Description
At Being The Cure, we believe in nurturing the next generation of society’s heroes through evidence-informed character education that instils humility, honesty, and kindness in every child and young person.
We run the Saturday School for Heroism, a free programme that provides moral and character development to children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in Newham. Many schools in the area lack the funding or expertise to deliver this kind of education, leaving it as a privilege for wealthier areas. Being the Cure exists to address this inequality.
The Saturday School is a meticulously designed educational initiative to instil a profound sense of heroism in children and young people which inspires them to strive for the welfare of others. Our sessions run for two hours every Saturday across 39 weeks, directly benefitting around 60 children each year per site. The programme empowers children to choose kindness and make positive life-changing decisions.
Twice a year, participants lead youth social action projects that benefit the wider community. For example, they prepared food for the homeless in Plaistow, transformed the home of an isolated elderly woman in East Ham, and recently partnered with blind adults to clear an 80-foot wall of overgrown bushes in a neglected council estate near the West Ham park.
Since 2021, we have supported over 700 children and young people through transformative sessions using storytelling, art, and play to teach values such as kindness, humility, and honesty. Together, we explore complex issues like bullying, racism, and inequality.
