Custom House is an isolated area that is one of the poorest and most socially deprived districts in the country.
Newham Info confirms this assessment;
The Custom House Bookshop would like to build on the success of the £10,000 grant received lasted year that established the bookshop in temporary 'Pop Up' premises at 3, Freemasons Road E16 3AR to implement 'The Acid Project'.
This is a free series of events, activities and facilities that will allow and promote;

in line with the Newham Council Social Integration Strategy.
With a quarter of the residents being aged 0-15, one of the largest groups in any district in London, there will be an emphasis on provision for children and youth, as well as for the vulnerable residents and the undocumented migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
Immediately established as a community hub, the bookshop already hosts the very popular Crafting sessions every Saturday for two hours and the 'Cuppa and a Chat' sessions every Wednesday to address issues such as loneliness, isolation and depression that affect residents.
