Save Our Street Planters

GBP 4,800

Description

Completion update - December 2024

The project has ended up being a complete joy. It has engaged members of the public who have appreciated what I’m trying to do. Many have stopped and congratulated myself and others, while we work on the planters, but I have also received texts and emails. A group of children from a local mosque helped over a weekend and local shopkeepers offered refreshments like drinks and fruit to them.

The local community have also been able to support by propagating plants, assisting in the physically building of signs, creating designs for the signs, planting up and clearing the planters, whatever the weather.

Now that the planters have been be cleared and replanted, they are easier to maintain. They will only need a bit of cutting back, weeding and clearing from time to time. Apart from 1 planter, outside the Coop, the litter issue has much improved.

The main outcomes are that the high street looks much smarter and people are no long wound up by the state of the planters.

a)	Cigarettes - Soup tins placed in the planters. Some were attached to pieces of wood to stop them being taken. This worked ok when initially installed, but went rusty re-ally quickly and many were stolen. I then tried with sealed colourful pots, drilled on-to the side of the planters - this has worked well but difficult to clean out. Finally I have bought some proper cigarette bins to attach to the side of the planters.

I have experimented with signs and found that those made by children have helped with less littering.

I have also designed a cigarette bin, which has taken a while to establish but people are now using it instead of the planters.

My Plan

Our street planters need to be maintained, if not the results can be worse than not having them at all - we've all seen them full of rubbish and dead plants. Instead of inspiring those walking past, it can give a sense that a community really doesn't care.

I plan to change this by investigating the origins of planters in the area and either offer support to those who have worked hard to put them in place, or simply take over the maintenance. I will do this with a network of corporate companies, schools and local charitable organisations or cultural groups, in order to make it a sustainable operation. I will organise monthly maintenance sessions, providing equipment and refreshments for all taking part.

My vision is to create something a little different for the planters, they could be themed and used to educate people about nature, highlight different cultures, herbal remedies, or simply promote good causes in the area. The bases of the planters could also be used to hold artwork from schools or other local organisations. It would be lovely to create something that catches the eye and makes people smile as they walk past.

Integral to the whole project is the participation of the local community, it will give them a chance to meet new, like minded people and to be part of something worthwhile.

For the amount of £4,800 please support me to improve the environment in some small way.

This project is subject to permission being granted by the owner of the premises if successful

Rather than planters, perhaps trees would be a better, more economical and sustainable solution? Trees help improve air quality by removing pollution annually including harmful PM10/PM2.5 particulates and NO2 roadside emissions as well as making our streets more beautiful and encouraging walking and cycling. Trees also create a vital habitat for London’s wildlife, reduce flood risk and help to tackle climate change through absorbing and storing carbon. In a 2020 study, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) ranked all UK areas by the average amount of tiny toxic particles (known as PM2.5) found in the air over one year. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that any reading of PM2.5 above 10 exceeds its guidelines. Newham has an average annual PM2.5 reading of 13. Newham has the worst levels of air pollution in London and indeed the whole of the UK
Hello, thanks for your thoughts. I totally agree about trees and all the benefits they bring us. I am not trying to get more planters , I would deal with those we have and do something a bit different with them. Supported by the community garden I’m hoping to put a sustainable approach to them together. Thanks again for your thoughts. All the best Fiona
Hi there, Although the planters are a nice idea, IMO they are not essential and most of them are becoming full of rubbish. I just wonder how much they will cost to have them removed. Sorry to be a bit neg..
Hello Wendy, I'm meeting with the Council soon and will have a walk around all our planters. I am definitely not promoting more raised beds, I am only looking at improving what we have and doing something a bit different with them. I am keen to bring different parts of the community together including schools and charities, to maintain them going forward - perhaps 'Adopt a planter'. I will ask about removal costs too, but many of them are there to stop people parking on the pavements and to block off the roads. It would be nice if they were a little more interactive and educational. If I get funding I will do my best to improve them and how they are seen going forward. Thanks for your thoughts. Fiona

Good luck for this project. I agree that planters full of rubbish are really an eye sore.
@Matteo Arico Thank you, much appreciated. I will do my best to improve things if I get the funding. All the best Fiona
            Thank you Suz :)

Is there anyone on newham council reading these comments? Yet again there are lots of greening projects. Are you going to do anything to ensure that 40% of the fund doesn't just go on more greening projects? At least they're mostly different to each other than the 6 elderly social club projects.

How is the £4800 being spent roughly? Also I am being told that Ashok charity was funded to maintain some or all of these planters and i have just seen that they are applying for money again to continue that maintenance so how is that going to work if you are doing the same? I wish you the best because those planters especiallly the ones outside bereket and near the high school are in a sorry state but what will happen after the funding ends, even if you get a school or group to look after each one, how will you make them maintain them after the funding ends, are you going to keep badgering them for free forever? Why did the council even allow them if it wasn't going to maintain them, maybe they should be removed if they are going to need £5000 funding every year? Sorry that last bit wasnt aimed at you.
I really understand your frustration. Part of my task is to find out who's responsible for which planters and try and bring the whole maintenance thing together. I would need permission to do some of the things I'd like to do with them. It would be lovely if they reflected the community a bit more. I want to put something together that is sustainable and won't need regular funding. I will try my best if I get the funding. Thanks for your thoughts on this. Fiona

@Fiona Leckenby Thank you can I ask how you intend to spend the £4800 roughly?
Good morning Jay, apologies for the delay in replying. The financing will be spread over 12 months as follows : 12 hours of work per month at £25 per hour (this includes researching as well as physically tending to the planters with at least one group of residence/volunteers per month). £50 per month refreshments for volunteers. Plants £400. Publicity £100. Equipment hire and use of garden £100. Thanks for your question. Fiona
