Get Involved
This regular column highlights the community engagement projects and creative collaborations taking place through Newham Heritage Centre. From youth-led panels and school workshops to public exhibitions and local partnerships, we’re working with people of all ages to explore Newham’s rich heritage and shape how it’s shared.
Each month, we’ll share updates from our work with schools, colleges, and community groups, as well as details of events, exhibitions, and outreach projects happening across the borough.

Phases
May
Eastlea School Heritage Project
We’re working with residents of all ages to shape its future. Throughout March, we collaborated with Year 9 students at Eastlea Community School. During this six-week project, students explored what heritage means to them and how archives and collections can be used to tell stories from history. They applied what they had learned to create pieces of art, now showcased in an exhibition at Canning Town Library.
Newham Sixth Form College Co-Branding Project
Our co-branding project in collaboration with Newham Sixth Form College has now concluded. Over a period of eight weeks, twelve graphic design students, led by facilitator Sarah Mansell, developed branding ideas for the new centre. The students’ imaginative concepts were brought together in a creative showcase on 23 May, during which the Heritage Centre's new logo was unveiled. The winning design was created by Marius — congratulations!
Youth Panel
Our Youth Panel, made up of local 18 to 24-year-olds, meets once a month to discuss heritage, local history, and the development of the centre. They have so far taken part in workshops with our Archivist, Project Manager, and Curator. They also visited the Museum of London Docklands, spending the day with the Learning Team, who kindly designed a morning of museum storytelling workshops for them. In May, the students visited the gallery Auto Italia, where curator Milda Baltakytė presented the latest exhibition, THE ECHO OF PROTEST IS DISTANT TO THE PROTEST, by Berlin-based Iranian interdisciplinary artist Nazanin Noori.
Heritage Centre Roadshow
Throughout spring and summer, the Heritage Centre team is travelling around the borough to engage with residents about the stories they would like to see told in the centre, and why they would be encouraged to visit.
