Woodhouse Grove Car-Free and Play Streets Day

Juliet Allen •5 years ago This project will take place on a section of Woodhouse Grove in late summer (or early spring 2022 if Covid prevents sooner). It will comprise a Car Free and Play Streets Day run for and by the local community (ideally tying in with Global Car Free Day on/around 22 September). It will benefit residents of Woodhouse Grove, Lincoln Road, Shelley Avenue, Byron Avenue, Wordsworth Road and Tennyson Avenue, as well as people passing though the area to get to Plashet Park and the high street. The Community Day itself will benefit an estimated 500 people, with a further 1,500 being benefitted by the longer-term impacts on care for local environment, increased cycling, reduced emissions and improved air quality. The project will require closing part of the road to through traffic, prior moving of all the cars parked on the street and engagement with community. The day will include a children’s entertainer (music/entertainer/clown/travelling theatre); PedalMe Cargo cyclist group to take residents on cycle journeys around the local area, to understand the joys and benefits of cycling; Dr Bike to come and have a stand to take a look and repair local residents’ cycle issues and get them back on the road; and Provision of high visibility vests and anklets free for local residents.

Cycle infrastructure improvements and safety & confidence training for all

Juliet Allen •5 years ago This idea is suggesting improving cycle infrastructure through safe, separated cycle lanes (e.g. using bollards/raised kerbs) and places to lock up bikes through Manor ParkIn addition, *FREE* cycle safety training to be available to new cyclists. This could target specific groups e.g. women’s cycle safety training workshops, young people’s cycle safety training workshops, workshops taught in community languages. Air quality in Newham is the worst in the whole of the UK Cycling is 10 times more important than electric car use for reaching net-zero cities (link) Cyclists are exposed to less pollution than people in cars, pedestrians and people on buses (link) Aside from the initial bike and maintenance costs, cycling is free, convenient, and a great, low-impact form of exercise The main reason people don’t cycle in London is safety concerns and this is particularly bad in Newham  Romford Road and High Street North (i.e. the main avenues through Manor Park) have no cycling infrastructure whatsoever (i.e. no lanes, no awareness infrastructure, limited places to securely store bikes) People that do cycle in Newham often cycle on pavements which is hazardous to other pedestrians  This idea is suggesting improving cycle infrastructure through safe, separated cycle lanes (e.g. using bollards/raised kerbs) and places to lock up bikes is essential. Alongside this, cycling needs to be made more accessible to all groups through awareness raising and *FREE* cycle safety training available to new cyclists. This could target specific groups e.g. women’s cycle safety training workshops, young people’s cycle safety training workshops and workshops taught in community languages.

Safer and friendlier streets for everyone

Juliet Allen •5 years ago This idea is to make safer and more welcoming streets and public space for everyone in Manor Park. Neighbourhoods should be places that prioritise the people who live and spend time there. For too long they have been designed around cars, leaving less space for walking, cycling and spending time in; things that make our lives better and add to our happiness.Car-dominated spaces create congestion and damage our environment and health. Newham has the most polluted air in the UK. Emissions harm people who are already disadvantaged the most. Manor Park could – and should – be designed with everyone’s health and wellbeing in mind, rather than cars. This proposal suggests introducing the following measures, as appropriate, to make Manor Park’s streets better, cleaner and safer for everyone: • Footways made wider and more accessible for wheelchair and buggy users• Reduced speed limits• Planters • Benches • Mini biodiversity gardens • Protected cycle lanes on all roads, especially main roads• Restricted through traffic• School streets closed to vehicles• Streets closed to vehiclesThese measures could be implemented with help from expert organisations such as Sustrans (https://www.sustrans.org.uk/). We need to create an East Ham that connects us to each other, to the facilities we need, and where everyone can thrive without having to use a car. We need sociable places where friends and facilities are a short walk away, and it’s easy and pleasant to travel beyond our neighbourhood. We need places with clean air and green spaces where everyone has the choice to walk, cycle, scoot or wheel safely to school, work and around their local area. These suggestions will help us to achieve those goals.
