Description

My name is Terry Regan; I run a weekly group session supporting mental wellbeing. I hope to expand upon this work by establishing a regular podcast series that will air across my social media platforms - reaching a wider audience and raising awareness.

Sadly suicide rates among men continue to increase. It is estimated that 12 men lose their life to suicide everyday. Men are still grappling with damaging and outmoded stereotypes of masculinity. As a result men have struggled and continue to struggle with emotive self-expression, they feel unable to share their feelings and thoughts. I am determined to break the stigma and this vicious cycle, believing empathetic conversation and active listening holds the key to a more understanding culture.

I have lived in Custom House for nearly sixty years and care deeply about this area and its community. I have set up this project to combat these issues and bring the community together. I myself have struggled in the past and found it difficult to access support for mental health. TalktoTerry aims to remedy this gap, to be a compassionate ear and secure base for anyone in need.

Can't think of anyone with better experience and drive than Terry to work on this project on men and their mental health. The funding would allow Terry to continue and expand this great work for a collective that usually falls on the sidelines when having these important conversations. The ramifications of this then reverberate through the rest of society in many ways, being able to have honest and meaningful conversations on the topic of mental health with men makes a great difference.

Terry puts a huge amount of his personal time into supporting men to talk about their mental health, something that is very important (and very challenging to do in a meaningful way). I have full faith that Terry will use this funding very wisely and a lot of good impact will be made with a community that is often left out or doesn't feel comfortable to take part in such activities.

Terry has created and solidified a very valuable forum to help people and create a environment for people of all social levels to have a safe space. Mental health awareness has never been more important and to expand this type of awareness and support via different platforms that can be accessible to all that could require this help and support can only be a positive thing. This project has helped people's lives and in my opinion is heavily worthy of funding so this good work in the Newham community and hopefully in future further afield to continue and thrive to carrying on othering support that is not always easy to come by.

Terry is an outstanding role model for young people in our community. He consistently provides a safe, inclusive environment where individuals feel heard, valued, and empowered to express themselves. As a well-respected and trusted figure in the Custom House area, Terry plays a vital role in supporting residents through a wide range of initiatives. His dedication, leadership, and deep community impact make him an ideal candidate for support. I fully endorse this project and strongly believe Terry’s continued work deserves recognition and funding.

I have been a member of TalktoTerry for over 3 years now. It is so important for my mental health to know that this group are available everyday to talk to especially being a pensioner living on my own. My family members are also linked to this group and say what a wonderful group it is. Long may it live, we so need this.

I’ve known Terry for many years through working on his estate during its regeneration. His hard work and positive attitude are truly inspiring. At a time when so many people are struggling with their mental health — especially men who often feel they can’t speak up or show their emotions — Terry provides a safe space for them to open up. It’s been amazing to see how much of a difference this has made. Watching his growth and the positive impact he’s had within the community has been truly beautiful. Wishing you all the best.

I've known Terry for several years now, first in a professional capacity and now as a friend. I've seen the difference his work is making to so many people's lives. Terry is passionate about the work he does and is always friendly and approachable. Terry always makes time for a friendly chat and his daily WhatsApp messages are a great help and source of inspiration to the group. His work fills a much needed space. TalktoTerry is a much needed community project during a period when Custom House is going through huge changes. Along with the Custom House Bookshop, Terry makes it possible for people to get together and share their problems and issues and find a way through life's everyday issues. The podcast is a great idea and will help the project's reach - not everyone can attend T2T's in person meetings. Best wishes, Howard Mendick
