People Powered Places 8 months ago Youth Awareness, Confidence & Fitness ProgramThis project aims to empower young people in Canning Town through a unique combination of fitness, weightlifting, climbing, nutrition workshops, and mentoring. It will provide safe, structured, and positive activities for young residents aged 11–16 (with scope up to 21), helping them build both physical health and mental resilience.Newham is one of the most deprived boroughs in London, with high levels of childhood obesity and limited affordable opportunities for youth. Many families cannot access activities such as climbing or structured gym sessions due to financial barriers. This project will make those opportunities accessible and inclusive, giving young people a chance to thrive regardless of background.Participants will benefit from improved confidence, self-esteem, fitness, and life skills, while the wider community will benefit from more engaged, motivated, and healthier young people.By investing in local youth, this project will contribute to a stronger, safer, and more connected community, making Canning Town a better place to live for all residents.

People Powered Places 8 months ago This is the document created by our year 6 pupils to bid for the grant.Our idea is to be awarded £10k so we can get a climbing frame for the KS2 classes (Year 3 - Year 6). We would like to acquire this climbing frame so KS2 pupils can get more physical things to do during lunch and break which promotes health and wellbeing. Not only will this promote physical health but also emotional health because it will bring such joy and fun.This is good for health because this keeps children active, which is good for us and our bodies and for our well-being. Keeping healthy and fit is really good for our physical and mental well-being. We will need £10k, people to dig the ground and to build the frame. We will also need the headteacher’s permission for the frame! The KS2 climbing frame is going to take place in St. Luke’s Primary School. The children will be happier than ever with the new frame.Children will be happier. Children will also build confidence. Children will be more able to take risks. It will teach us to be resilient and push ourselves harder in a physical way.

People Powered Places 8 months ago The "Nabad iyo Nolol" (Peace in Life) project is an innovative initiative aimed at providing a vital safe space for minoritised men in Newham. This project directly addresses the community's pressing need for meaningful and tailored support. Building on the success of our "Shaah & Sheeko" and "Hear Me Out" programs for women, "Nabad iyo Nolol" will foster an inclusive environment where minoritised men can confront their unique challenges through peer counseling and group discussions.The initiative focuses on delivering comprehensive support prioritizing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. By addressing issues such as social isolation, health disparities, unemployment, and discrimination, we aim to empower participants through workshops on skill development, confidence-building, and personal advocacy related to housing and benefits.Led by individuals with lived experience, the project encourages men to share their stories and cultivate resilience within the group. Collaborating with external service providers, including the NHS, we will ensure participants are informed about available resources. Ultimately, "Nabad iyo Nolol" is a crucial step toward enhancing the well-being and health outcomes of minoritised men in Newham, reflecting our commitment to building a strong, resilient, and united community.

People Powered Places 8 months ago We aim to establish a football league and physical activities: 2 x afterschool clubs for 8-11-year-olds from Hallsville Primary School (1 x football, 1 x multisport) 3 x open community football sessions at Hallsville Primary School (1 x 8-11-year-olds, 1 x 11-13-year-olds, 1 x 14-16-year-olds) 1 x group fitness session at Lea Valley Ice Centre for 14-18 year-olds1 x learning for life sessions for 8-18-year-olds, based at E16. Participants will primarily come from Africa who are refugee Swahili-speaking living in Canningtown who are low-income and culturally diverse backgrounds, many of whom are currently less active or inactive and not engaged in grassroots football and physical activities. We will deliver this multisport camps at Hallsville Primary School for children aged 8-16. This will be 2 hours per day, 2 days a week across 32 weeks. Our sports sessions consist of physical fitness training, technical skill development, teambuilding games, matchplay and competitions (both internal competitions and external ones where we invite other community groups, football teams and our participants from our other delivery areas Newham. The last 15 minutes of sessions consist of group discussions about various topics including citizenship, stop and search, wellbeing and conflict reduction. Topics are decided by participants, project staff and our youth advisory board. During our learning for life sessions, children are supported with homework and revision, whilst also supporting those 15+ with college applications, work experience applications, CV writing, and job interview preparation. We will engage young people aged 8-18 who are from ethnic minority African refugee Swahili-speaking living Cannigtown. Many are economically disadvantaged, low attaining academically and at risk of exclusion and violence. We are an award-winning, user-led community organisation that delivers physical activities, sports and education programmes.

People Powered Places 8 months ago Sound Futures is a free, youth-led programme in Custom House, Silvertown and Beckton that combines music, mentoring and personal growth.Over nine months, 30 young people aged 16–21 will take part in weekly DJ and sound engineering workshops, confidence-building sessions and career visits to London City Airport. Mentors from House FM will guide them, and every participant will help plan and co-lead activities.The project was designed with 71 local young people and families, who told us they wanted something creative, meaningful and future-focused. One young person said: “We need somewhere to go that actually helps us grow—not just chill.”We will prioritise young people who are NEET, care leavers or SEND, alongside those at risk of exclusion, making sure no one is left behind.By the end of the programme, participants will have new skills, greater confidence and clearer goals for their future. Families and communities will also benefit from safer spaces, stronger role models and more positive opportunities for young people.

People Powered Places 8 months ago Following the success of our weekly sessions over the past year, we are excited to continue Rosebuds at Custom Made, where local ladies come together to connect, learn, and create. Funding will provide sewing machines, fabrics, and tools, allowing ladies to explore a wider range of projects and techniques, with sessions led by me and remaining free they allow for community connection, skill sharing, wellbeing, and mutual support. Designed to be inclusive, supportive, and fun, Rosebuds gives participants the opportunity to take ownership of their learning, share ideas, and build confidence, creativity, and meaningful connections within the community.

People Powered Places 8 months ago Voices of Newham is a youth-led music and wellbeing project designed to transform the lives of young people aged 11–25 in Canning Town and Custom House. Delivered at Community Links Youth Centre, the project offers a powerful alternative to the negative influences many young people face. At a time when drill music and postcode wars dominate, creating pressure, division, and unsafe environments, Voices of Newham provides a positive platform for creativity, connection, and community pride.Through weekly workshops in songwriting, rap, beat-making, recording, and performance, young people will gain access to professional music equipment, studios, and mentors who can guide them towards expressing themselves with uplifting, constructive, and socially conscious lyrics. Participants will learn to tell their own stories, build resilience, and become positive role models for their peers.Health & Wellbeing: Young people will develop coping tools for stress, anxiety, and trauma, while building confidence and self-esteem in a supportive, non-judgmental space.Youth Empowerment & Role Models: By learning creative and leadership skills, participants will be empowered to mentor others and show that young people can be a force for good.Community & Safety: Voices of Newham creates safe, inclusive spaces where postcode barriers are broken down, young people collaborate across divides, and residents come together through performances and showcases.By supporting Voices of Newham, residents will be helping to create a safer, stronger, and healthier community. Together, we can ensure Newham’s next generation grows up with pride, resilience, and positive voices that truly represent our borough.

People Powered Places 8 months ago Beats for Change is a youth-led creative project in Beckton and the Royal Docks that will use music and digital storytelling to give young people a stronger voice in the community.Over six months, around 20 young people aged 13–21 will work with local musicians and mentors to create original songs, short videos, and digital content that explore issues they face, such as mental health, community safety, and belonging. Young people will not just take part they will lead peer discussions, shape project themes, and help deliver the final showcase.The project will end with a community event at Britannia Village Hall, where residents can hear the music, see the creative work, and celebrate the achievements of local young people. Over 100 residents are expected to take part, building pride, unity, and stronger connections between young people and their neighbours.By offering free, positive opportunities, Beats for Change will build confidence, prevent crime, and improve wellbeing. It will show the strength and creativity of local young people and help make Beckton and the Royal Docks a safer and more inspiring place to live.

People Powered Places 8 months ago I’m one of your residents for 30 years.I have been working with Newham community for the 30 years living in newham, I havebeen starting doing a transition volunteer work for friends and people that needbecause when I come to England many from the a Portuguese colonies and Frenchcolonies they cound’t speak English, after I start to do some Comunity events for peopleto engage, I worked in schools and after 30 years I’m still doing the some work andeven have my own charity that we send goods to Africa always using My own Manet to pay the travel, garage, (all the expenses). had no help from the government/founds. I like to entertain and help people somethingthat I born with. I wold like to have your help so I can still carrion with my communitywork because this last day everything is getting so expensive that I have to reduce mytime doing good thinks for the community.
