Shine a Light

From "Forest Gate & Maryland Community Assemblies 2022"

Go to the project

‘Shine a Light’ will improve the community spaces in The Gate Library on Woodgrange Road which are currently increasingly used for exhibitions, classes, workshops and events. Three spaces currently have a picture hanging system. However – there is no dedicated lighting – so pictures and exhibition materials are badly lit by the general lighting within the building. The project is to specify (in consultation with existing exhibitors) and install a lighting system to compliment the hanging system and provide adjustable lighting for exhibitions, purchase additional picture frames and exhibition equipment.

We aim to improve the quality of these spaces in the Gate; to show that local people’s contribution is valued. This will be a valuable improvement to a facility that is already accessible in many meanings of the term. This will encourage community-led heritage, culture and creative projects to exhibit the results of their work and increase pride and recognition of people’s achievements. Through these public exhibitions and dialogues, the issues and concerns, hopes and fears of our community can be presented. Often arts and culture provide a way to discuss and shine a light on topics that can severely affect our lives or bring us joy. Improving The Gate as a community exhibition space gives a platform for that discussion and secures the spaces for increased community use.

Update re installation of the gallery light:

Gallery lighting has been installed in Forest Gate Cafe area in October 2022 to enhance the current exhibition space.

Launch Event 2.2.2023 - Attended by up to 70 people.

A *very* bright idea ;) We really need more projects like this to amplify the good stuff people *already* do around here.

I know Hazel for years now and all the projects I had the pleasure to be part as volunteers/helpers have been unique. Hazel always know how to involve all the Community and create something remarkable just think of the big knitted Christmas tree that was shining opposite to the station bringing a smile in a cold winter or the spring one where the children could make their own special insect for decorating and all the knitting ladies come together to transform this beautiful art piece under Hazel director like an orchestra play an impeccable spring concert under its lovely maestro. Shine a light is just another of her fantastic project that she can pull out of her magic creativity hat that this time will shine the Forest library.

Brilliant idea- we are such an artistic area full of talent, it would be great to have a serious bit of space to show it all off to locals!
@Julie Featherstone thanks... and the great thing about the Gate is it is accessible.
