Proposed budget

GBP 10,000

Description

Young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Forest Gate have told us loud and clear: they need a safe, inclusive space where they can belong.

Too many SEND young people in Newham face bullying, harassment, and exclusion. After COVID and the closure of NEON and Newham College programmes, opportunities have disappeared. Parents and carers have shared with youth workers that their children are now left at home, feeling isolated and losing confidence. Attending courses and youth sessions used to be their chance to socialise, develop skills, and feel included — but now these opportunities are gone.

Safe Space, Strong Futures will change that.

This project will run two days a week at Forest Gate Youth Zone, creating a safe and welcoming environment tailored to SEND needs. It will provide:

  • Art therapy and creative sessions to support emotional wellbeing.
  • Physical activities to keep young people active and reduce stress.
  • Trips and outings to help build independence and life skills.
  • A sensory-friendly space, with the right equipment and trained staff.
  • Support from youth workers, CAMHS, and volunteers, ensuring sessions are safe, professional, and inclusive.

What makes this project powerful is that it is youth-led. I am a young person with Down syndrome, and I know first-hand how few opportunities exist for SEND young people once we leave school. With other SEND youth leaders, I will help shape the programme to make sure it meets our needs and gives us a voice.

The benefits will be life-changing:

  • Health and Wellbeing: reducing isolation, improving mental health, and building confidence.
  • Community Safety: giving vulnerable young people a safe alternative to being left out or targeted.
  • Public Spaces: making Forest Gate Youth Zone truly inclusive for all.

By voting for Safe Space, Strong Futures, you are voting for a fairer, healthier, and more inclusive Forest Gate. Together, we can make sure SEND young people are not left behind — but instead, have the same opportunities as everyone else to thrive, connect, and build strong futures.

Here are some testimonials of the needs for this project.

“Since my college programme stopped, I’ve just been at home. I want somewhere safe to go, to meet people like me and not feel left out.” – Young person with SEND

“I just want to do normal activities like art, trips, and sports, but in a place where I don’t feel judged.” – Young person, Forest Gate

“When the adult courses ended, my son lost his only way of meeting friends. He spends too much time isolated now. This project would give him back his independence.” – Parent of SEND young person

“Families like ours need this. We want to see our children happy, confident, and part of the community, not shut away at home.” – Carer from Forest Gate

Hello. I couldn’t get to the voting event yesterday so I’m asking the same questions what I’d ask in person as I want to know what I will actually get for my vote? Can see youve given some details but would still like a rough breakdown.

@Madison Hambrook Thank you for answering in all this detail, it really helps. I do have some follow up questions. Is Safe Space Strong Futures a charity or company or some other type of group? The project sounds very good for the local youths with SEND. 2 sessions a week for 12 months is a good ratio. Is that an academic 12 months (39 weeks) or a working 12 months (48 weeks) or a full 12 months (52 weeks)? Can you give a rough breakdown of figures? Not a line by line but rough totals for venue costs vs staff (includes practitioners/youth workers) costs vs outings costs vs sensory calming materials vs arts/activity materials vs overheads vs project management costs, so just 7 rough figures.

@Jay Smith Thank you again for your thoughtful engagement — we really appreciate the care you’re taking in understanding each project. To clarify your first question: Is Safe Space Strong Futures a charity or company? Safe Space Strong Futures is a community-led youth project, not a registered charity or company. It is coordinated through the Forest Gate youth centre, where a network of youth workers, practitioners and volunteers work together. Each project is led by a different young leader, with professional support where needed. The aim is to keep delivery local, youth-led, and directly responsive to the needs of the community, rather than running through a large external organisation. Session Schedule (SEND Project) The project runs 2 sessions per week across a full 12 months (approximately 48 weeks), allowing for short breaks in line with community centre closure periods and facilitator availability. This structure ensures consistency and long-term support, which is particularly important for young people with SEND who benefit from routine and relationship-based engagement. Rough Budget Breakdown (as requested — grouped into broad categories) Cost Area Approximate Total Youth Workers / Practitioners / SEND Specialists ~£12,000 Venue / Space Hire (Forest Gate community spaces) ~£3,500 Outings & Community Trips (accessible / sensory-friendly) ~£3,000 Sensory & Calming Resources (weighted items, lighting, seating, tactile tools) ~£1,500 Arts, Crafts & Activity Materials ~£1,500 Project Coordination / Management ~£2,000 General Overheads & Access Support (refreshments, transport help, inclusion support) ~£1,500 Total Estimated Budget: ~£24,500 (depending on final venue agreement and group size) We hope this gives a clear picture of how the funding is structured to provide consistent, high-quality and emotionally safe support for young people with SEND in Forest Gate. Or meet in-person to discuss how to keep this support as accessible and community-driven as possible. Thank you again for the thoughtful questions — your understanding and input really helps shape the programme in ways that benefit everyone in the community.

This project really speaks to the heart of what’s needed. Young people with SEND deserve a safe place where they can belong and grow. I love that this is youth led as their voices matter most. Safe Space, Strong Futures has the power to bring back confidence, connection and joy, and I really hope it gets the support it deserves.

This isn’t just about activities. It’s about dignity, safety, and giving SEND young people the chance to grow like everyone else

SEND young people told us directly they felt excluded from summer programmes due to lack of staff and sensory facilities. This project responds to exactly what they asked for.
