Description

I am proposing to start a community chess club at East Ham Library, held on Sunday afternoons, open to both children and adults. The club aims to create an inclusive, welcoming environment where people of all ages can come together to learn, play, and improve their chess skills. Chess promotes critical thinking, strategic planning, and patience, skills beneficial for all participants both academically and socially.

By hosting this club in the library, we will utilise a safe, accessible community space that encourages learning and interaction across generations. The club will engage children, young people, and adults who may not have access to structured extracurricular activities, fostering social connections, confidence, and cognitive development.

We are applying for funding to provide essential resources such as chess clocks and membership chips. These materials will enhance the playing experience by introducing official timing and encouraging commitment and participation through membership incentives. The resources will also allow us to organise friendly competitions and tournaments, making the club engaging and motivating for players of all skill levels.

This project benefits the community by promoting educational enrichment, social cohesion, and healthy competition in a positive environment. It offers a constructive alternative to screen time for children and a stimulating social activity for adults.

Funding support is crucial to cover the cost of these resources, ensuring the club can offer high-quality equipment and membership benefits at no cost to participants, making it accessible to all families and individuals in East Ham.
