This regular column highlights the community engagement projects and creative collaborations taking place through Newham Heritage Centre. From youth-led panels and school workshops to public exhibitions and local partnerships, we’re working with people of all ages to explore Newham’s rich heritage and shape how it’s shared.
Each month, we’ll share updates from our work with schools, colleges, and community groups, as well as details of events, exhibitions, and outreach projects happening across the borough.

Newham Heritage Centre has a brand-new logo!

We have partnered with talented Graphic Design students from NewVIc (Newham Sixth Form Centre) to develop a new logo for Newham Heritage Centre. Twelve students took part in a special 10-week creative project to produce new designs. The final artwork was designed by student Marius, whose eye-catching concept brilliantly met the brief for the centre. His logo places history and heritage at its heart, capturing the power of Newham’s stories while also resembling many of the shapes found in archive storage spaces.
Students showcased their designs at a special event at NewVIc with Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE. They also heard from creatives Ferha Farooqui, Kay Ibrahim, and Friends Are Always Welcomed, who shared their own creative journeys and how Newham continues to inspire them.
Congratulations to all the students who took part — you’ll be seeing this logo across our channels from now on!
A Special Visit for Eastlea Community School Students

Following our creative heritage project earlier this year, we caught up with Year 9s at Eastlea Community School with a visit to the Canning Town Old Library site on 8 July. Students loved finally seeing inside the building that they had heard so much about. They were really interested in the construction process and the many roles involved. Their ideas have been incorporated into our plans, so being able to show them the space taking shape was really special.
As part of the visit, we ran a session featuring a small collection of material about a young girl buried at Woodgrange Park Cemetery in 1893. Using these sources, students explored what life might have been like for a child in Victorian times. It was inspiring to see their imaginations spark as they considered the untold stories behind the collection — how she might have died, who her friends were, and what she may have loved doing. What more could her story tell us?
