Tree Pit Adoption Scheme

From "Manor Park Community Assemblies 2022"

Go to the project

Leveraging positive experience from a adjacent ward (Forest Gate, https://newhamco-create.co.uk/en/ideas/make-the-most-of-what-we-ve-got, @theflowerstarter on insta) and other boroughs (below) the aim is to get businesses, communities and households to adopt a tree pit close to them or close to somewhere they work in the local area.

Depending on the pit, either a mini-garden can be installed around the pit or just a packet of seeds provided.

By engaging local people to take care of just one tree pit it means the workload is manageable. Taking care of undesirable public spaces discourages fly tipping and general dog waste. At the ward (or even borough) sale it will improve the overall green footprint.

The great thing about greening is that it knows no boundaries – young or old, woman or man, any nationality can enjoy a garden that takes place of a neglected area that attracts rubbish. By starting a project that works in our public spaces it also ensures that everyone can have access and receive benefit from the scheme.

Successful examples:

Redbridge - (The scheme is already in place for 4 years) https://www.redbridge.gov.uk/news/september-2021/adopt-a-tree-pit-and-bring-redbridge-neighbourhoods-into-bloom, with more 1300 pits adopted

Plaistow (community driven) https://www.plaistowsouthbiglocal.org.uk/green-spaces/adopt-a-tree-pit/

(please note that I'm re-using the elements of the last year submission)

Such a simple thing to do and an easy way to add some greenery and improve biodiversity to the area! Love this idea
