Beckton Parks Masterplan

Co-designing a Sustainable Future for our Green Spaces.

Newham Council are working with residents and community stakeholders to create a future vision for the Beckton Parks Masterplan area.

The area covers 2 council wards: Beckton and Custom House. It includes the largest amount of local authority managed green space in the borough and a variety of leisure and community facilities situated within Beckton District Park (North and South), New Beckton Park, Beckton Corridor, Newham City Farm Site and King George V Park:

The landscape offers enormous potential to create new and improved sports, leisure, wildlife and community led opportunities through improving existing spaces and facilities and re-purposing areas to better meet local needs.

We are planning a variety of ways for you to get involved in co-designing this exciting masterplan over the coming months. Engagement opportunities and events will be advertised throughout the project phases below.

Anna Yusuf4 years ago Through listening to local people we recognise the areas and communities surrounding Beckton Parks are diverse in many ways. People celebrate the diversity of cultures, ethnicities, languages, backgrounds, beliefs, knowledge and experiences and are proud to be part of the ‘melting pot’ of diverse culture that is Newham.The Beckton Parks Master Plan is an opportunity for this diversity to be appreciated, celebrated and supported into the future for generations to come. This means acknowledging and embracing diverse demographics and working with communities to create supportive, intentional and safe spaces that meet their specific and unique needs.We’ve heard some great ideas so far:● Exercise and play equipment designed specifically for people with special educational needs and disabilities● Sensory garden designed for children with special educational needs and disabilities● ‘Quiet zones’ or meditation spaces to support people with anxiety and other mental health conditions which benefit from calm, natural spaces● Communication boards and signs using icons, plain English and braille to provide information about the facilities in the park● Well maintained outdoor prayer facilities with a tap to wash

Anna Yusuf4 years ago Through listening to local people we’ve heard that smaller changes of care, maintenance and the provision of basic facilities can go a long way to enhance the experience of visitors. Many believe basic infrastructures encourage both people and place to thrive and provide the basis for a happy and healthy future.The Beckton Parks Master Plan is an opportunity to establish strong foundations for the future of green spaces. We’ve learnt that change is welcomed by many local people, but is conditional on the care and upkeep of infrastructures that can help support sustainable growth. From what we’ve heard, people don’t want to see the big, shiny and the new - but want the protection and enhancement of existing spaces and places they have grown to value and love.We’ve heard some great ideas so far:● Enough and better maintained toilets, bins, benches, play equipment and cafes to meet the needs of increasing park users● Open up Will Thorne Pavilion, Newham City Farm site and the Pavilion on Beckton District Park North lake as soon as possible to enable local groups to make use of the facilities to benefit the wider community● Changing rooms and storage for existing sports teams and clubs● Better paved pathways at entrances and exits of the park accessible for wheelchair, mobility scooter and pram use

Anna Yusuf4 years ago Through listening to local people we’ve heard that feeling safe is essential for park visitors to feel relaxed and enjoy themselves in Beckton Parks.The experiences described by people we’ve met present an opportunity for the future of the Beckton Parks Master Plan to cultivate a sense of trust between people and their park, allowing people to feel they can use it at all times, night and day.We’ve heard some great ideas so far:● Pop-up tuc shop after school to animate the park to make it feel safer● Improved lighting after dark that lights up faces, prevents shadows and illuminates hiding places● Events after dark including a female-led night-time running club● Friendship benches with conversation prompts and questions to encourage people to speak to others in the park● Prevent motorbikes from using footpaths in the parks as tracks

Anna Yusuf4 years ago Through listening to local people we’ve heard a strong interest in learning new skills and knowledge within locally accessible green spaces. Many of those we’ve spoken to especially recognise the importance of children from urban places becoming familiar with nature and wildlife.The Beckton Parks Master Plan is an opportunity to create spaces and places of learning to inspire the next generation to care for natural habitats. It will help to maintain the biodiversity present in the parks, enabling both people and places to thrive into the future. There’s also an opportunity to encourage more people to use the parks through the provision of educational initiatives and in turn, remove embedded barriers that people face that prevent them from using the parks.We’ve heard some great ideas so far:● Dedicated spaces for learning about nature and wildlife through caring for animals and the natural landscape● Create more opportunities for local schools play an active role in using and caring for green spaces through tree planting and re-wilding initiatives● Educational information signs about biodiversity within the parks with facts about plants and birds● Workshops to teach children about where their food comes from

Anna Yusuf4 years ago Through listening to local people we’ve heard passion and excitement surrounding opportunities to be involved in shaping and supporting the future of Beckton Parks. The different people we’ve met all have varying amounts of time, energy, interest and expertise but most agree on wanting to get involved more, in ways that work for them.We’ve also heard consistent admiration and gratitude towards those who are already investing their time and energy to create spaces, places and services that are accessible to local people. In particular, the area around the pond on the Beckton Corridor has been referred to frequently. It is clearly a well-loved community asset, heralded for its grassroots approach to place making. The Beckton Parks Master Plan is an opportunity to celebrate, maintain and support community-led spaces and services in a way that is realistic for both local people and local council.We’ve heard some great ideas so far:● Continued genuine consultation during the subsequent phases of the Masterplan and include existing park users in the co-design of specific spaces that they will use in the future● Launch community-led pilot projects to develop methods for local organisations to occupy and activate spaces within the park● Create more opportunities for community food growing and better manage the existing allotments system so vacant plots are re-allocated● Better publicise local community events to encourage people to get involved

Anna Yusuf4 years ago Through listening to local people we’ve recognised the value of Beckton Parks for supporting the mental and physical health of communities across the Borough. Many feel having access to the parks empowers them to have more agency over their own health and wellbeing, through the provision of a place to play, relax, exercise and be close to nature.The Beckton Parks Master Plan is an opportunity to re-energise and invest in the spaces, places and projects that encourage people to look after themselves and their families.We’ve heard some great ideas so far:● Cycling networks, safe routes and bike parking through the parks to encourage people to cycle from A-B● Better communicate the sports and fitness activities that take place in the parks so local people attend more often● More sports and fitness activities for mothers whose children have grown up● Water fountains for drinking● Gymnastics area with soft, grassy terrain● Astroturf area for young people to practice football● Wheels park for skating, bmx and more
