Kolsuma Miah•1 year ago Connect and Empower is a new community project for parents and carers of children with SEND in Newham. Families often face confusing systems, long waits and isolation — particularly those from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee (BAMER) backgrounds. Together with parents, we designed a programme that will provide:  12 workshops on SEND rights and school support. Workshops include the distribution of specialist, award-winning SEN resources to each family to use in the home to support their children's education.  10 wellbeing groups and 12 one-to-one counselling sessions.  15 peer mentors trained to guide at least 50 families.  6 financial and digital skills workshops Activities across five trusted Newham venues By the end of the year, 160 families will have taken part. Parents will feel more confident working with schools, stress levels will reduce, and families will be better equipped with financial and digital skills. Parents will also have resources and skills in supporting their children's education in an innovative way at home, involving the whole family. This is parents supporting parents — building safe spaces, peer networks and strong links to schools and services, so no SEND family in Newham has to feel alone.

We would love your support.

Internet Cafe for Older People

Kolsuma Miah•1 year ago Internet Café for older people helps address the local priority from the Manor Park Community Neighbourhood of Health and Wellbeing. The project will address this through tackling the issues of loneliness and isolation in the ageing population and its impact on mental and physical health. The project aims to create opportunities to connect, socialise and develop new networks for older people. In doing so, it will seek to reduce the feelings of isolation and loneliness amongst BAME residents in particular older people. The project will also seek to help the local NHS and social services to address other areas of health inequality by connecting these older people with critical services in an environment that they feel safe and secure. The other element of the project that will help in no small way is the provision of one hot meal for the day. This will ultimately reduce the impact of increased food insecurity because of the Cost-of-Living crisis, by reducing the cost of their weekly shopping and increasing their in-take of at least one hot and healthy meal for that day. There will be other impacts on their physical health through seated exercise and other activities to increase mobility.
