increase the pride people feel about their area and hopeful increase a motivation to maintain it.Community safety - After witnessing a few accidents at this junctions, I believe the introduction of well placed flower beds will help to slow traffic, increase caution and improve the road safety in this area.Cleaner Environment - These spaces are notorious for the constant dumping of food waste and fly-tipping. This perpetuates problems of pest infestation (mice, rats and pigeons). Let's repurpose this area and change the way people see it to affect positive change. Whilst my proposal is initially for the Sherrard Road/Katherine Road junction, it is hope that corners of beauty can be introduced along many sites on Katherine Road - funding permitting.

Abdul Chaudhari4 years ago The project aims to install a set of covers for rainy and too sunny days in Priory Park to provide the ability for local residents to use existing equipment and resources in ‘ALL WEATHER’.I plan to install steel posts accommodated with waterproof sails (160gsm) canopies to cover the open gym area and other workout space in Priory Park.I hope to improve facilities which have brought healthier, positive and cohesive changes in my numb life and other improve the general health of all. We appreciate the council’s vision to bring open gym in our local park and insist to upgrade it to all weather open gym.I aim to ask for the max amount of £5,000 to go this project and any of the reminder of the money left to go towards the equipment in Priory Park including existing and new equipment in the park including all equipment for adults and children.

Surinder Kaur4 years ago Training nine Newham residents in Indian Classical Music at Katherine Road Community Center in order to increase mental well being, mindfulness and health. We endeavour to give the youth a safe space and reason not to hang around on the streets. These sessions will upskill them and create some future musicians for Newham.Each session will conclude with a healthy vegetarian meal to increase social cohesion, health, well- being while simultaneously providing a social environment for isolated individuals.There will also be five sessions of women's safety walk and picnic about health eating and safety in Plashet Park.

Emran Chowdhury4 years ago The Youth engagement, Safer Neighbourhood and Skills Development for Young People (YSS) is a project that will have young people and their safety at its core. The priority that we seek to address is Crime & ASB. As active members of the community we have seen the rise in Crime and ASB increase rapidly within our neighbourhood. Our project aims to address the issue, focusing on young people and their futures. Our project will aim to: Prevent young people falling into Crime and ASB by identifying risk factors early which may lead them to be influenced into this way of life. Target young people who are already involved in Crime and ASB, raise awareness of the barriers and impacts crime can cause to themselves, their families and the wider community. Work with young people closely to increase their aspirations, motivating them to contribute positive behaviours. Develop mitigations to tackle drug/gang violence. Create social cohesion through events, workshops and activities to ensure actions and plans put in place are working. Provide placement opportunities, guidance and mentoring to young people to increase their chances of gaining employment.

Paizah Malek-Neave4 years ago Green Street Community Awareness Project – (GS CAP) is a partnership project by Act Up Newham and Riz Entertainment Academy, filling the criteria of CIL funding body and local priorities:- Community safety, Development of health and wellbeing and full usage of Priory Park as Community space for relaxation and entertainment in Green Street Area, from October, 2022. Act Up Newham is local group of disabled artists and Riz Entertainment Academy is voluntary group of musicians providing free services to disadvantage residents. Both groups aim at creating awareness among the spectators; in reducing crime, anti-social behaviour and encouraging them to stay safe, healthy and happy.They are amateur entertainers in stage drama and musical entertainments with DBS checks and practising Equal Opportunities Policies, Equality and Diversity and Safe Guarding Policy.During the six months project delivery cycle, GS CAP will visit three Primary schools, two Secondary schools and three Community Centres to set up drama workshops and activities for budding talents, benefiting 90 Primary School children, 60 Secondary school students and 120 Community Centre users @ £19,500. This project will continue to serve Green Street Community beyond the time framed to ensure value for money, Community participation to meet their artistic goal in life, through sketches, drama workshops and public performances during the grand celebrations at the end of the cycle.

Sam Large4 years ago Investing in local parksIt would be fantastic if more parks in Newham had enclosed areas for dogs to be allowed to run off lead. Whilst many owners are able to let their dogs off in parks, this is less suitable to some dogs (poor recall, high chase drive etc.).Adding more enclosed dog areas to parks will allow all dog owners to give them more socialisation in a safe place.Priory park is well suited to this as it is close to two developments with high population density and a large number of pet owners as residents.

Simon Ward-Wilson4 years ago The children's activity park between Comyns Close/ Ordnance Road is currently heavily used by adults for recreational activities like alcohol consumption etc. The park is left unlocked at night and the result is that there is a build-up of waste that children have to walk through on their way to school, and the park is in no fit state for children to use safely. I don't think it would take much to lock the park up at night and rejuvenate it. I am working on a local building project. It might even be possible to arrange for the construction company to help if there is no money left for this project. I know that construction companies often help with local volunteer work.
