Safer Pavements, Greener Pavements
From "Forest Gate & Maryland Community Assemblies 2022"
Go to the project

Proposal to install planters on to pavements that we know are often used by cars for idling or parking on - which limit ease of use by buggies, wheelchair users and generally all pedestrians - causing damage to the pavements and adding more pollution. The planets will encourage biodiversity by the range of flowers and plants in them, and giving a greener and brighter look to the neighbourhood. We can also team up with local schools/youthclub to have young people decorate them, engaging them into taking care of the local area and we can organise monthly meet-ups for locals to tidy the planters, so bringing the community together.

@Chris Rodger hi Chris. Thanks for your comment. Would be great to work with you on covering the section you mentioned. The only thing that would need looking into is the market as I believe that vendors might need access during market days. I will look into this. If not perhaps we can work with the market organisers to ensure proper use of the space? Something for us to think about. Hope that helps and please do let me know your thoughts

Is there any thoughts on where the planters would go.. can we get some on romford road on the parade of shops before the junction with upton lane. we always have cars on pavements pretty much all day, especially in the afternoons.

@Wasim Jaweed hi Wasim, thanks for your feedback. Absolutely! This was one of the identified hotspots. If you have an exact location please let us know but we where definitely looking at this location. I’m trying to get a map up on here. The current hotspots are on the corner of Romford road and Upton lane. On woodgrange road opposite the gate library and two more further down Romford road close to the Hovis entrance. These are all subject to RAM risk assessment and utility tracing. Hope that helps and please do vote for this project if you feel it will be beneficial.

@Wasim Jaweed hi Wasim, you are definitely right about those locations and those have been highlighted as places to potentially install planters, but it’s great to hear that you support those areas also. If you are local would be great to have your feedback on the decorations and upkeep, if you are interested and should the project get the go ahead, of course.

The pavementsshould be repaired before installing anything
There are severe cracks in pavements significant risk of falls we have had a number of incidents
Also low level planters round tree trunkss are a trip hazard especially because street lights often not working in other words do the basics first please

@Janice Holloway hi Janice. You should be reporting any issues with pavements to newham council directly. This project isn’t to repair pavements - that is council duty.

I’d love greening and benches to be included as we have so little places for people to sit and enjoy the outside. I think the planters outside the Stratford shopping centre near broadway are a really good example of this.

@Lexi Elven thanks so much for your positive feedback. Seating style planters is definitely something we can develop. I love the idea that these anti polluters can be enjoyed by so many

As a local resident I would support this idea. Alas it would not solve cyclist and electric scooter users zooming up and down Forest gate on pavements, if there was a way to incorporate a deterrent for that in your plans it would be great. Further more there are wasted spaces around the Brough that encourage loiters/drug dealers and putting planters along the roads in these hotspot will stop curb crawlers and drug dealers in cars parked on road corners waiting for their customers to do their business

@anonymous anon thanks for your support on this. Do agree that greener spaces discourage improper use

We put 6 planters in Upton Lane last year for the first round of Community Assembly funding. Happy to share our experiences.

for me, this brings about a collective of resolves. We are all sick of cars parking however they like on the pavements. These planters will prevent this from happening, but also adding greenery in the borough, which is much needed, helps wildlife and biodiversity and engages the local community through working together.

From Ashoks Vision Youth Nature and Bio Diversity Project: This is a great idea and we would love to collaborate with you on this project as we have a team of youth volunteers who are ready to help install planters and help maintain. This project will connect the community and make Newham streets look pleasant. Good luck!
