East Ham Farmers Market

Hajera Khan•1 year ago The East Ham Farmers Market project aims to provide fresh, locally sourced food to the public while fostering a sense of community and supporting local farmers and artisans. Located in East Ham, this market serves as a hub for people to access high-quality produce, dairy, meats, baked goods, and other handmade items. The market is designed to be inclusive and open to all, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and reducing food waste. The project seeks to expand its offerings by adding extra stalls that focus on unique or niche products such as organic herbs, homemade preserves, and plant-based alternatives. Additionally, garden stalls will be introduced to promote urban gardening, providing people with the tools and knowledge to grow their own food at home. These stalls will offer everything from seedlings to gardening tips, encouraging a greener, more self-sufficient community. The market will rely on volunteers to help with setup, management, and assisting customers, creating opportunities for local residents to get involved. Volunteers will also help run workshops on topics such as sustainable living, food education, and gardening.Ultimately, the purpose of this project is to create a vibrant community space that promotes healthier living, supports local agriculture, and engages residents in hands-on activities that benefit both individuals and the environment.

Support for Chess Project

Hajera Khan•1 year ago I am proposing to start a community chess club at East Ham Library, held on Sunday afternoons, open to both children and adults. The club aims to create an inclusive, welcoming environment where people of all ages can come together to learn, play, and improve their chess skills. Chess promotes critical thinking, strategic planning, and patience, skills beneficial for all participants both academically and socially.By hosting this club in the library, we will utilise a safe, accessible community space that encourages learning and interaction across generations. The club will engage children, young people, and adults who may not have access to structured extracurricular activities, fostering social connections, confidence, and cognitive development. We are applying for funding to provide essential resources such as chess clocks and membership chips. These materials will enhance the playing experience by introducing official timing and encouraging commitment and participation through membership incentives. The resources will also allow us to organise friendly competitions and tournaments, making the club engaging and motivating for players of all skill levels. This project benefits the community by promoting educational enrichment, social cohesion, and healthy competition in a positive environment. It offers a constructive alternative to screen time for children and a stimulating social activity for adults.Funding support is crucial to cover the cost of these resources, ensuring the club can offer high-quality equipment and membership benefits at no cost to participants, making it accessible to all families and individuals in East Ham.

Community Roots: Health, Participation and Shared Learning at Folkstone Road

Hajera Khan•10 months ago Folkestone Road Allotment Association is launching Flourish Together, a resident-led project designed to improve health, wellbeing, and community connection through gardening, shared learning, and local participation.Located in East Ham, our site is supported by the London Borough of Newham and home to over 150 plot holders. We want to transform our old allotment shop into an accessible sharing and learning zone—a space where local people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can come together to learn, grow, and support one another in a safe and welcoming environment. The project will offer a regular programme of health and wellbeing activities, including gardening for mental health, healthy eating workshops, and gentle outdoor exercise. We’ll also run community development and participation sessions, such as growing tutorials, skills-sharing, family learning days, and cultural food-growing exchanges that reflect the diversity of our neighbourhood. We are applying to People Powered Places to help us make this vision a reality—by improving physical access, creating a space suitable for year-round use, and coordinating inclusive, resident-led activities. The funding will enable us to involve more local people—especially older residents, young people, and those with disabilities—who may currently feel excluded from public green spaces.Flourish Together is more than a project—it’s an investment in people, place, and purpose. It puts residents at the heart of shaping a greener, healthier, more connected community for East Ham. With your support, we can grow something truly lasting together."

The Bright Futures Club

Hajera Khan•10 months ago The Bright Futures Club (TBFC) is a successful dynamic after-school program which has supported local school and residents of the community in East Ham in the LBN since initially proposed in the previous year. Our mission is the continued financial support in this project and its overall development for children while empowering parents through a unique blend of physical, creative, and digital learning opportunities. Our program is structured around three key pillars:Physical Well-being: Engaging activities such as fitness, yoga, and movement sessions help children build healthy habits while offering parents a chance to relieve stress and focus on self-care.Creative Expression: Through art, music, and drama, families explore emotions, boost confidence, and enjoy meaningful bonding time in a supportive environment.Digital Skills Development: Practical IT sessions (computer basics, typing, Microsoft Word) equip children for school. Parallel parent workshops build digital confidence to use online platforms and support their children. With most homework now online, parents need the right tools and skills to engage effectively. We advocate for a joined-up, multigenerational approach to education and well-being. By combining adult learning with children’s after-school enrichment, The Bright Futures Club contributes to a healthier, more connected, and future-ready community.

Thrive in Newham

Hajera Khan•1 year ago Our proposed project, is designed to provide meaningful opportunities for residents in East Ham to connect, learn, and thrive. We recognise that Newham is one of the most diverse and vibrant boroughs in London, but also one where many communities face challenges around social isolation, limited access to affordable activities, and barriers to employment or personal development. Our project responds directly to these needs by offering inclusive programmes that bring people together, build skills, and promote wellbeing. Purpose of the Project The purpose of the project is to create a safe, accessible, and engaging space where local people can participate in activities tailored to their needs. These will include workshops, training sessions, mentoring, creative projects, and community events. We aim to improve confidence, foster stronger community connections, and open pathways to education, volunteering, or employment. We will ensure our workshops and activities informative and reaching those who might otherwise miss out. Community Benefits The project will directly benefit East Ham residents by reducing isolation, encouraging active participation, and supporting individuals to gain new skills. Families will have opportunities to engage together, young people will be able to explore positive pathways, and adults will access training and support that enhance their prospects. Importantly, the project will celebrate the borough’s diversity by offering culturally inclusive activities and creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to learn from one another.

Community Wellness & Skills Hub

Hajera Khan•10 months ago The Community Wellness & Skills Hub will create a safe, inclusive weekly space where residents of all ages can improve wellbeing, learn new skills, and connect with others. Running from March 2026 to February 2027, the hub will provide practical, affordable activities designed around priorities raised by local people.Wellness sessions such as yoga, walking groups, and stress-relief workshops will support mental and physical health. Skills exchange workshops will cover digital literacy, financial confidence, DIY, and creative arts, enabling residents to learn from facilitators and each other. Community kitchen days will bring people together to cook and share healthy meals, tackling food insecurity and encouraging cultural exchange.Young people will play a key role by co-leading activities and producing a community podcast, gaining leadership and employability skills. Older residents and carers will benefit from new opportunities for social contact and learning, helping to reduce loneliness.By combining professional input with resident and youth involvement, the hub will build pride, resilience, and stronger connections across the neighbourhood. The project will leave a legacy of healthier lifestyles, shared skills, and more engaged residents, making the local area a better, safer, and more supportive place to live.

Newham’s Beauty & Heritage: 60 Years of Style & Identity

Hajera Khan•10 months ago This 12-month, community-led project will celebrate PALOP culture whilst tackling the cost of living and improving wellbeing. We will run 12 free bilingual workshops (covering haircare, braiding, skincare, make-up and wellness) between March and October. These will be co-delivered by salon owners, elders and young women. In November, we will produce a digital archive and short film recording the stories of 30 elders. Finally, in February, we will hold a large showcase event for 200+ residents, with performances and cultural demonstrations. By the end of the project, at least 40 residents will have completed all 12 workshops, half of participants will be saving money or earning extra income from their new skills, 30 elders’ stories will be captured and shared through schools, libraries and Newham Heritage Month, and 80% of participants will report greater confidence and wellbeing. This project will bring people together across generations, help residents to reach their potential, respond directly to cost-of-living challenges, and preserve cultural heritage for the future. It is the first bilingual PALOP beauty and heritage initiative in Newham, designed and led by women from within the community. Whilst PALOP families are at the heart of the project, sessions will be open to all residents, building cohesion across our diverse borough

Craft Central - Adult Craft Club

Hajera Khan•1 year ago Craft Central is a vibrant, community-led group based in East Ham Library that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds through the shared joy of creativity. Our weekly sessions provide a welcoming space where members engage in a variety of crafts, including knitting, crochet, card-making, embroidery, and seasonal decorations. The group encourages learning, skill-sharing, and social interaction in a relaxed and inclusive environment. The purpose of Craft Central is to combat loneliness, promote mental well-being, and strengthen community ties through creative activity. Participants benefit not only from developing practical craft skills, but also from the opportunity to connect with others, build friendships, and gain a sense of purpose and belonging. The group is especially valuable for older adults, carers, and those experiencing social isolation, providing a consistent and supportive social outlet. I currently get referrals from Newham Social Prescribers who are able to encourage residents to the craft club, this helps there mental wellbeing and supports their social network. Community Benefit and Reason for Funding:Funding will help sustain and expand the group’s activities by covering essential materials, tools, refreshments, and the occasional guest facilitator for skill-based workshops. With support, we can also increase outreach to local residents who would benefit from participating, including those referred by local health and wellbeing services.By supporting Craft Central, you are investing in a low-cost, high-impact initiative that nurtures community resilience, promotes intergenerational connection, and enhances the emotional well-being of its members. The group is already established and well-attended, with clear, demonstrated value. With your funding, we hope to continue growing our impact and ensure the group remains accessible and welcoming to all.

Define Yourself! (DY!)

Hajera Khan•1 year ago Define Yourself! Provides a set of tools for professionals and local residents that offer an insight and give everyone the permission to make changes in their lives that they need to. Define Yourself! addresses domestic violence and trauma, and opens up sensitive areas such as Womb Trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) to enhance the understanding and complexities of people experiencing abusive relationships at home and outside of the home. My masters thesis, How Women Escape the Self-Imposed Controls of Marriage, where I looked at the role of patriarchy, culture, religion and self-imposed control in the decision-making processes of women in abusive relationships, was the catalyst for Define Yourself! It proved if women knew they were not sinning i.e. doing something against their Lord, the Clergy and their elders, they undoubtedly made decisions that were healthy for themselves and their children. My participants knew nothing of DV, Coercive Control, Narcissism, the courts, social worker roles and how to manage education. With the information I imparted, they were able to free themselves completely and all have been successful.  I invite you to visit: www.inshiraa.com

Lets Make it Happen

Hajera Khan•1 year ago I am applying for funding to start a community wellbeing programme for people living with Cerebral Palsy (CP), inspired by my own lived experience with CP and multiple health challenges. As someone who truly understands the physical and emotional impact of this condition, I want to create a safe, supportive space where individuals with CP can come together, take part in activities that support their wellbeing, and feel empowered in their journey. The purpose of this project is to promote physical and mental wellness through gentle stretching, light weight training with dumbbells, guided exercises, and open conversations about health and personal experiences. I also want to include motivational sessions, where I share my own story — the challenges I’ve faced, the ways I’ve managed pain and mobility, and the strategies I’ve used to stay motivated and positive. By sharing my journey, I hope to inspire others to find strength in theirs. This project will benefit the community by reducing isolation, improving physical health, and building confidence among participants. It will also provide an opportunity for people with CP to connect, share knowledge, and support each other in a welcoming environment.
