Description

The Creative Exchange is a vibrant intergenerational craft programme that brings together older residents (50+) and young adults (16–25) in Silvertown to learn, create, and connect. Using creativity as a bridge, the project tackles loneliness, strengthens wellbeing, and builds trust across generations.

Morning sessions provide older residents with welcoming spaces to explore traditional crafts like sewing, crochet, and embroidery. In the afternoons, intergenerational workshops spark collaboration and innovation, blending traditional skills with modern techniques such as Cricut cutting, 3D printing, and upcycling.

Participants will produce beautiful, tangible creations — quilts, textiles, and upcycled artworks — proudly showcased in public exhibitions, celebrating the neighbourhood’s talent and creativity. Volunteers, trained in safeguarding and facilitation, will lead sessions and mentor new participants, ensuring the programme thrives long-term.

Through partnerships with UEL, Newham Sixth Form College, Age UK, Housing21 , and ReSpace, The Creative Exchange will empower individuals, strengthen community bonds, and bring generations together. By sharing skills, stories, and experiences, the project transforms craft into a tool for connection, confidence, and community pride, making Newham a stronger, more vibrant place to live.

This project speaks to what our neighbourhood needs. So many older residents feel isolated, and young people often don’t have these opportunities to connect. The mix of traditional skills with modern ones is inspiring. I can see this becoming a space where people feel valued, supported, and proud of what they create
