What is People Powered Places?

People Powered Places is Newham Council’s flagship participatory budgeting programme, where you get to decide how funding is spent locally, this is your chance to make a real difference in your community.

Where Does the Funding Come From?

These funds are collected through the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (NCIL) from new developments in the borough. They support community projects aimed at improving local neighbourhoods.

How Does It Work?

People Powered Places runs on a two-year cycle, starting in June 2025 and finishing in June 2027.

What has happened so far?

  • The 2025/27 cycle launched on 3 June 2025
  • Between June and July 2025, 844 attended an Our Ideas event to decide local priorities and discuss potential project ideas. Over 2,900 residents chose local priorities at events, online and in libraries. You can see your neighbourhood's priorities on your neighbourhood page.
  • Between July and September 2025, we received 474 funding applications from across the borough! These were shortlisted by Working Group members to ensure they met local priorities, and Council services ran a feasibility check on all projects.
  • Over November 2025, 435 projects went to The Big Vote. Over 2,000 residents attended a Big Vote event, held across Newham.
  • Over December 2025, we are verifying the votes and will announce successful projects in March 2026.
