Calling all Newham Council Tenants and Leaseholders

Newham Housing Services are developing a new Resident Involvement Strategy and we want your help.

What will this strategy do?

Our residents contact our housing services in different ways for different reasons. Some people may be part of a group that meets regularly to talk about certain issues, while others might just reach out to tell us about something that's not working. We want to make sure that everyone feels heard, no matter how they contact us, and that we're using your feedback in the best way possible.

What is a strategy?

A strategy explains where an organisation wants to go and how it plans to get there. For this Resident Involvement Strategy, it means deciding what we want resident involvement to look like and how we will make it happen. It also means thinking about what needs to change or improve to make this possible.

Background

In 2021, Newham's Housing Service created our first Resident Involvement Strategy. Since then, we have worked with tenants and leaseholders on more than 100 estate improvement projects, delivered 20 Fun Days, over 30 Local Area Forums, 2 Performance Review Panels, 5 working groups, and helped start 6 Tenants and Residents Associations.

Following the service’s recent C4 grading from the Housing Regulator we are committed to furthering our work to involve residents in meaningful and accessible ways.

We need a new strategy that sets out our improved approach, and this time we are involving residents from the very start, this strategy will be developed using your ideas and opinions to make sure that everything we are planning works for you.

Over summer 2024, a small group of residents responded to a survey we sent out to tenants and leaseholders. We have used their feedback to start work on the new our strategy.

They told us:

Sharing findings and resident workshops

May 1, 2025 - May 18, 2025

Over 100 people took part in the online survey, and we wish to thank everyone who took the time to share their thoughts.

We are now inviting you to join us at a workshop that will build upon the findings of these findings. This will develop more detailed ideas that will shape the final Resident Involvement Strategy.

The workshops will take place on Monday 12th May online and on Thursday 15th May in person at Stratford Town Hall. Both sessions will take place from 6:30pm to 8:15pm.

You can register by clicking the link in the event box below. Places are available on a first come, first served basis.

Survey findings

Residents who responded to the survey told us:

  • You liked the principles we put forward; we had positive feedback from 75% of all those who responded
  • About 30% had concerns about how achievable the strategy would be to deliver. We are taking this into account as we develop it further
  • The three principles that were most important to you were:
  1. Transparency: You want your landlord to tell you what is happening with your homes and communities. Being clear and honest helps everyone trust each other
  2. Accountability: You want to be able to check if the council is doing a good job. This can be done through regular meetings, reviews, and clear reports.
  3. Responsiveness: You want us to actively listen to you by acting on what’s being said. We will make sure your concerns and ideas lead to real changes.
  • You told us that the most important things to hear from the Council about are:
  1. Information about repairs and maintenance to your block or estate (75% of respondents)
  2. Things that are going to change in your local area (62% of respondents)
  3. Information about new or changing policies and strategies (44% of respondents)
  • We were also told the most popular ways of receiving information are:
  1. Email newsletters from the Mayor or community neighbourhood team (53% of respondents)
  2. Letters sent to your home (53% of respondents)
  3. Posters on noticeboards (51% of respondents)
  • The activities that you told us you are most interested in are:
  1. Local groups that aim to improve your estate or neighbourhood (51% of respondents)
  2. Meeting Council officers and people from your neighbourhood face-to-face (45% of respondents)
  3. How the Council is performing – what is going well and what isn’t going so well (40% of respondents)

The survey also collected lots of fantastic new ideas for principles, ways you can get involved, and ways of the Council getting in touch with you. We are really happy to have received these comments and are building them into our future strategy.
