Stay Strong, Stay Young

From "People Powered Forest Gate & Maryland - Finished"

Go to the project

Proposed budget

GBP 5,000

Description

Rip Fitness recognises that one in every five residents of Newham is over the age of fifty, and its mission is to educate this demographic about the age-related changes that occur in the structure and function of muscles, as well as how the addition of resistance exercise may help avoid frailty while also improving mobility and independence. My project will have a total of forty-eight fitness sessions held throughout the year. During these sessions, participants will alternate between sitting and standing exercises, primarily focusing on upper and lower body training and exercises focusing on balance. Eleven workshops on the importance of strength, flexibility, and physiotherapy for the treatment of age-related ailments and dementia will also be held during the course of the year. These fitness programmes and workshops will encourage involvement with meaningful dialogue through the shared experience of cultural activities, remembering, and an atmosphere that is beneficial to older people to enhance their health and well-being and decrease feelings of loneliness. Funding for this community project will go towards compensating staff members who are specialists in their disciplines to assist me in organising and leading these sessions and workshops.

This project has seeked permission from Forest Gate library to run sessions, if successful

An absolute fantastic idea. Everyone should have access to fitness regardless of their age. Group sessions are also a great way for people to make new friends.

Don't know if anyone from newham council is reading this but there are too many similar projects. There is :- 1 ) Radha Krishna social club for elderly Hindus at one of their temples - yoga, discussions 2) Milap social club for elderly Hindu women - yoga, exercise, music, outings 3) Companions social club for elderly Muslims at their mosque - exercise, health discussions, hot meals 4 ) Silver Connections social club for elderly Asian women at the library - yoga, hot meals 5) Stay Strong Stay Young strength classes for elderly people at the library - exercise, health discussions, cultural activities 6) Seniors Got Talent creative workshops for elderly people - health discussions, music, art How is the council going to ensure that nearly one quarter of the funding won't be spent on 6 similar projects? And like every year there are multiple greening projects too (7).

@Jay Smith Sorry the amount wasnt there before its only just popped up. How is this £5000 being broken down just roughly? You say it will pay for the staff members assisting you. So are you not being paid out of it? Is 48 sessions and 11 workshops workable? My friend went to Stella's senior movements class last year and it doesn't sound like there were anywhere near the same amount of sessions for the same funding. How many spaces at each session and workshop? All free yeah? What are the cultural activities?

@Jay Smith I would still like to know these answers. I'm not going to give my vote to anyone who can't or won't explain how my money will be spent, or anwer these questions about what the project actually is.

@Jay Smith Still no answers. So much for community engagement.
@Jay Smith Good afternoon sorry for delay in getting back to I've been away and have just returned. The sessions are free for the community and the £5000 is going towards weekly sessions and monthly workshops with various professional such as physio therapist. So this is not just a normal fitness program.
