Description
We propose a natural play space in Forest Gate North, on Wanstead Flats (off Capel Road), co-designed with local families. Using natural materials such as logs, boulders, willow tunnels, sand, and balance beams, it will provide a safe, stimulating environment to climb, swing, explore, and socialise, while respecting the natural environment we all cherish on the Flats.
With over 1,000 children living nearby—including pupils at Woodgrange Infant and Godwin Junior Schools—there is a clear need for nearby play. This part of the Flats currently offers no climbing or play opportunities, and the walk to Dames Road playground is often too far for young children, especially after school when they are tired or hungry. Our project directly addresses this gap for families living in the streets off Capel Road and beyond.
Benefits include:
- Child development: Boosts balance, coordination, confidence, and social skills.
- Health & wellbeing: Encourages outdoor activity for children and families.
- Community connection: A hub for families and neighbours.
- Environmental engagement: Fosters respect for nature.
- Neighbourhood pride: A space residents value and protect.
This project will transform the lives of local families and honours children’s right to play.
