Jessica Craig1 year ago Bonny Downs Community Association (BDCA) needs £20,000 to fund a part-time Youth Lead to deliver weekly activities for young people in East Ham. With the help of sessional youthworkers and tutors, they will run free weekly sessions over two evenings a week including: football on the MUGA at Flanders Field, gym sessions in the pavilion with a personal trainer, calming crafts to support mental health, and drama classes led by a local actor who was in Eastenders. We already have match funding for six month’s activity costs, and the new Youth Lead will work with young people to find funds for more. BDCA has a great track record as part of a Newham-commissioned youthwork consortium since 2021. Last year in partnership with another local charity, we delivered 796 hours of youthwork to 599 young people in East Ham. Funding cuts mean we are rebuilding from scratch – and we hope you can help us. This is important because there’s no other youth club in East Ham, and young people need a positive alternative to being unsupervised on the street after school. This fully inclusive project will improve their health, wellbeing, and skills and help them feel part of the community.

Jessica Craig5 years ago This project will improve a well-used eco-friendly Community Garden in East Ham. It will do this by running weekly garden maintenance workshops for people moving on from homelessness, referred by the charity NEWway. Participants in the workshops will learn new skills, and they will contribute to the community by helping to repair and maintain the garden, and rejuvenate it after Covid. Working with an experienced gardener, they will help make new signs and wildlife-friendly bird houses, bug hotels and ladybird towers that will entrance local children.The Community Garden is on the corner of Flanders Field (accessed via Melbourne Road or Wellington Road). It runs free school sessions, and gardening sessions and events for people of all ages and backgrounds, including annual celebrations for Eid, Diwali and Christmas. The food grown in the garden is shared among the volunteers and donated to the nearby Food Bank. This project covers gardening workshops for 12 homeless adults 8 hours a week for a year, in which they will make repairs and improvements to the garden. Successful participants can go on to paid work with NEWlife gardening social enterprise. The funding will also cover free Gardening Workshops for families on Fridays and Saturdays.
