Samba for everyone!

From "Stratford and West Ham Community Assemblies"

Go to the project

This music course will promote physical and mental health among all participants in Newham, through the most energetic and exciting rhythm on the planet: Samba!

Samba is the traditional music performed by percussions during carnivals and ceremonies in Brazil.

Its catchy, easy-to-play, and engaging rhythms helped this music to spread throughout the world.

The benefits for all the participants playing in a Samba session, no matter their age or previous music skills, include:

- Development of physical coordination and wider listening skills;

- Relieving of mental and body stress;

- Increased self-esteem, confidence, and creativity by actively playing along others and inventing original music materials;

The course will be led by Fabio Picarelli, a Secondary music teacher in Newham who has also been working with primary schools' students in the area. A few years ago, Mr Picarelli felt in love with Samba and he is now trying to share the joy of this music with his community.

            FOR WHOM, AND WHEN?

Everyone is welcome, there is no age limit. However, primary school kids are encouraged to take part along with their parents. No previous music skills are required.

The Samba course is organized in 1-hour sessions, taking place weekly every Saturday afternoon on school term time.

The maximum number of participants, actively playing percussions in each session is 12.

According to the number of people interested in joining the course 2 different classes could be ran on Saturday afternoon consecutively (i.e., class 1: Children with parents; class 2: Adults /elderly people).

!![Covid19] Important: Samba sessions allow musicians to maintain social distancing and playing safely by using percussions individually.

OBJECTIVES:

During each session, all participants are involved in body percussion warm-ups and learn about a range of drums and percussions used in a Samba bateria. Through call and response and repetitions of the most common rhythms, all participants will gradually learn how to create and develop their own Samba patterns.

The main target of the course is to build up and enhance rhythmic and wider music skills in all the participants to create an original Samba performance for the community in Newham.
