Get Involved
This regular column highlights the community engagement projects and creative collaborations taking place through Newham Heritage Centre. From youth-led panels and school workshops to public exhibitions and local partnerships, we’re working with people of all ages to explore Newham’s rich heritage and shape how it’s shared.
Each month, we’ll share updates from our work with schools, colleges, and community groups, as well as details of events, exhibitions, and outreach projects happening across the borough.

Share Your Memories of Canning Town Library!
Do you remember your first visit to the old Canning Town Library?
Did you use it in the 1950s or 1960s?
Or perhaps you discovered a favourite book there?
As part of Newham Heritage Month, we are collecting memories of the old Canning Town Library. The building has stood for over 100 years, and we are working with a group of Community Researchers to gather stories and experiences for a new exhibition planned at the Newham Heritage Centre.
To share your story, please contact james.king@newham.gov.uk.
Our Reading Room Is Now Open
Ever wondered what your street looked like in the 1970s?
Hoping to find that old copy of the Newham Recorder your mum appeared in?
Curious how today’s local shops compare with Victorian businesses in trade directories?
Come and explore our collections to see what you can uncover! Our Reading Room at Stratford Library has reopened. Our team can help with quick searches, or you can book an appointment to browse the records yourself.
Visits are by appointment on Tuesdays (10:30am–1pm and 2pm–4:30pm).
To book, email archiveslocalstudies@newham.gov.uk or call 020 3373 6881.
