East Ham Community Assemblies 2022

Overview

The Community Assemblies will identify how best to address concerns in your area. The assemblies give you and your neighbours direct influence to create a shared vision for the place where you live, work or learn and to help shape its development and growth. This will be your chance to discuss local priorities, establish community projects for your neighbourhood, and influence how the £100,000 available in your neighbourhood will be spent.

East Ham is made up of 3 wards: East Ham, East Ham South and Wall End.

In the previous cycle, residents put forward and voted for their top three priorities of concern for each neighbourhood. These priorities will be carried forward to the current cycle.

How to use this platform:

We will use this space to invite you to actively contribute in many different ways on how funding is spent on community projects to improve your local area and to also inform you about the progress of the projects. The timeline illustrates the different stages of engagement, both past and present. Only the current stage is open for contributions, but you can also review past engagements and see what is coming up in the future.

In this phase, the East Ham Working Group and internal monitoring group will review project applications and decide whether they meet the criteria for funding.

In this phase you can also submit comments and questions on the project proposals. Scroll down to view the projects and add your comments.

Projects which meet the criteria will be put forward for residents to decide how they would like the £100,000 to be allocated. This voting phase will take place between in July.

You will also be able to register for the next Community Assembly to hear about project proposals put forward by your neighbours and to find out how you can vote for the projects you want to see happening in your local area.

Irina Drytchak 4 years ago The project will include the following; - Self-defence classes led by MMARAP (https://www.mmarap.co.uk) for deaf and hearing women, empowering discipline, self-esteem, confidence and team-building skills. - Deaf Awareness training for local organisations and community centres within East Ham. - British Sign Language Storytelling with Trovers Orr, author of 'Daniel & The Rubbish Monster', educating children on how to keep the environment clean. We aim to provide each project three times per month from September 2022-March 2023, delivered in East Ham Library and local community centres in the borough. We will ensure British Sign Language Interpreters are present to ensure all projects are accessible to deaf and hearing people. All three projects will benefit the local community with safety, accessibility and environment. In addition, the community’s health and well-being and inclusion for deaf residents.

Paul Sammut4 years ago Folkstone Road Allotment Accessible Community GardenThe concept of the accessible community garden is to transform a currently unused allotment plot into an inclusive communal garden with 11 raised planting beds with communal greenhouse, compost, and storage area, water tank and drinking water point.There will also be a covered pergola with picnic benches to encourage all the raised bed holders to sit, converse, share ideas and produce. This place will also provide opportunities for bed holders to engage with others, supporting wellbeing and helping to encourage better mental health. The pergola will also have guttering and a water butt for water harvesting and will encourage water conservation.The area will have an accessible path all around the beds which is level and step free to enable people who are less mobile or use a wheelchair to be involved. All other parts of community garden will also be accessible.

David Sparks4 years ago Our vision is to create a sustainable Cycle club on the borough that will improve local community facilities within a public space and help towards the health and wellbeing of those taking part within our sessions.We aim to use the funding to help purchase bikes/helmets and coaching costs to run a BMX/Balance and SEND sessions each week for 1 year, this will help establish the club and make it a sustainable projectWe aim to engage with young people ranging from ages 3 up to 18 – open community sessions.There will also be sessions for young people with special educational needs (SEND) will be for this cohort of young people only. We have managed to persuade 2 contractors to gift work up to £20,000 to resurface the existing track which is in a poor state of repair to start our project with a ‘Summer of fun’ to provide activities for the local young people during school holidays.We also are looking to use part of the building next to the track to provide a hub area for the young people and parents whilst activities are taking place to create a club culture. This would also give us room to create a Cycle repair workshop with our aim to teach young people how to repair their own bikes and help recycle bikes to gift to the local community.Our dream is to represent Newham at the London Youth Games in 2023 in BMX.Some of the activities we are looking to provide are BMX over 10yrsBMX under 10yrsBalance bikes for 3-6yrsSEND sessionsCycle mechanics

John Crockatt4 years ago This project will continue to build on the budding community garden at Brampton Park, which is in need of support to become an established green space and community hub. This garden will become a focal point for sharing knowledge about plants and gardening, for learning about eco-friendly growing practices and for inviting young people in East Ham to have a rich relationship with the natural environment.Last year Community Neighbourhoods funded initial clearing and planting, and this proposal would support this early work through further development by: The building of raised beds and garden furniture (summer 2022). This will be organised through a team of volunteers and an expert carpenter with experience working in community garden planning. Free community gardening workshops throughout the year (Autumn 2022- Summer 2023). These workshops will be led by an experienced gardener and participants will learn how to repair and maintain the garden, and will also be introduced to seasonal growing skills. The creation of a community gardening team to liaise with the council and Brampton Primary School and take responsibility for ongoing maintenance of the garden. This should lead to opportunities for involvement with school children from nursery through to year 6.

Yvonne Johnson4 years ago Helping volunteers from the community with skillset, trade people skilled in construction, wood work, glazing, soft furnishing, plumbing etc. to give back to the community.This will allow youth engagement, where they will be encouraged to take part and these skills taught to them.We would like a space to be used for classroom spaces, after-school clubs, dance, singing, IT, cookery, and health promotion initiatives amongst other activities; all run by community volunteers, who are willing to give back to the community for free.It will also be the temporary headquarters of the New Legacy organisation.There will also be a community garden established with permanent sheltered seating areas (gazebos and pergolas), which will engender cohesion of all the generations; and will create a social space to encourage the elderly to assimilate with the other generations.

Prabhudas Tanna4 years ago Meeli’s Social Club - A project that will offer parents with young adults (aged 16 years and over) who have SEN + Mental health or any other disability, four hours of a safe club to give friendship, social skills + creative activities on a weekly basis in East Ham Library. The project aims to give parents a rest and their young adults the chance to have fun, learn new skills + have a regular place to meet. The young adults will be supported to try new skills like painting, pottery, how to use technology, gardening, cooking and other life skills like how to make a cup of tea.

Hannah Duthie4 years ago I propose using the funding to make a small area with new skatepark facilities to give young people a safe and dedicated area to meet up and share their passion for skateboarding in Newham, preferably within E6 - for example in Central Park, Brampton or New City Green park,Most play areas locally are suitable for Under 8's and there is little to no provision for teenagers. I have a 15 yr old who loves to skate and we currently have to travel out of newham to access skate facilities - either to Barking, Mudchute, Mile End or Southbank.Supporting and targeting priority 1 (safe, cleaner, more accessible) and priority 3 (parks and open spaces) from our current neighbourhood priorities this project would create facilities that Newham currently doesn't have locally. It would support and enhance other projects that aim to tackle health issues such as obesity, diabetics and mental health in young people (which has been exacerbated in many families due to covid restrictions).

Freya Harwood Bond4 years ago The 'Waste Not Workshops' project will be conducted by three local artists who will each run a course of 6 free workshops over the course of 6 months at Red Door Studios. This will culminate in a free exhibition for residents to observe the results which will include a sculpture made solely from litter from our parks to serve as a visual reminder to residents to take care of our communal open spaces.We will organise collection times so residents can drop-off waste which we can then re-use, consistent with the rate that they are being disposed of according to the statistics of MSW by material.Through these workshops we can teach participants new techniques with a wide variety of waste materials to help inform them of ways they can consciously re-use and re-cycle. They will also aid residents who are struggling with mental health issues.Our workshops:Paper-making - participants can make handmade paper which we will then convert into usable items like sketchbooks and printed wrapping paper.Collage Club - each session will focus on a different material including metal, plastic, wood and textiles informed by the work of accomplished artists who incorporate waste materials in their work.Mythical Beasts - participants will create mixed media creatures which represent cultural identity and expression from around the world.

marianna zappi4 years ago A 5 weeks of creative writing course (excluding performance) aimed to enable young children between the age of 8 -13 years old to express their voices through the use of creative writing. The course will be oriented and focused on confidence-building exercising, public speaking, and storytelling, and will enable the young attendees to feel empowered and able to let their voices be heard, whilst being able to address what a safer neighborhood would look like to them.

Local provision and outdoors so good for environment – no transport costs / heating and lighting. Discussion on environmental issues especially around food/drink/ use of plastic/recycling Improves community facilities and public spaces by using them and making more aware of these public spaces and promotes use of local cafes. Contributes to improving health and wellbeing as incorporates a range of wellness activities open to all women Weekly sessions in Plashet and Central Parks of wellness activities including breathing, yoga, Pilates and talking through issues such as menopause, stress and diet. During winter months, monthly discussion sessions hopefully making use of the cafes for healthy foods and snack and chat/breathing and mental health focus.

Harry Gregson4 years ago We are proposing x4 annual community events, x2 at East Ham library and x2 at Central Park, where all residents will be able to access free information and inclusive activities. We would include stalls with representatives from the following types of organisations: local adult education centres/community centres offering activity enrolment, social prescribers offering health advice, the police, LGBT support groups, foodbank information, information on where to access immigration support and benefits and other community support groups. We will offer team building, sport-based and creative activities for children throughout each day. For the days based in Central Park we will also host nature and bird-watching walks. We would also provide free refreshments using local catering companies from the East Ham area. We aim to include live entertainment and local speakers from the community, including talks on recycling, and preserving East Ham’s natural environment. These events will be widely publicised through print campaigns, online and through local school assemblies.

Lee Raggett4 years ago Clothing Poverty is a huge issue in Newham. Every week we have requests for clothing for adults and children who live in poverty, are victims of modern day slavery, domestic violence or are homeless. We currently have a Baby Bank but don't have the capacity to ensure that we meet every request for clothes for children over the age of 5 or adults. This project aligns with the priorities of safer and cleaner neighbourhood and the environment. It would be delivered in both East Ham and Stratford and also addresses the priorities of improved health and wellbeing. The community wardrobe would support people to have dignity and choice with accessing clothing.

Danielle Baker4 years ago Plashet Park is a lovely park with a lovely cafe now and children's playground but the public toilets are atrocious.I propose that the current toilet block is gutted, refurbished and a jet washer bought so it can be maintained by the park rangers, also that it is locked and unlocked in line with the park opening and closing each day.This proposal takes on all three of the safer, cleaner and more accessible neighbourhood, environment, and parks and Open Spaces aspects of community projects cycle.

Ann Ashton4 years ago We intend to work with Newham council and property owner of 358 Central Park Road, Siddique Rafiq, who's permission has been granted, to create a large art mural on the side of this property. We very much hope this can be the first of many in this relatively mural poor area, which is prone to fly tipping, anti social behaviour and most sadly and recently a death. We hope that something striking and beautiful will help moral within the community and dissuade people from vandalising this area- the wall is currently covered in low quality graffiti.We have asked Ferha Farooqui, a local urban artist living in East Ham, to create a piece reflecting the local heritage and internationalism of the area. Her recent works have been purchased by the London Guildhall, though she would gift this one to the Borough of Newham.

Faisal Islam4 years ago This project involves teaching people, with a focus on young people, how to upcycle the products that they’d have otherwise thrown away. The intent of this project is to create a cleaner neighbourhood and spark creativity in people with the intent to create a more beautiful place to live in.This project addresses “A safer, cleaner and more accessible neighbourhood” with a touch of teaching children how to be creative and inspiring them towards following their dreams.

MAHAMMAD Rafi SHAIK4 years ago The Community Assembly program commenced in 2018 and has given the right to the residents of Newham London to come up with ground-breaking innovative solutions for a better place of living. Considering the prevailing projects that have been already implemented, it is obvious that the entire community is concerned about environmental health. It is only possible if the ecological life supports providing acceptable fresh air to breathe, clear water controls pesticides, and looking after the bio-diversity area and eco-tourism park. The project is aimed toward the ecology parks and the bio-diversity area of East Ham while benefiting the entire local community neighborhood area. Although East Ham has already come up with various ecology parks, but it has been seen that, newly planted trees and the animals are getting extinct owing to the unsuitable environmental conditions as well as the wrong selection of insecticides and pesticides. The project provides a revolutionary hardware sensory module to detect the various entities like temperature, pressure, and harmful as well as good gases present in the environment. The side effects of pesticides on plants and soil will also be detected. The data will be collected and cultured to provide an analytical report on which environment suits which trees and animals. The process will be automatized with the help of the most advanced technologies, that is machine learning and big data analytics through exploratory data analytics and machine learning. The data sample as output will even benefit the human community to keep trees in their garden according to their needs and health condition especially the pregnant women and the senior citizens. A desktop and mobile application will be made alongside to provide a dashboard view of the present location condition. A smartwatch-friendly dashboard application will be made to display the environmental conditions.

Vijith Vijay4 years ago We conduct character education sessions through education for heroism to mitigate the impact of anti-social attitudes, juvenile crime, and involvement in gang violence. We instil heroic ambition in children to live for themselves and for others through education for moral values like humility, community spirit, and bridging the gap between children and parents.Our project addresses the need for a safer community by educating the youngest and most vulnerable, equipping them with the tools needed to stay out of gang violence and juvenile crime. We do this by instilling heroic ambition.

Abdul Chaudhari4 years ago The project aim's to install a set of covers for rainy and too sunny days in Priory Park to provide the ability for local residents to use existing equipment and resources in 'All Weather' I plan to install steel posts accommadated with waterproof sails(160gsm) canopies to cover the gym area and another workout space in Priory Park. I hope not only to to improve required upgrade of most used equipment that facilities all that is there is well appreciated especially the positive results they show to improve health of individuals. I aim to ask for the max amount of £5,000 to go this project and any of the reminder of the money left to go towards the equipment in Priory Park including existing and new equipment in the park including all equipment for adults and children. To cover the middle of children play area (next to the slides) and a workout area.

The park is still shut.Within the previous cycle of Community Assemblies, there was a proposalsubmitted for a Design Out Crime Survey in Central Park. I think it lapsed.Would it serve to reassure, if it could be reinstated.SUPPLEMENTARYIf there is going to be such a survey, could general questions about general experience of the park be tagged on?FURTHER POSSIBLE SUPPLEMENTARY.I understand the Bowling Green is now played on..presumably weekends.What about use of the Hut during the week....for a let to another group..

Ideas and options would include but not limited to: rainbows, nature, images and symbols of diversity, East Ham Heritage, national flags of our residents etc.Hot spots for murals given to me by local residents so far are but these are not final:Red Door StudiosMitcham Road outside pharmacyAlexandra Road (Viacarage lane side)Frinton Road/Hubert Road PostersCompetition in Brampton and Vicarage Primary Schools. Competition promoted through an A4 letter sent out to parents of both schools outlining the plans and some suggested ideas/images for the children (anti-flytipping, we love newham etc).20 X A4/3 Posters to be distributed and installed around East Ham South.

Anna Epishcheva4 years ago A nimble "train with your own weight" (calisthenics) open-air gym installed at Plashet Park ("Parks and Open Spaces") to benefit local population from more inclusive physical activity, building social connections and also fighting knife crime ("A safer, cleaner and more accessible neighbourhood").Plashet Park already has good facilities for team and pair sports - over the weekend you can see teams playing cricket & football. Tennis, baseball & basketball courts are always busy and in the workday mornings small groups of women and men are having their runs in the park. However, there are no facilities for the (interested in fitness) community members who want to engage in individual exercise. Calisthenics gym can be exactly the right fit here as it will allow local population interested in fitness and well-being to come together, have friendly competitions and learn from each other.Additionally, this place can become a place for personal trainers to conduct their activities with their clients - so this gym will contribute to East Ham locals starting their own businesses.Additionally, engaging with the team at Steel Warriors (https://www.steelwarriors.co.uk), the people behind 3 successful gyms like that, the community not only send a strong message about knife crime, but also benefit from tried-and-tested approach to installing and promoting these gyms,A quote from The Guardian article:https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/oct/03/cutting-edge-turning-street-knives-into-urban-gymsMost significantly, though, the gym has enabled locals of all skill levels and socio-economic backgrounds to share exercise tips and life hacks while dusting calloused palms with grip-enhancing chalk and waiting for their turn on the bar. “Every single person in this area has trained here at least once,” says Shakadé Khan, a 22-year-old member of Instinct with a silver tongue. He only got to know his neighbours when they started working out side by side. Now, “We say hello to each other and they say hello to my mother,” he says. “Steel Warriors has opened doors to a new community.”
