Beckton & Royal Docks Community Assemblies 2022

Overview

The Community Assemblies will identify how best to address concerns in your area. The assemblies give you and your neighbours direct influence to create a shared vision for the place where you live, work or learn and to help shape its development and growth. This will be your chance to discuss local priorities, establish community projects for your neighbourhood, and influence how the £100,000 available in your neighbourhood will be spent.

Background

Beckton and Royal Docks Community Neighbourhood is made up of 3 wards; Beckton ward, Royal Albert ward and Royal Victoria ward.

In the previous cycle, residents put forward and voted for their top three priorities of concern for each neighbourhood. These priorities will be carried forward to the current cycle.

How to use this platform:

We will use this space to invite you to actively contribute in many different ways on how funding is spent on community projects to improve your local area and to also inform you about the progress of the projects. The timeline illustrates the different stages of engagement, both past and present. Only the current stage is open for contributions, but you can also review past engagements and see what is coming up in the future.

suzannah walker4 years ago The project will be a sports and football programme for young people in Beckton and Royal Docks (14-18 year olds) - football sessions and special events encouraging other people my age to become more physically active and social. We will organise weekly evening football sessions, training and games. We will also have 2 football tournaments during the project.Most local young people can’t afford sports equipment, to rent pitches or to pay for training. All sessions will therefore be free. Free snacks & drinks will also be included for them. The project will be delivered in North Woolwich. RDLAC has agreed to let us use their sports court and hall for training. We will also use the local parks and hire pitches for games and tournaments. We will pay local football coaches as well as offer sports and football coaching to young volunteers to become coaches themselves. We will also arrange basic 1st aid training for everyone taking part. We have also discussed running a football tournament with the local community police. They are able to secure Newham Leisure centre. This will be a great way to encourage discussion and young people feeling more comfortable around the police making the area safer.

suzannah walker4 years ago A home for TS Thunderer (Sea Cadets)We have secured land at the Royal Docks and sourced some old shipping containers for re-purpose so our project is to build and establish a new HQ in the docks.TS Thunderer was situated in Davis Street from 1942 however due to asbestos we had to relocate. SS Robins Trust provided us with a temporary home whilst they were trying to raise funds to refurbish SS Robin the ship, the world’s oldest steam coaster, which would have been our HQ. Unfortunately, the trust was unable to raise the funds and so we were asked again to leave our temporary HQ – a shop front on Royal Docks (our home for 7 years).To build a new HQ in the docks offering training sessions and access to national and local regatta events. Our new location will be ideal to support the now established ‘On the Water’ national scheme for hard-to-reach communities. Our HQ will act as the feeder to this scheme, enabling us to increase our uptake from 20 to potentially 50. This in turn will have a positive impact for the local community; a safe and creative place for young people to grow, develop and learn new skills. Furthermore, it will offer opportunities for us to engage more with local civic events and be more visible and part of the wider community. We will be a beacon of hope a bridge of new activity between the docks, city airport and Newham council civic centre.TS Thunderer is a youth development organisation working with young people aged 10-17, situated in the borough of Newham. We use experiential waterborne adventure as our main method of enabling young people to learn life skills and have the opportunity to learn in how to be independent in a safe environment. We are a volunteer lead organisation offering opportunities to adults aged 18 and over.Boating offers the opportunity to learn soft skills that are vital in later life, for example communication, strategy, appreciation of risk and collaboration. We enable our young people to learn independently and in groups, through these activities be they domestic or strategic gives them the skills to be creative, resilient and leaders. We teach first aid, DofE, BTEC level 1&2, RYA accredited courses and the opportunity to attend leadership boards and present as though at interview.Our young people have the chance to go on national and international voyages where they have to live and work on a ship for a week- we feel this opportunity enables them to learn about themselves and a taste of working life. Affiliated to the national Sea Cadets our young people travel the length and breadth of the country meeting and training with other cadets and volunteers from all over. We are a huge surrogate family offering friendship and pastoral care not only for the cadets but our volunteers too.We offer two full uniforms to our cadets free of charge, our membership fees a minimal no more than £5 a month. Even though water sports are considered an elite sport, we offer a non-heritage pathway to sailing for all from all walks of life. Together with the main charity we focus on attracting young people from hard-to-reach communities and where better than Newham with such a diverse population.The product life of the shipping containers will be about 50 years, we feel in 50 years that we will have supported 2500 young people as a minimum. We will have offered alternative vocational opportunities and training to 1500 adult. Finally offering over 110,000 boating hours amounting to a minimum of 5000 boating qualifications. Help us change the opportunities available to hard-to-reach communities- support us in breaking the cycle of deprivation by offering opportunity and progression.

suzannah walker4 years ago Beckton Community Projects is a community organisation. We are generally volunteer led from the local community. We have several projects we are running for our community which include; Youth Club, Muay Thai Kick Boxing (Self defence), Planting project, Women's Yoga, Thursday Football and an annual community Fun-day. All our projects directly benefit the community. We believe its a good way to tackle anti-social behaviour and knife crime. It also helps with physical and mental health well being. We hope to bring community cohesion and tackle crime in our neighbourhood. The grant will help us purchase equipment and maintain the upkeep of all our projects. This means the young people are able to participate in activities which will help them grow, learn new skills and gain confidence in themselves. The grant will also help us provide workshops throughout the year so both young people and adults can benefit in gaining further knowledge. We have received feedback from Parents/Guardians and service users. Those who were less confident in the early sessions have been more vocal and participated in more activities and competitions. We are planning another annual community fun-day so families can come and enjoy a day full of fun activities and delicious food. Our previous community fun-day was a huge success. Over 800 people attended and enjoyed an amazing community event. All our content are available on our social media pages (Instagram/Facebook/Tiktok) and our website, becktoncommunityprojects.org.uk

James Edmunds4 years ago We will facilitate the setup and delivery of allotments shared by the community. The community plot with see approximately 40 people/families allocated their own growing space, with some shared beds. The community will then be supported to take over and run these spaces, creating a legacy for future generations. With a second allotment plot, we will create a Women's Wellness allotment as a safe space to garden and grow offering sensory elements as well as flowers, fruit and vegetables.We will run 4 inclusive sessions each week on each plot, engaging with at least 35 - 55 community members on a weekly basis. Communal herb gardens will be established - where participants are encouraged to share and help each other. The decision making process, design, development, delivery and maintenance will all be community led.This project will be delivered in the Beckton Allotments E6 behind ASDA. Jenny Mwangura4 years ago The Beckton Ward Panel are a group of Beckton residents who meet regularly with the Metropolitan Police Safer Neighbourhood Team and Council Representatives.Their aim is to work together to keep updated on what is happening in Beckton to help tackle and reduce crime and antisocial behaviour and improve community safety. The Panel is run by volunteers and is currently unfunded. Resident involvement and participation is essential to its success.This projects aim is to engage with residents at organised monthly "Litter Pick Walk About" events. As well as helping to keep Beckton litter free, the walkers will be led by a qualified walk leader and together they will identify, record and report community safety issues such as overhanging trees. dangerous footpaths, fly tipping, antisocial behaviour, and criminal activity. The walk will finish with refreshments and a chance to chat and socialise as a group.The project will help to improve the local environment and assist with the development and growth of this amazing community led panel. In turn building our community capacity and making our streets, roads and green spaces cleaner and safer for us all to enjoy.

Tina Cooper4 years ago Following the recent success of our Jubilee Celebrations, we propose monthly activity days on Beckton Park South field for families of the community. At our Jubilee picnic, the children thoroughly enjoyed the activities on the day and several asked if we could ‘do this all the time!’ We would require funding for reusable equipment for things such as obstacle races (markers, skipping ropes, hula hoops etc), sports equipment for team sports, play equipment for all ages and well as arts and crafts materials. The days would be organised and planned by volunteers of the community to ensure a safe and controlled environment with a planned programme of activities and free play.

Anonymous Participants4 years ago Our project aims to encourage the Beckton & Royal Docks community to look after our local nature reserve through outdoor learning sessions and events that promote care for our local parks through first hand experience.We will deliver free Forest School sessions to children aged 3- 11 years and their parent/carer, twice per week and during school term breaks in Beckton District Park South nature reserve— making quality outdoor education accessible to Newham families.We will also use the Community Assemblies funding to improve and maintain Beckton District Park South nature reserve by holding regular Litter Picks and Community Planting Days, open to the wider community.Through our sessions and community events we aim to: Build a cohesive local community Encourage families to spend more time outdoors Improve environmental awareness and build nature connection Improve children's social skills Improve children's physical/motor skills Transform Beckton District Park South from a place that attracts ASB to a well-loved and well-used local asset Curious by Nature is a local community interest company that brings together a diverse community of east London families connected by a love of learning and playing in nature. Joy-Caron Canter4 years ago Grass Routes will renovate, stitch together and activate a corridor of green/open spaces within the Royal Docks ward in Newham. The project will improve the green infrastructure of the ward/borough, enhancing biodiversity and increase access opportunities for residents to engage with nature by enhancing/creating publicly accessible green spaces for people and wildlife:FOOD GROWING: Community gardening, creating food growing spaces enabling local residents to learn to be more self-reliant. • TREE PLANTING: Plant and maintain trees, which will provide shade for wildlife and fauna• HABITATS: Improve habitats for invertebrates, birds, bugs, hedgehogs, butterflies and pollinators such as bees, creating a green corridor with a range of new habitats including hedge rows, providing wildlife corridors to find new food/water sources. We will turn grey into green creating parklets improving the area and increasing wildlife/biodiversity.• CLEAN UP: Clean up & litterpicks in local green spaces and parks• GREEN TRAINING: A green activities programme to support local people of all ages to access green spaces and engage with nature, providing regular learning opportunitiesSUSTAINABILITY & COMPOSTING: We will utilise grey water from butts and providing composting bins. The majority of the physical improvements will be natural and therefore self-sustaining.
