Calling all Newham Council Tenants and Leaseholders

Newham Housing Services are developing a new Resident Involvement Strategy and we want your help.

What will this strategy do?

Our residents contact our housing services in different ways for different reasons. Some people may be part of a group that meets regularly to talk about certain issues, while others might just reach out to tell us about something that's not working. We want to make sure that everyone feels heard, no matter how they contact us, and that we're using your feedback in the best way possible.

What is a strategy?

A strategy explains where an organisation wants to go and how it plans to get there. For this Resident Involvement Strategy, it means deciding what we want resident involvement to look like and how we will make it happen. It also means thinking about what needs to change or improve to make this possible.

Background

In 2021, Newham's Housing Service created our first Resident Involvement Strategy. Since then, we have worked with tenants and leaseholders on more than 100 estate improvement projects, delivered 20 Fun Days, over 30 Local Area Forums, 2 Performance Review Panels, 5 working groups, and helped start 6 Tenants and Residents Associations.

Following the service’s recent C4 grading from the Housing Regulator we are committed to furthering our work to involve residents in meaningful and accessible ways.

We need a new strategy that sets out our improved approach, and this time we are involving residents from the very start, this strategy will be developed using your ideas and opinions to make sure that everything we are planning works for you.

Over summer 2024, a small group of residents responded to a survey we sent out to tenants and leaseholders. We have used their feedback to start work on the new our strategy.

They told us:

Exploring principles for resident involvement

March 25, 2025 - April 14, 2025

We have used resident feedback to create a set of 10 principles as a starting point for our strategy.

The principles are the main ideas that our plans will be based on. We believe these principles should be at the heart of the strategy. Now, we want to know what you think of them.

We would also like to hear your ideas for what would help more residents get involved in solving housing issues and shaping improvements, and how we can make sure people feel like their input is meaningful.

Please complete the survey to share your opinions. You can also complete this in person by attending one of the drop-in events listed at the bottom of the page.

10 Principles for resident involvement:

1.    Transparency: We should always tell residents what is happening with their homes and communities. Being clear and honest helps everyone trust each other.

2.    Inclusivity: We will make sure everyone can join in, no matter who they are or what they can do. We will remove any obstacles so everyone feels included.

3.    Accountability: We want residents to be able to check if the council is doing a good job. This can be done through regular meetings, reviews, and clear reports.

4.    Empowerment: We will help residents take charge of things that matter to them. We will give them the tools, support, and training they need to make a difference.

5.    Collaboration: We will work together with residents like partners. We will make decisions and solve problems together to build a stronger community.

6.    Responsiveness: We will show that we are listening by acting on what residents say. We will make sure their concerns and ideas lead to real changes.

7.    Community Building: We will bring residents together to solve problems, celebrate good things, and create a sense of belonging.

8.    Sustainability: We will focus on long-term plans that keep people involved and improve things over time. We will regularly check and update the plans based on what residents say and need.

9.    Trust-Building: We will show we can be trusted by always keeping our promises. Trust is the key to a good relationship.

10. Respect: We will treat all residents with kindness and value their ideas and contributions.
