Cycle Future Route 7 - Phase 1A

Cycle Future Route 7 is a proposed new cycle route that will support a better cycle link between Leyton, Stratford, West Ham and Plaistow.

  • Phase 1A will run along Liberty Bridge Road, and the A112 from Leyton Road at Chobham Road in the north to Angel Lane at Great Eastern Road in the south
  • Phase 1B will run from West Ham Lane at Broadway (Stratford) in the north to Manor Way at the Greenway in the south
  • Phase 2 will run along the A112 from New Plaistow Road at Manor Road, via Plaistow underground station, to High Street (Plaistow) at Clegg Road (A114)

This consultation is focused on Phase 1A.

Local cycle network

What we are proposing

This new proposed cycle route will bring about a significant improvement in the level of service for cycling between Leyton and Stratford, and will support a broader network of cycle routes and other measures to reduce motor vehicle traffic and speeds, improve physical activity levels and air quality.

Specifically, the proposed scheme includes:

  • A fully segregated two-way cycle track running along Liberty Bridge Road, and the east side of Leyton Road / Angel Lane between Chobham Road and Great Easter Road
  • A link to the proposed cycle track on Penny Brookes Street
  • Improvements to junctions to support cycling safety
  • Two new zebra crossings and a new signalised crossing along the A112
  • Integrating Windmill Lane into a cycling network, which has an approved modal filter to prevent motor vehicle through traffic but allows pedestrian and cyclist permeability
  • Improvements to the entrance of the play area on Leyton Road
  • New trees and greenery on the east side of Leyton Road

This proposal is subject to land adoptions.

CFR7 Proposals Map

Why we are proposing these changes

The Mayor of London has asked Transport for London to put the Healthy Streets Approach at the heart of its decision making. This is a system of policies and strategies to help Londoners use cars less and walk, cycle and use public transport more often. To achieve this, TfL is planning a longer-term and coherent cycle network across London.

According to TfL's Strategic Cycling Analysis (2017), based on existing cycling infrastructure and potential cycling route demand, the proposed CFR7 route is a ‘top potential connection.’

CFR7 shown as a 'top potential connection'

In Newham’s Cycling Strategy 2017/18 – 2024/25, we identified the proposed CFR7 route as a proposed strategic cycling corridor, in line with TfL analysis. Currently, the route has a low score in terms of cycling level of service.

We are therefore proposing improvements to create safer and more inviting conditions for cycling.
